Hello Packer community,

The Packer team is excited to announce the release of Packer 1.9.3.

This release continues our efforts to move away from bundled plugins by providing a new Docker hashicorp/packer:full image, fixes a regression introduced in 1.9.2 for loading plugins from the current work directory, and adds support for HCP project-level service principals.

Please note that plugins bundled into Packer are not updated as new plugin releases are made; users are encouraged to install plugins separately from Packer via the various plugin installation commands.

For a full list of changes please refer to the Packer CHANGELOG.

Notable Features:

  • hashicorp/packer:full image: The release-full image includes Packer and all the official

plugins pre-installed in its environment. This image is an alternative option for those users who may still be relying on the plugins bundled into the Packer binary.
  • Support for HCP project-level service principals: A user connecting with a project level service principal can now specify the HCP_PROJECT_ID  environment variable to select the project they wish to publish to.

Notable Fixes:

  • Loading of plugins in the current working directory: In Packer 1.9.2 there were improvements made to reduce directory depth scanning when loading external plugins. That change along with a security change to Go 1.19 caused Packer to skip plugins in the current working directory. This issue has been resolved and should continue to work as it did in previous versions of Packer prior to 1.9.2.

As always thank you for your continued support and contributions.

The Packer team
