Data recovery can take a while, although I've never seen a hard drive have to take that long to be read from and repair. What kind of state is the drive in, is it making noises, does it report bad sectors, what happened to it to make the NTFS table corrupt?
If you format the drive data recovery won't be faster. If you are sure that the original problem is with a corrupted NTFS table you could try using some kind of partition recovery software. However the best option is such cases it to use the services of a data recovery company. Data recovery is not an easy process and if you aren't a 100% sure what and why you are doing you might end up losing your data.
The file size is in the initial header, so when the recovery software finds traces of old files, you're going to have more data than what's actually possible to fit on the disk due to the header and leftover bits from old deleted data.
You will find that several files will be either duplicates or fully corrupted and the wrong file size. Look through the recovery and try to identify the problem files/folders. It's a bi-product of the corrupted file system trying to spit out any file that could potentially been proper on the drive. You do have good files though, right?
A fun next step is to run another recovery app on the same data set to find out their results. It's best to have a few apps in your arsenal instead of one as the recovered data set can be drastically different from one to the next.
GetDataBack, R-Studio are both good if you are willing to spend a little money. Since you won't do a lot of recovery, use the ones that have worked for you in the past and if the data isn't there or you think there should be a better recovery, try a free version of another and then another. You will build your own suite of tools starting with what works for you.
