Recently I have been doing a little research on the old game wardens and their camps in the original four provincial game sanctuaries. They had many duties, including maintenance of the sanctuaries’ boundaries, assistance to “tourists and travellers,” cutting out of portages and “cleaning the rivers” for canoeing.

According to the 1930 annual report of the Department of Lands and Forests there were eight warden’s camps in the Tobeatic, seven in the Liscomb, and three in Waverley. I have pretty complete lists of the names/locations of the camps in the latter two, plus Camp 1 in Chignecto, but only a few of the Tobeatic camps: Pollard’s, DeMolitor’s, and Skudiac (various spellings). Plus Cofan Cabin. Can anyone enlighten me about the names of the other four camps?

P.S. The attached photo of an unidentified warden’s camp is also from the 1930 report. The flat, open site, with much ground vegetation, looks very much like the present Long Lake camp (Liscomb Game Sanctuary and Boggy Lake Wilderness Area). But the windows are all wrong...

Hi Dusan,

Have you contacted Bud Inglis the author of Backwoods Cabins of Nova Scotia? He might know of the names?

Thanks for the interesting post.

Hi Dusan,

I just learned about these cabins and I'm fascinated with the history and current state of the remaining camps.

So far I know of and have locations for the one in the Tobiatic, Three Mile Lake, and Boggy Lake WA. Are these the only cabins left?

I'm pleased to see that three above have recently been worked on by volunteers.
I can't wait to visit them.

Cheers
Charles
