What to expect at NACURH!

What is NRHH Corporate Boardroom?

At the NACURH 2016 conference at the University of Delaware, the NRHH Representatives of each affiliated institution across NACURH will attend this boardroom to discuss and vote on NRHH matters. The boardroom will be led by the NAN (NACURH Associate for NRHH) and the regional ADNRHH’s will be available to answer questions and offer support.

When will NRHH Corporate Boardroom take place?

The NRHH Corporate Boardroom is currently scheduled to take place on Sunday morning. NRHH Representatives will not be able to attend the NACURH Corporate Boardroom because they will take place at the same time.

What should NRHH Reps expect to discuss/vote on in this boardroom?

The NNB (National NRHH Board) will be presenting the formal Strategic Plan for Representatives to discuss, amend, and vote to put into place. This plan will include the assessment steps and areas of improvement over the next three years, in order to move the honorary forward. There will also be a piece of legislation to include the newly revised on-campus live on requirement for inductees (one academic term) in the NRHH ByLaws. Additional pieces may arise closer to the conference. The Strategic Plan and legislation pieces will be published prior to the conference.

How can NRHH Reps prepare for this session?

Keep an eye out for published legislation and the Strategic Plan. Transition the incoming NRHH Representative who will be in attendance at the conference to understand where NRHH is and the direction your chapter would like to see the organization go in the future. Attend regional/NRHH monthly chats for additional updates.

About OTMs

OTMs (Of the Months) are an important tool you can use to provide recognition and appreciation on your campus! For those of you who are unaware, OTMs are short pieces of writing that people are encouraged to create. If you’re thinking about writing an OTM, check out the website at this link: http://otms.nrhh.org/

There are two types of OTMs you can write: General (which are about people, communities, or organizations you feel should be acknowledged) and Program (which are about  specific events or programs you want to recognize). When it comes to writing OTMs, there are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Focus on what they’ve done in the month! OTMs (as their name states) are meant to recognize people for what they’ve done in a specific month, so try to keep it limited to

  • Don’t be afraid to be descriptive! OTMs are meant to be 400600 words long, so instead of just saying something like, “this person worked hard,” do your best to give examples of how and when they worked hard.

  • Read some of the regional and NACURH winning OTMs! Seeing how some of these incredible OTMs are written can be very helpful in improving your own writing

  • Proofread your own writing! Often times, little spelling errors or grammatical mistakes can slip by you when you first write an OTM. Making sure that your writing is free of errors is a great first step towards having your OTMs win at the regional level.

  • Make sure you’re writing in the correct category! Check over the descriptions of the various categories you can write for to make sure you’re not accidentally writing an OTM in the wrong one.

When it comes to the two different types of OTMs, you have a lot of options on who and what to write about. For example, with General OTMs, you can choose to write about first year  students, resident assistants, staff advisors, and many others. For Program OTMs, you can write about educational programs, social programs, and more!

For the full lists of all the categories you can write for, check out these two links:

Transitioning New Executive Board Members

It’s that time of year where new executive board members are being elected and it is super exciting, but it can also be stressful if you don’t have a plan for transitioning the new executive board. Though our executive board structures may vary from chapter-to-chapter, there are still a few steps we can all take to ensure a smooth transition.

Read through your constitutional duties

Since you have served in your position for at least the past year, you probably know your role better than anyone in the chapter. Still, referring to your constitution can be helpful to recognize what duties you have not been able to complete in your time in office or can help you figure out what extensive topics you will need to talk about with the new member you are transitioning (for example: if you vote on your campus’ OTMs as part of the constitution, you may have a full transitioning meeting about what makes a good OTM).

Reflect on Your Year

Break up the year into each academic term; what big events did you plan, what committees were you chairing, where you preparing for any conferences? Reflecting on your past year in your position can help you better prepare your elected e-board member for upcoming commitments.

Your Campus, PACURH, and NACURH

Different e-board members have different roles when it comes to campus, regional, and the NACURH level. Understanding how your particular role connects to each of these can be helpful so you can make sure your new e-board member continues growth in what you predominantly work in and can start having more involvement in the other factors.

Connect with RHA Executive Board

Whether or not your RHA e-board already has transition documents that you can use to refer to or not, it is still helpful to connect with them. RHA and NRHH elections typically happen within a few days or weeks of each other. This means that both RHA and NRHH e-boards are preparing their newly elected executives for the next year. It can be helpful to both your NRHH and RHA to share what is being done on both ends so you can adapt these strategies to your own board.

