Communication - Remote Areas

Hello paddle group,

Later this summer my son and I will be canoeing in the Temagami area of Northern Ontario and some areas are remote without any cell service. My wife has tasked me with researching what to use as a safety communication device. 

What do people use for equipment in areas without any cell service? Inreach or sat phone?

Does anyone locally rent this equipment?
