Two canoeists and three sea kayakers came out on
today's official CKNS trip down the rain-swollen Musquodoboit River. It was
very, very high and Jam Falls and Blue Falls in Musquodoboit Harbour were pretty
well washed out. But we paddled the very slow-moving stretch further upstream,
between the bridge by the Elderbank highway sign and the bridge at Meaghers
Grant.
Trip leader David Ripley started the outing
off with an elegant seal launch, and we were off. Our progress was rudely
interrupted by a heavy shower, which necessitated us to seek shelter under
some dense branches of an old riverside
hemlock. Our next break from paddling was a bushwhack
up Dollar Lake Brook to check the scenic gorge, which was filled with
rushing water, and the ruins of the old grist mill. Very, very scenic.
Another heavy shower caught us while we were
already ashore for our lunch break. Again, heavy riverside foliage helped us
survive the downpour.
All in all, we spent some four hours on the
flooding and truly mighty Musquodoboit River. many thanks to David Ripley for
organizing a fine river trip.
