ModPagespeedDistributedRewriteServers option?

What is ModPagespeedDistributedRewriteServers option for rewriter? I don't see anything that would describe how this works... Is it just a placeholder for some future development?

Distributed rewriting was something we built as an experiment, but
never got it to where it was usable or useful. It's still in the
code, but it's not something that can be just turned on at this point.
