Dragon Ball Super Card Game, not to be confused with the other Dragon Ball card game, Dragon Ball Heroes, looks like it's going to follow in the footsteps of other tabletop games like Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon by getting its own digital version at some point in 2023. Hopefully, it goes a little bit better than Pokemon's attempt.
The trailer showed by showing shots of various cards and packs for Dragon Ball Super Card Game, before showing a ton of different cards floating around. We then focus on Goku's card, before showing his character model fly towards the screen, revealing that the announcement is for a digital version of the game.
Leader cards are equipped with skills on the front and back of the card, whatever side is face-up are the usable ones. When Leader cards take enough damage, they are "Awakened", which allows the player to flip the card over, giving them access to the other skills.
Batte cards are crucial to the game, besides the Leader, these are the only other cards that can do battle. Each Battle card has an Energy and Combo cost, a power level, and some even come with additional skills that can be activated to strengthen the cards.
The playing field is divided into three areas, the Battle area, the ComboaArea, and the Energy Area. These are where the players will put their respective cards during play. Battle cards and Extra cards are placed in the Battle area and are kept here. These Cards are considered in play. When performing a combo, cards from the player's hand and/or Battle Area may be used.
These cards are put into the Combo area in Rest mode. The Energy area is designated for any cards being used as energy. Cards have both an Energyc and Combo cost. Energy is used to fulfill both of these to play, combo, or activate skills.
During the Main phase, players have the option of choosing one of their cards to do battle with the opponent. By placing the card in rest mode, then choosing a target( either the opponent's leader card or one of their battle cards) an attack can be initiated. This is considered the damage step. Players can also choose to Awaken their Leader card, activate any skills they may have, as well as combo cards to increase their battle power.
In response, the opponent has the chance to defend these actions. During the Defense step, players have the same option to Awaken, activate skills, or combo cards to defend any actions taken against them during the Battle step. Finally, the players enter the Damage step. Each player's power is calculated, and the card with the highest power wins the battle. In the case of a tie, the victory goes to the attacker.
When cards are used they are moved from their normal position (known as Active mode) into a sideways position known as Rest mode. This allows all players to know which cards have already been used during each turn.
Afterward, the player draws a card from their deck and adds it to the hand. Next, players can place a card from the hand into the charge area to use as Energy (face up and upside down). Any card can be used to do this. This completes the Charge phase.
Next is the Main phase. This is where the bulk of the gameplay is performed. During this phase, players are allowed to place battle cards into the Battle Area, activate cards skills or leadership skills, and lastly, engage in battles with the opponent.
Then, both players begin by drawing six cards, which will be used as the hand. The next thing to do is to inspect the draw to ensure the hand is good enough to use, and if it isn't the players may redraw their hands.
Players repeat the three phases of gameplay until a winner is determined. Each player has 8 Life Points (the 8 cards set aside at the beginning of the game). When a Battle is performed, the losing player in that exchange draws one of those 8 cards and adds it to their hand.
Cards drawn this way may be used just like any other card drawn from the deck. This adds another foil to the game, even though the player is losing life, they are also gaining access to potentially powerful cards. Caution must be used because if your life points reach zero the game is over and your opponent wins.
