As many of you know, I was fortunate to attend the NACURH Semi-Annual Business Conference at the University of Delaware during the first week of January with Mason and Robert. This was an opportunity for the directorships of each region and office to come together and have important conversations and votes about the direction of NACURH. I would like to share the NRHH side of these conversations with you all so that you are in the loop.
The NNB (National NRHH Board) deconstructed every component of NRHH and what services it currently offers through NACURH. We also examined our SWOT analyses from our regions to begin our work on the NRHH Strategic Plan. We have created initiatives related to NRHH resources/services and redefining the organization's identity. Moving forward, a committee of NNB members will be working with Kaley, the NACURH Associate for NRHH, to create the physical strategic plan that will be voted on during the NRHH Business Meeting at NACURH 2016. A large survey will be sent to all chapters so that we can gather more information on chapter level processes and requirements.
The NNB saw three pieces of legislation during Semis, however none of them passed. Below is a breakdown of each piece.
16-04: This piece proposed changing the requirements for becoming a regional AD-NRHH to being an active or alumni member of NRHH, compared to the current requirement of being active. The NNB felt that it would be difficult for an institution to provide support to a bidding AD-NRHH without having an NRHH chapter at their institution. Many regions want to wait on this until after the completion and enactment of the strategic plan because the membership types (Active, Early Alumni, etc) are something that will be reexamined. The Pacific was in support of this piece for the inclusion to grad school students and to allow more flexibility for AD-NRHHs.
16-05: This piece proposed changing the name of National NRHH Board to NACURH NRHH Board. It was tabled back to the authors because of some issues with what documents in policy the piece would affect. As for the actual name change, some regions did not like the idea of having an acronym within an acronym. The Pacific was in support of this piece for the name change because of its inclusivity to our international affiliates.
16-06: This piece proposed particular definitions for each value to be in NRHH policy for chapters to use as a guide. There was good discussion around this piece, but ultimately it came down to wanting to have a bigger conversation with NRHH across NACURH and not a decision that the NNB should make right then. Some regions did not feel that defining the values was necessary because individual campuses/chapters should make that decision. The Pacific felt it was necessary to define the values to provide direction, but ultimately was not in support of the piece because we want a larger discussion and careful examination of wording.
Top 1%
The NNB had a conversation about the "top 1%" wording that is in NRHH vision statement. We discussed whether we felt it was inclusive and if it is something that we may want to change. Most regions, including the Pacific, would prefer to replace "top 1%", however it is a larger discussion that we have been advised to bring up with our reps at No Frills.
Scholastics
Currently, scholastics is referenced in the NRHH vision statement, but it is no longer a pillar. We had a conversation around possibly removing this language and is, again, a larger topic that we have been advised to discuss with reps at No Frills.
RA OTM Category
Many of you may remember the piece that was seen a few months ago around changing the RA OTM category to include all student staff in a single category. This was tabled to a committee, who could not reach a consensus on what to do. We had a conversation about the options at Semis and the board voted to have legislation written to keep the RA category and add a separate student staff category. It was voted that the NAN would be the one to write the piece and present it to the NNB to vote on before NACURH. The Pacific was in support of both of these decisions.
There was certainly a lot of topics discussed during the week at Semis. We all see a need for NRHH to find it's identity and move forward. If you would like to hear more about any of the discussions I have mentioned, please let me know and we can set up a meeting.
I hope you all are doing great and enjoying the long weekend!
