Dear Santa Cruz Scouters!

Let's help the City of Santa Cruz with this cool event (see below). Please sign up to volunteer here: https://runsignup.com/Race/Volunteer/CA/SantaCruz/RaceTheWaveSantaCruz

They are desperately in need of volunteers - especially at the intersections along Pacific makes downtown.

Each of those intersections will have a Road Closed sign/barricade on them to prevent vehicles from entering the road while runners and walkers are proceeding towards the clock tower.  As a public safety requirement, the PD requires that we have a person at each of those intersections.  It’s a pretty easy job - cheer the runners on and then pull the barricade to the side of the road once the runners have passed and the PD has indicated that the road can open to cross traffic.   They could be there for 45 minutes to an hour depending on where they are on the course.

Wear your field uniform or class B Tshirt. Let's show Santa Cruz that Scouts are in town 🙂

Eugenia,

If you can spread the word about the need for volunteers that would be awesome.  We are desperately in need of volunteers - especially at the intersections along Pacific makes downtown.

Each of those intersections will have a Road Closed sign/barricade on them to prevent vehicles from entering the road while runners and walkers are proceeding towards the clock tower.  As a public safety requirement the PD requires that we have a person at each of those intersections.  It’s a pretty easy job - cheer the runners on and then pull the barricade to the side of the road once the runners have passed and the PD has indicated that the road can open to cross traffic.   They could be there for 45 minutes to an hour depending on where they are on the course.

To be fully staffed we need about 20 people and right now we only have three!

If you have a list we could reach out to, or can get the word out with your peers and other departments that would be great.

If you have any questions please call me (831-419-0883) or email me at this address.

Thank you,

Penni Bengtson

That's great! If you have water covered, we'll just be there to cheer the runners at the finish line. Can we still set up a table?

Thank you for organizing such a great event!

Hi Evgenia,

I am including Meredith (our EOC Manager),she will be at the finish line/preparedness fair at the finish. We actually already have water and cups covered but I know they are looking for volunteers to help cheer the runner at the finish line and other parts of the race. At this moment we have 202 runners signed up and estimating 225 by the race! I have included Pennie our race coordinator also, she is helping lead our volunteer effort and can answer any additional questions!

Hi Katie,

I plan on being at the finish line. Do you have an estimate on how many participants you will have? I will ask for water donation or bring a couple of water dispensers and cups.

Hello,
Thank you again for making it out to NNO and tabling! The city of Santa Cruz is gearing up for the Race the Wave on September, 13th and we need volunteers to help make this event a success.  I thought that maybe there were a few seniors or Eagles scouts that might be looking for service hours and could volunteer? They have to be 18+ year old to stand by them selves as a volunteer.
Race the Wave combines a functional evacuation exercise, a community fun run, and an emergency preparedness fair hosted by the City of Santa Cruz during National Preparedness Month. This event reinforces the City's commitment to tsunami preparedness and hazard mitigation while highlighting the shared responsibility to protect public infrastructure, such as the Wharf.
We are looking for people to help with guiding participants along the route or assisting at check-in./bib pick up.
Volunteer Details for Day of Race:
📅 Date: Saturday, September 13, 2025
🕒 Time Commitment: Varies based on location of the course monitor, 7:30 am - 9/ 9:30 am (some end at 10 am), Race Day Packet Pickup will be 6:30 am - 8:30 am, and Pre-Race Packet Pick up will be Sept. 11 from 3:45-7:15 pm
Sign up here to Volunteer or read more about different volunteer options: Race The Wave Volunteer Registration
Thank you for helping us making Race the Wave an unforgettable event and let me know if you have any questions.
