When I run the test the slowest image I see is 0.45 seconds.

Response time is going to vary from page load to page load and it's possible that the 3.6 second measurement was just a one time anomaly on your server.

I've read the FAQs and searched the help center.

I am after some advice with regards to the page speed insights.
Recently, this tool has been advising me to improve server response time because certain resources take too long to load.

Running this tool, it appears as though some tiny png files take the page speed tool 3.6 seconds to load!

Obviously I am now quite concerned!!!

I clear my browser cache, then try to load the png directly in the browser. Bang, as soon as i hit the enter key, the image is loaded within 90ms - significantly lower than the 3.6s which page speed says that it loaded in!!!

Is there a bug with Page Speed Insights? Is google having problems crawling my site? In terms of user experience, the homepage is only 500kb and loads fully within a second.

As such, I can only deduce that there is a fault with your online tool https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights

Do you have any advice or recommendations?

Bryan beat me to the punch, but to second what he said, I am seeing response times between 200 and 500ms in my browser. Those aren't terrible, considering that your main html is loading quickly, but its something that could likely use improvement. There's going to be some inherent fluctuation in your times most likely, but the hope is that those fluctuations will be closer to the 100ms mark.

There are tools that can help with these issues (caching servers, proxies, cdn's, etc) if you can't get these times lower.

Howdy, Ahmet. I am taking a look now and it seems like your response times are improving. Have you done something to change your server? For instance, here is the most recent result I did, (most of the urls are calls to tables.php):

That's a lot better than you were posting before. If you did change something, we'd love to hear details.

Hi all, thanks for advice so far...

Ok, using your link, I have pasted page speed recommendations below - I have coloured in red the parts which cause concern for me.

Now let's take the top one as an example. http://goldealers.co.uk/media/2013/03/Call-Us.png which apparently took 2.9s to load. Open up the firebug net tab / equivalent for chrome and check manually how long it takes to download... As you can see, the image is only 33.2kb and it loads in 112ms - not

Any ideas???

Suggestions for this page

Long web server response times delay page loading. Reduce your response times to make your page load faster.

That's why I am so confused!

Howdy, Ahmet.

I just ran your site through another tool that prints out the waterfall of the request:

You can click on each bar to see its individual timing up close. You'll see timings that are similar to what is being reported by PageSpeed: between .15 seconds and .4 seconds.

If you're having a large degree of variability in your response time, it opens up a few questions:

1) Are you on a dedicated server or is this a shared host?
If there are other websites sharing your hardware, your sites speed may fluctuate as it competes with them. Check with your hosting provider if you are unsure.

2) If it is dedicated, is the server under provisioned for the amount of traffic that you get (i.e. is it too slow or does it not have enough ram).
This is similar to the first question, with the idea being that, even if it is dedicated, normal fluctuations in your traffic may slow down your server.

3) Are there other things running on the server other than the website?
Again, even if it is a dedicated server and you have a small amount of web traffic, if the server is used for other services (databases, emails, etc), that may slow it down.

These are the first of many questions you want to answer. Performance optimization is large subject area, with this rule being the proverbial "tip of the iceburg".