Document What You Want to Teach

It sounds straightforward, but writing down what you want to teach can be really beneficial. It is important to come into your transition meetings prepared; if you don’t write down what you want to teach, you may forget to even bring it up. Additionally, writing everything down will allow these transition documents to be used for the future. This can be a list, a fully prepared document, anything that seems useful for you!
Fernando Cortes

Fernando Cortes is a second year majoring in Business Administration at the University of California, Riverside. He currently serves as the NRHH President for the Highlander Chapter of UC Riverside. In the past, he has served as the NRHH Director of Marketing & Technology.  He became involved in NRHH after hearing about it his first week at UCR. He went into college knowing he wanted to be involved, so he joined clubs right away. Giving back the community was a passion of his since high school, and he was excited to learn he could continue that with an organization within the Residence Halls. After joining, he had the opportunity to apply for one of his chapter's Director Positions. He quickly learned a lot about the organization, and more specifically its relationship with PACURH & NACURH. By the end of His first year, he knew he wanted to continue working with NRHH so he ran for and was electing the President of UCR's Chapter for his second year.

Fernando’s favorite thing about UC Riverside's NRHH Chapter is that it's still growing and creating an identity. Over the past few years, NRHH has separated from a sub-branch of UCR’s RHA organization, which has given the organization more freedom. It’s able to make a larger impact as they’ve gained more flexibility in creating leaders and making the Residence Halls a better place. As a growing and developing chapter, they're able to go in the direction they would like, as they discover how they want to make an impact for the residents. Above the local level, his favorite thing about NRHH is the leadership that is continuing to lead NRHH forward. When the NRHH executives get together, they have great discussions that better their own chapters. Their collective passion for NRHH is shown as they all have great ideas that will continue to make NRHH an outstanding organization as they create a more unified direction throughout the NACURH level.

When he’s not catching up on the latest episodes of The Blacklist, Scandal or Empire, Fernando enjoys laughing and spending time with friends. If you're looking for them, you can find them in line at one of the rides in Disneyland or California Adventure eating a Dole Whip or Chicken Strips!

Hee Yeon Hwang

Hee Yeon Hwang is a third year majoring in Psychology at the University of California, San Diego.  She currently serves as the NRHH Chair for the Sheila Ryan Chapter of UC San Diego. She first became involved with NRHH through the many friends she made through the Inter-College Residents' Association (ICRA), the all campus residence hall council. They all had recommended her to apply and she has been a member ever since Fall of 2014. Her favorite thing about NRHH is the people. The people in NRHH are all very welcoming and encouraging especially since they all highly value recognition. She loves seeing the friends she has made through NRHH every week during meeting and how warm they are towards one another. Hee Yeon’s interests and hobbies include sleeping and watching shows such as Bob’s Burgers, Steven Universe, and We Bare Bears.
Connor Logosz

Connor Logosz is a first year majoring in Planning, Public Policy, and Management, as well as Political Science at the University of Oregon. Connor is an active member in NRHH and began attending the meetings after one of the NRHH advisors presented at the Winter Leadership Retreat where Connor was in attendance. He felt that the values of NRHH represented his views and goals on the housing community at UO. Connor’s favorite thing about NRHH is being surrounded by the driven, kind, and supportive members of the chapter.

Our NRHH Chapter has done some fantastic events and programs over the past academic year.

In Fall term, we held a Halloween costume contest for kids from nearby elementary schools to participate in and compete for different awards. We also did a week-long program where residents could donate spare weekly meal points and have them be sent to a local non-profit (Food for Lane County) to be used to buy food for those in need.

In Winter term, we had an educational event to teach residents about OTMs and why they're important (as well as how you might go about writing one); also, we ran a program where residents could use their meal points to buy cans of soup and donate them in exchange for donuts. On top of those two, we ran the Week of Kindness program, a week-long set of events where, on each different day of Dead Week (the week before finals), we did a fun new thing for residents. This ranged from walking around campus randomly complimenting people to handing out goody bags full of helpful school supplies and candy.

Now, in Spring term, we're working on a formal dinner evening event to recognize people who have written OTMs and been written about; also, we're planning a trip to a nearby community garden where folks can participate in helping grow all sorts of food. On top of that, we're also planning an ice cream social event for residents to enjoy.

If there's one core value I think our chapter has hit on constantly this year, it's been Service. We've always been looking for different ways to serve not only the residents on this campus and the community here, but also the communities that go beyond this campus.

One example to show that would be the food points drive we did in Fall term. In doing that, we were able to provide service to many people in the Eugene area by giving residents an opportunity to use their spare meal points to help those in need. This is a good way that our chapter can demonstrate that we aren't just focused on providing service to our residents - we're focused on providing service to all those wonderful folks that surround us.

Another way we demonstrated service was during the Week of Kindness. This was one of our biggest and most anticipated programs. We were able to provide service in a handful of ways to residents that week. As mentioned before, we walked around giving out random compliments; we also gave out candy to folks, had goody bags full of helpful school supplies, and also had a give a card/get a card day (where people could come up and grab a card full of compliments on the condition that they leave one as well).

Those are just a couple of the ways that our chapter demonstrated that core value of Service.
