Either an application or any software provided by any website that converts 'location' into page number by providing the font size would be much appreciated. I'm using Kindle for more than a year now but can't seem to understand the meaning of 'location'. For some reason I just can't get hold of that measurement technique.
I am history Mlitt student and have only recently started to use a kindle for research purposes. At the moment I use the loc (location) reference that is produced by the kindle in the notes text file you can download from it, that shows all your highlights/bookmarks, but I am confused as to the proper citation method as my supervisor queried if this was the standard way of citing a kindle. I have a copy of my history department style-sheet but it makes no reference to kindle editions.
According to the APA blog, the location number is actually a bad idea because it has limited retrievability. The blog also mentions that since Kindle's third generation, e-books have started to have real page numbers, you may try looking into that.
The reason for citing a page number is so the exact quote can be found in context. In an electronic book, one can just do a search and find the exact location faster than just looking for the page number in a traditional book, so I would say it is not necessary.
[...] electronic formats do not always carry stable page numbers (e.g., pagination may depend on text size), a factor that potentially limits their suitability as sources. In lieu of a page number, include an indication of chapter or section or other locator.
For such unpaginated works, it may be appropriate in a note to include a chapter or paragraph number (if available), a section heading, or a descriptive phrase that follows the organizational divisions of the work. In citations of shorter electronic works presented as a single, searchable document, such locators may be unnecessary.
First, they would go into their KDP dashboard, and choose from a list of BISAC categories. This was crazy because there are only 4,800 categories, but Amazon actually has over 11,000 on their store.
From there, Amazon would take from your BISAC selection and put you into an Amazon category. Then, those that knew of this, could use a special form to contact Amazon and request a change of categories, and even addition of categories.
That's because Amazon is not just pulling from your chosen categories, they're looking at the big picture. And they even explicitly state in their TOS that they reserve the right to change the categories you are in:
One particular feature of this award-winning software, is that it lists every possible Amazon book, ebook, and Audible category on Amazon, and tells those valuable numbers we discussed above. You can see exactly how many books you need to sell in order to become the new #1 bestseller. This feature is a favorite amongst both publishers and self publishers alike.
Update: In the past, Amazon let you reach out to them directly in order to add up to 10 Amazon categories. As of May, 2023, they let authors add the categories themselves, but only 3, and they no longer take requests to change/update a category.
But that changed in June of 2023 when Amazon changed their system to use their own Amazon categories instead. This was a great change for authors, because it allowed authors to drill down to a more specific and appropriate category.
In MLA, it is not necessary to include the name of the e-reader used, and instead, you will specify that the version you accessed is the e-book edition in the version element of the citation. If you are accessing the e-book on a website, the URL can be included at the end of the citation. Page numbers can be omitted in both the in-text citation and full reference, but if needed for clarity, the chapter number can be included in the citation in prose.
For APA, cite the source as you would a regular book but add the DOI number or URL at the end (if applicable). If you need to include the specific text location in the in-text citation, you can include the chapter number if no page numbers are available.
For Chicago style, you will cite the source as a book and add the e-reader type or URL at the end of the reference. In the in-text citation, include the chapter number if page numbers are not available.
To cite a Kindle book without page numbers in APA and MLA styles, it is important that you know basic information such as the name of the author, title of the book, publisher name, and publication date. For in-text citations, the page number should simply be omitted. However, if needed, the chapter number can be added to the in-text citation if you need to reference a specific part of the text. The below examples show how to cite a Kindle book without page numbers in your full reference or works cited entries, as well as in-text citations.

Many eBooks now have page numbers which correlate with their print alternatives. If an eBook has page numbers then you provide those page numbers in your footnote, the same as you would for a print book. If an eBook does not have page numbers or does not have constant page numbers (e.g. in an eReader where the size of font or screen orientation can change the number of pages) then you can include a section title or a chapter or other number such as a paragraph number. If you are using a direct quote or paraphrase, be as specific as possible with the citation.
For entries in encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other reference works, cite the entry name as you would any other work in a collection but do not include the publisher information. Also, if the reference book is organized alphabetically, as most are, do not list the volume or the page number of the article or item.
