Hi Austin\JM,

Sorry I didn’t reply earlier, been pretty busy. We got hammered with snow today so things are quite around here.

I use Viewreader to go from DxDesigner to either Orcad or Logic.

Process:

Schematic is designed in DxDesigner (Older version). I use Viewreader 9.1 to convert to Orcad. I then use Mentor Translator to convert to Logic (Orcad to Logic). Works great.

Of course there is some clean-up. Mostly moving text\attributes. All attributes from DxDesigner are brought to logic which is nice. It does have a problem with the “Signal” attribute but shows up as an error in the log file so you can quickly locate and fix symbol. The best results I get is when I archive the project first then run Viewreader. I use it straight out of the box and am very happy with it. There are mapping files for attributes and I bet if I played with the text orientation in DxDesigner I could get the text problem fixed. I don’t use it a lot so I usually do the clean-up. I do not have Orcad so I cannot comment on how it looks in Orcad. My customer who I send the Orcad files to is very happy with the translated files. It also translates libraries.

Hi John,

Looks like a full loop then. We can translate anything between OrCAD, ViewDraw/DxD and Logic. That's good.

I was impressed by how clean the Logic schematics came into DxD. I have not tried any other translations, but I will setup a test to check them all out. I really only care about DxD <=> OrCAD, but if I have to use Logic as an intermediary, that's fine.

I don't understand why Mentor doesn't simply give us a Dx --> Logic
converter. It's rather stupid that they don't have one available.

Obviously, per John R, it's do-able right now if you have OrCad and if
you want to jump through the hoops it takes.

I made a submission some time back to the ideas site for some
additional converters, a Dx to Logic converter is one of them. It is

With the "PADS Translators" (start menu selection) installed with DxDesigner
2004SP2 I can convert:

PowerLogic to DxD
OrCAD Capture to DxD

It appears that "viewreader" (as reported by others) allows me to convert
DxD to OrCAD (I don't know if it allows Logic to OrCAD). So, this gives me
a bidirectional path between DxD and OrCAD it appears.

I don't know what the program is for DxD to Logic, or OrCAD to Logic.
Perhaps that's in the downloadable "Mentor Translators".

I found I have pads_convert.zip. It's dated 2005, so it's probably what I
am looking for. No idea what the difference is between it and 40. The one
I found's readme claims it does the following:

Layout Translator:
Input - P-CAD or Protel
Output - PADS

Schematic Translator:
Input - OrCAD, Protel, or PADS Logic
Output - PADS Logic or DxDesigner

So, with these, I should be able to go between any of the three I have
(OrCAD, Logic and DxD).

OrCAD => DxD - pads_convert (or translator installed with DxD 2004SP2)
DxD => OrCAD - viewreader

Logic => DxD = pads_convert (or translator installed with DxD 2004SP2)
DxD => Logic = 2 steps - DxD => OrCAD using viewreader,
then OrCAD => Logic using pads_convert

OrCAD => Logic - pads_convert
Logic => OrCAD - 2 steps - Logic => DxD using pads_convert (or translator
installed with DxD 2004SP2)
then DxD => OrCAD - viewreader

Now, the trick is, how good are these translations. Logic => DxD is all
I've tried, and using the translator installed with DxD 2004SP2, it looked
really good.

Someone emailed me that Logic an import OrCAD directly, but I can't see how
to do that in my version of Logic, or perhaps if I install pads_convert,
that shows up as an option in Logic file/open.

Logic will open an OrCAD schematic directly, no converter needed,
though there is one.

Stupidly, Mentor has no conversion from Dx to Logic (which is the whole
point of this string, I thought...).

Open Logic, then File - Open

In the drop-down is a choice for OrCAD schematic (.dsn) file

I imagine if you RMB'ed a .dsn file and told it to open with Logic,
that would also work.

v2007.2 and v2007.4. right now, but I know that v2005.sp3 will also do

Another thing I forgot to add about the Mentor (Orcad to Logic) translator. 2005 sp1 will NOT read in the translated file. I use 2007.2 then export out to 2005 if needed.

The Open OrCAD feature is in 2005sp2. <File><Open> set file type to

Are you talking about a translated file from your pads_convert.zip, or have you also tried pads_convert.zip, which is an older version, and is dated 2005?

Guess I'll have to try all those combinations I outlined then and see what works/doesn't work.

Yes, the Mentor ver4.0 converter. I have not tried the older version. Ver 4.0 is dated 2007.
