I am working on a film which may be needing  a section of whitewater river with some ability to have control or predictability

I remember years ago, like maybe 20 years ago, we had a whitewater meet somewhere down the eastern shore.  It was a section that was dam controlled and they were able to open the dam for us.   Doesn anyone recall that, and which river it was?   I am thinking musquodoboit but not sure

I don’t remember the event, but it sounds like a section of the East River, Sheet Harbour.

Hello Christopher,

Allan is correct, it was the one and only East River Whitewater Festival on the East River Sheet Harbour, held mostly below the Marshall Falls dam, on June 1 - 3, 2001. Things have changed greatly since then. Nova Scotia Power has been privatized, with a different corporate culture.

And the Marshall Falls dam is now controlled remotely, so that you can no longer chat with the guy at the dam and make an arrangement for a few buckets of water. They  own and operate almost all of the active hydro dams in the province. I don't have any contacts there any more, but it is worth trying.

Minas Basin Pulp & Paper also operates hydro dams in the province..

It was the east river, sheet harbour. The dam is a couple of km upstream from the village. There is another spot just north of the dam called 12 mile stream I think, with a nice little drop.

Don’t they do dam releases to drain Gaspereau and Black River Lakes for the winter?  It seems to me that they drop both by about a foot in early fall.
