vmware vmtx templates

Hi All,

I am a newbie for packer. I am building templates for ubuntu machines on vmware.

I have a small query. The command:

packer build xyz.json

is giving me .vmx file rather than .vmtx files. I would want to create vmtx files. Am I missing out something? Am I using the correct command?

Hello,

Are you using packer with ESX?

My understanding is that packer can talk to ESX, and ESX doesn't have
the concept of Template.

Those options like deploy from OVF Template are done the remote
vSphere Client, but those aren't available from ESX.

I can't even clone a VM to a new VM from vSphere client or convert to
template. Those options seems to be available once you connect esx to
vCenter/vCentre

Hi

Did you manage to get this working at all? I.e Is it possible to get packer to do .vmtx connecting directly to vsphere at all, or does it only do vmx files. And then we have to manually create templates from vsphere!  Appreciate any response.
