Today my partner and I hiked to the cabin, located within the
Waverley-Salmon River Long Lake Wilderness Area, from the end of AeroTech Drive.
The weather and the snow and ice conditions were perfect, so we made it in in
only two hours. There was no need for snowshoes, but ice creepers were useful as
there was only maybe 2 cm on the slippery lake ice.
Two separate parties (four adults and two adults plus a dog) stayed at the
cabin Saturday night, and we met one of them on their way out. On our way out on
Sunday afternoon we met another party, this time two dads and their sons, on the
way in. The day is approaching when the cabin will need some sort of a booking
system.
We found the cabin in immaculate order. The tool collection has grown since
my previous visit, and we couldn’t think of any deficiencies. But perhaps the
short trail to the thunderbox could be marked better, as apparently some
visitors couldn’t find it. Also, the thunderbox could be advertised better. No
one likes yellow snow around the cabin... or worse!
