On Sunday a bunch of us hiked to the old warden’s cabin at Three Mile Lake, near the Stanfield Halifax International Airport, over four safely frozen lakes. Incredibly, we met four other parties; camping, staying at the cabin, skating, or dog walking; on the way.
The supply of firewood inside the cabin is seriously depleted (see photo) and someone has been foolishly cutting live trees for firewood. Not good. There are plans afoot to realign portions of the portage between Preeper Big Lake and North Red Trout Lake in order to avoid the permanently wet knee-deep spots on the carry.

Hello Dusan
It's possible the live cut wood is from the trees that were cut down for the Helicopter landing point. I had used some of that wood to make the saw horse and I spoke to a chap that had cut some of it up for firewood. But I also saw live cut stumps up behind the toilet.
Here's a picture of the wood supply, how I found it on Nov 30, and then how I left it on Dec 2, 2021. We need to somehow instil this practice in others.
I have been thinking about a "Code of ethics", Good Camping Practice", "Camp Etiquette"
or something like that, posted in the cabin. Sanctioned by possible: DNR (or what ever they are called now), CKNS or even "The Four Jacks''
On the list could be things like:
Clean up as you leave, or leave cleaner than you found.
Restock wood supply. Don't cut live trees.
TAKE OUT OR PACK OUT all garbage!
Respect the cabin.
(Or even don't leave booze or controled susbstances as we can't control the age of visitors. This may be considered by some going a little too far.)

See thoughts on wording of such a posting in the outhouse near the parking lot for the hiking trails on the old poor farm lands (Cole Harbour Heritage Park) off Bissett Road, Cole Harbour.  Very well worded.  Best I’m seen on telling folk how to do what’s right.  Possibly look up the author of the signs for guidance on signs for the warden’s cabin…Eric

I think I would like to know Bernie’s schedule for when he will visit the cabin, and then plan my visit to be there after him, arriving at a cleaned , wood stocked cabin.

Thank you all for the work you do!

John

As a less frequent vistor some guidance on finding some dry wood to harvest would be helpful. Perhaps a map or flagging tape to some trees felled the year prior.. Many may not mind helping with the labour of sawing and splitting but do not have any good outlets for our energy.
