Thank you for the excellent inside info! I agree doing one genre is not a good business model. Ive just been invited by a big library for custom cues. The first one (for a trailer) I spent 12-15 hours and was rejected, but a few days later they sent me another. Maybe they liked my style but not right for the brief? I did have fun and agree we do it for the love of composing not the money!

So, how did this story end? With a nice retired couple hitching our trailer to their truck and me pathetically begging them in our driveway to contact us first if they ever think of selling. #dibsLong may you run little Shasta.

Love this!! I just bought one today and pick it up this weekend. She is already fully restored and ready to hit the road and we are super excited. We live in Riverside close to where you got your beauty but we are picking ours up in Northern California so it may be an interesting trip home. Love the blog!

I enjoyed so much your story, thank you fir it. It was believe it or not a nice start to our own vintage camper ownership as we just bought our first one a 1959 Avion R23 and even though is in great shape we are changing some things here and there to making it more cute and beautiful than it is already. God bless you!!

Hey I'm Jenny, a weirdo who loves old furniture and old houses. This blog is where I share house projects and other design related ramblings as we fix up our 1960's ranch home in SLO, California!

I kept it up for a few years because I liked my teacher. He was really nice, really enthusiastic, and I did like the music we played. (At this point my music collection was mostly Janet Jackson and Simply Red so you can make your own judgments there).

That passion for the guitar and writing music was fuelled by Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins and by me and my friends being in a band together playing covers of Nirvana, the Foo Fighters, and a small band called the Llama Farmers, and we absolutely loved it.

So I signed up to study music and art at Degree level. I had an amazing tutor called Connall Gleeson which was a bit of a fanboy moment for me as he had done some orchestration on Star Trek: The Next Generation. He had worked in the States as an orchestrator and was an amazing composer and totally inspired me.

The course was wonderfully diverse. It taught you everything from using max MSP and logic to writing music for installations and dance. As it was an art and music course we studied all these composers, artists, and choreographers. It was fantastic. It was the thing that laid the foundations for me of actually composing music.

The composers we listened to and studied, like the music concrete movement where they began recording sounds and playing them out live and highlighting the crazy sounds that we are surrounded by every day. This exposure to experimentation was amazing and as a result I started to focus on writing music whilst I was on this course and I realised actually I want to be a film composer. I wanted to write music for things like Danny Elfman, like John Williams, like John Barry and I just completely immerse myself in film scores.

In the evenings whilst my girlfriend was doing English literature reading, I would sit there with my headphones listening to and reading the scores of Debussy, Mozart and Beethoven. I taught myself a great deal about writing by studying scores and I had this little workbook where I had sections on orchestration, notation, composition, theory and harmony.

I had my first experience in sampling with cakewalk pro. I invited my friend Hannah to play some violin notes for me. The resulting samples I used to create my own harmonies and beds in my music. It was just wonderful. I loved that ability to capture live recordings all from the comfort of my own home.

At the time of my life it was all play. I had this passion in my mind that I was going to be a film composer. I started playing around with idea of growing my skillset and exploring as much as I could.

The great thing was that I was learning my craft, pitching, getting feedback, pitching, getting feedback, all the while increasing the amount of sample libraries I had, increasing the speed of my working. I even got a MIDI keyboard. It was very exciting.

Vik went on to set up the company Elephant Music, which I signed to, my actual big break. Whilst I was teaching part time, I was sending tracks to Vik and Vik was starting to get me work that was paid. Huge!

Our daughter Imogen was just born and I realized that I wanted to be around when my daughter was little, so I decided to hand in my notice at the school I was working in. And this is the wonderful thing about the universe it gave me something.

For a few years I was working with several companies, writing library music, corporate music, trailer music and ad music. Through a book by Tim Ferriss I was introduced to the 80/20 principle; what 20% of your work gives you 80% of your money. For me the answer was obvious Elephant Music was giving me about 90% of my income and it was only 20% of my working time.

The course taught people all the ins and outs of trailer musi. From Braaams to Rises, Structure and build, to mixing and mastering. For this last part I was very, very lucky to have Toby Mason agree to do a mixing and mastering masterclass at the end of that course.

