I have a question for the PageSpeed Insights team,
I have the Chrome Extension for PageSpeed Insights, and I was disappointed to learn that the extension is no longer supported by Google or available in the Chrome Store. One of the things that I used the extension for was to test sites inside my firewall, so moving to the online version of PageSpeed insights doesn't help here. I also liked the fact that the tool was right in my browser so it was very quick to analyze a page. I appreciate that the team has limited time though and can't continue to support every option going forward.
However, I would like to know what the team would think of turning over the extension to the community to see if support can be picked up there. I have two proposals here.
First, I still have the extension on my PC. I could take what I have and package it up to be loaded back to the Chrome Store, but edit the extension and the listing in the Chrome Store to make it clear that the (new) extension is no longer supported by Google. I would also make clear that the results from the extension may not exactly agree with what you see online, but the extension would still give you good general guidance about your pages. In this way, the extension could live on, it just wouldn't be supported by Google any more. It may one day break, but at least while it works, people don't have to copy it from machine to machine and others can get the extension.
My second proposal would be to ask if the source code for the last version be turned over to the community to see if there is a group that wants to pick up support for it? I was looking at the source if Google code, but this seemed to be an older version. If someone in the community decides to pick up support for the extension, great. If not, then we know it wasn't that important to people.
If you have additional suggestions, I would welcome them. I think a number of us found the extension to be very useful for a variety of reasons, so it would be nice if we can find a way that the extension can carry in in some form. I would hope that the team would be open to one or both of the options that I presented above or can come up with some other acceptable alternative.
Thank you,
David Berry
