The year 2019 is well behind us, and so is paddling every month of the year, outdoors and in Nova Scotia, in order to achieve the Nova Scotia Four Seasons Paddling Award for the year. If you are eligible, then why not post your selected twelve monthly paddles here, with a cc to the Canoe Kayak Nova Scotia administrator at camailto:can...@sportnovascotia.ca ?

Hello fellow paddlers, here are my selected twelve monthly paddles (all done in a canoe):

January 26: Paddled from Terrence Bay to Prospect and back again via the secret tidal passages of the Rogues Roost Wilderness Area (I definitely recommend this fun and protected route!)

February 24: Exploring Musquodoboit Harbour and it's many islands.

March 30: Ice breaking on the Scotts River up to Powers Lake near Blind Bay

April 13 - 14: Paddled the Margaree River from Lake Ainslie (which was still completely frozen) to the Sea.

May 8 - 9: Paddled through the Medway Lakes Wilderness Area and stayed a night at the Rocky Lake Cabin

June 29: Canoed up the Scotts River to Powers Lake and to a nearby lookoff.  I had been held up in Labrador with work for several weeks and was certain I wouldn't be back in time to get a Nova Scotia paddle in during the month of June, but I got back just in the nick of time!

July 29 - 31: Spent three days with Nova Scotia Environment in the Medway Lakes Wilderness Area improving portages and campsites.

August 17 - 18: Paddled a beautiful loop in the White Lake Wilderness Area via Scrabble and Spider Lake.  Our catchphrase for this trip was: "2 days, 23 portages, 10 sandwiches, 1 fire-cooked chocolate cake".  I highly recommend this route; the portages are many, but relatively short, and every new lake feels like it's own remote world.

September 2: 'Terence Bay loop' via Quarry lake and Whale Cove Lake.  Part freshwater, part saltwater.  A great afternoon trip.

October 12 - 14: Cooked up some incredible thanksgiving meals while explored the Waverley Wilderness Area in the rain.

November 2 - 4: Canoed to Cape LaHave Island as part of a hunting trip (no success).

December 7 -8: Canoed across the Mersey River at Lewis Dump to access the Medway Lakes wilderness area as Jonathan Riley has described.

I love hearing about where everyone else paddles (especially for the challenging months of January and February).  Keep the lists coming!

All the best,

Tristan Glen

Congratulations are due to Oliver, probably the only canoe commuter in Halifax. An estimated 200 return trips by canoe across the Northwest Arm! And more!
