Hello,

I was running a pagespeed check on a new website a couple of days ago and got the following error:

"The referrer https://www.googleapis.com does not match the referrer restrictions configured on your API key. Please use the API Console to update your key restrictions."

We continue to get this error regardless of what site we run Insights on, whether it is a website we created and host or not. I have randomly tested with both NZ and US websites and have tried over several days with the same result.
Any ideas?

Hi Tracy,

I don't get it. Are you running the test with the Pagespeed Insights website or with the Pagespeed Insights API?

Best,
Carlos.

Hi Carlos,

I am having the same problem here when using Pagespeed Insights WEBSITE it says:

"The referrer https://developers.google.com/ does not match the referrer restrictions configured on your API key. Please use the API Console to update your key restrictions"

Tried fiddling with the API console with two different google accounts to no avail. Any ideas?
Thank you and anyone that can find a solution.

I've forgot to mention that I've been able to use the API Explorer to query websites. So the API works but the WEBSITE blocks any attempt.

OK, after some further research, it seems to be a browser-specific issue. I tried on another system and the website insights worked fine.
After installing and switching to Chrome on my system it also works. There may have been some kind of security setting affecting things.

Hi Tracy,
after reading your answer I've tried using another browser and I can confirm you that, on the contrary, I experience this issue on Chrome but it works ok on Safari. Wow?

This is usually caused by the browser. Same thing happened to me when I was using brave browser, I switched to Chrome and waaalaaa IT WORKED! :-)

just disable any adblocker on your browser, and for brave users just do the same disable brave shield

This https://gtmetrix.com give my site this

PageSpeed Score
(98%)
YSlow Score
(90%)

Mobile 77
Desktop 80

Something is badly wrong with those Google testers !!

For the "The referrer https://www.googleapis.com does not match the referrer restrictions configured on your API key. Please use the API Console to update your key restrictions."

Just look what

 Isaac Kiptoo  said down there

"just disable any adblocker on your browser, and for brave users just do the same disable brave shield" and you're OK