This trailer has been a long time coming, but I hope when you see it, you will understand why. It was made by my older son and husband, almost entirely in my small town, and against a green screen built in the garage of my home. The actors are my daughter, son-in-law, and other friends and neighbors.

this book has become put of me because I am part Jewish. so to learn about what some of my religion want through was hard the first time I read the book. then I read it 3 more times and it gets clearer with what they went through. And thank you so much for not making the Jewish culture sound inhuman

To me the fact that you got that much detail into this book is awesome. when I got it at the book fair I thought it was not going to be a good book but then I got home and when I started to read it I did not want to put it down.

Hello Composers, Mike here!
I am, like many of you composers in here, interested in getting into the Trailer Music niche as a composer. Why? The money is amazing if you can get placements.

I did some research to find what Trailer Music Labels and Music Libraries are out there, and came up with this list. But I would love to get more tips on music libraries specialising in trailer music from you.

I think that @Geoffers suggestion with smaller labels is good, as you are able to grow and learn. But I think as well, if you feel like that one of your tracks might be something special indeed, then I would try to put into a bigger known library, as they will help you to make it even more special for sure.

I worked on my last solo album for 8-9 months (off and on) and that time allows me to experiment properly and develop so I enjoy the process. I think if I was given a very tight deadline like you have been given the process would be significantly less enjoyable.

Customs are a different story and here you will often come across very tight deadlines, sometimes just a few hours to produce a track, with potentially lots of revisions down the line. The pay off is in the fee.

Jan and David, Thanks for taking the time to post all of this interesting data. We are looking at getting a Lance in about 9 to 18 months. We are thinking of an 1985 to get the walk-around bed. Are there any blogs you know of on larger Lance trailers? Thanks and hope to run into camping in the near future.

Any mechanical device will fail sooner if pushed to its rated limits.
If you trade in your vehicles regularly no problem.
If you want your tow vehicle to last 10 years get one rated 20-30 percent over your usage.
We love our Lance.
Tow a 2180 with a Ram 1500 and it handles well no anti-sway or levelers needed.
Mileage is dismal at 10-12 however.

High altitude must be considered when calculating inverter output. An inverter looser 3.2% power for every 1000 feet above sea level. Some inverter brands sell high altitude carburetor jets for high altitude usage like in Colorado etc.

I have a 2015 Toyota Tacoma and am planning on purchasing a Lance 1685. What type of brake controller system (if any) did you have with your 4runner? It sounds like your Tundra came with a brake control system already installed. Thanks, Sandi

I am glad to hear that you have driven many miles with a Toyota Tacoma and Lance 1685. I am in the same situation (2004 V6 with trans cooler). We have not made a challenging trip yet. But it is coming up (Los Angeles to Kern and then Mammoth Lakes). My question is how exactly did you drive the truck? Did you stay in D or did you shift down sometimes and just go slower. I also know to turn off the overdrive. Thanks for what help you can give me.

Hi Jan,
My wife and I are looking to get into rving as we are now empty nesters. Do you know of anyone with a 1475? We have a 2016 4Runner with tow package so not worried about towing weight, Anyone we could find to ask about a 1475 would be great. Thanks.

I was so happy to find this post. I am looking to buy a 1685. I was planning on pulling it with my 4Runner. I posted questions on a few forums about this combo (4Runner and 1685) and got some pretty rude replies about how this was a horrible combination. I am pleasantly surprised to read your blog and look forward to purchasing my new trailer. Thank you!

Thank you SO Much for the information on the weight differences on the Lance 1685. I feel now I can go ahead and eliminate the smaller 1575 in favor of the 1685 with more storage and dual axles. Will likely go with the older style to save the extra 400 lbs , but I now know where the weight difference comes from. Again, Thank you for the info!

Hi folks, I checked with lance factory, the new 2018 have an enhanced chassis which, according to lance is significantly stronger than previous years. They have also added side windows to the slider. I suspect that most of the increase in weight (500 lbs) is invested in the upgraded chassis.
