As you are aware, tobacco use is a serious hazard to the health and well-being of children, youth, women and citizens in general. In a country like India, with diverse socio cultural milieu and varied socio economic background, effective communication of the hazards of tobacco use is a must.
One of the most effective way to spread awareness of the hazards of tobacco use are large and effective pictorial health warnings on tobacco product packages. We appreciate the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India for notifying 85% pictorial health warnings to be displayed on both sides of tobacco product packages from April 1, 2016. This is indeed a laudable move by the Ministry and we wholeheartedly support the timely and undiluted implementation of 85% PHWs from April 1, 2016.
However, the tobacco industry has made every effort to thwart this important public health measure and pressurise the Government to delay and dilute the 85% pictorial warnings.
We are also happy to note that the Indian Medical Association (IMA) is leading the Doctors For Tobacco Control in India Forum, which is mobilising support from medical and non-medical stakeholders to support 85% pictorial warnings. We, the Padma Awardees Doctors Forum would like to record our complete support to their efforts.
