Hi, unfortunatly this is one of those quesions which may irritate some, its not a what is the best, its more a supported platform before i shell out a bundle of cash..

I was testing packer this week on OSX high sierra and Vitualbox, and found that there is a known bug with latency causing the characters to display like hhhhhttttpppp:::///// when running.
thats ok, i understand why this is happening and the difficulty fixing it. Which lead me to looking to purchase Parallels or VMware Fusion, i downloaded the demo of parallels 13 and it seems I need the pro version to ge this to work which the demo doesn't activate so i couldn't test. VMware fusion 10 pro seemed to work. However its not cheap.

So my questions

1) which would mac users recommend specifically for working with packer Vmware or Virtualbox
2) Does the basic version of VMware Fusion 10 work with packer or do i need the pro version
3) is anyone using Parallels 13 pro and does it have any issues in the same way as Virtualbox does (or any others?)

I'm making this purcase specifically relating to Packer as with everything else (Docker, Puppet, Vagrant, Terraform) i can use Virtualbox so if i'm going to make that purchase i'd just like to be sure

thanks in advance.

hello

this is my personal opinion here, but I think vmware works great as doesn't do anything magic to get mac running.

it will boot from the partition and you can create a VM.

You can do one VM manually, create a user, say packer with a password, enable sudo without password, enable remote access ssh

and then you can use packer with vmware-vmx to start from this VM

will be fast and easy.

HI David

I do have within Vmware Fusion a VM running Vmware ESXi 6, I gave the vm 4 cores  ( minimum to run Vmware ESXi )  and 4-8 GB of mem but if you more available you can afford, I'd recommend to assign more so you have more flexibility when you create your our VMs within the ESXi .

You can download the VMWare ESXi 6.5 from the link below.. is a trial version but still will do it to give it a try..

Give it a try and let us know how it goes.. You will Loved all the Hashicorp products.. I've been using them for a while and the business cases you can use the tools for are Huge...

Good Luck..

Parallels Pro is also a good option, even it's a bitt more expensive, but you get more features, especially if you want to run Windows on your mac.

2) Does the basic version of VMware Fusion 10 work with packer or do i need the pro version
Both works fine

I think all of them have in theory, I run all three (VirtualBox, Parallels Pro, and VMware Fusion). I have seen this problem but only on occasion when my mac is under load from something else and I run three concurrent packer builds at the same time (which most of the time is fine on my MacBook Pro late 2013, i7).

IMHO If you don't have any other reason than the repeated key problem (https://github.com/hashicorp/packer/issues/2855) on VirtualBox I would start by investigating what's the cause of the high load.
