Pack/Den Leaders,

A Den Leader mentioned wanting to skip the November 1st Pack meeting since we are doing the Halloween Party the week before. The Halloween Party could count as our November Pack Meeting. I thought I would run a couple of options past the group:

1. Skip November 1st Pack Meeting - No Meeting November 1st
2. Turn November 1st Meeting into Den Meeting.

If we skip the November 1st Pack Meeting, scouts will have to wait to get their Bobcat Badges until December. If we keep the November 1st Pack Meeting, scouts will need to work on earning their Bobcat badge during the next Den Meeting, 10/11. Also, we have Scouting for Food next month. November 4th is Door Hanger Distribution and November 11 Scouting for Food Pick-Up.

What is everyone's preference?

Another possibility is to cancel the pack meeting and hold our committee
meeting at that time instead.

I have no strong objection to cancelling.

We can issue the Bobcat badges at the Halloween meeting if they are earned
by then. (This is likely to have high attendance by scouts and parents so it's
a completely reasonable setting for awarding badges.)

Yes I vote to award the bobcat badges at the Halloween party and cancel/skip the nov 1 meeting. If scouts aren’t ready by then, we can award the bobcat badges in December?

I agree with Wylie and Mike. I think we should skip the Nov 1 meeting, award bobcat badges at the Halloween Party, and hold a committee meeting on Nov 1st.

Mike, will you be organizing Scouting for Food? Do you need help getting the door tags? I can put up a sign-up sheet on Shutterfly like we did last year. I think we had people sign-up for different time slots. I can help out the first weekend, Nov 4, but will be out of town the following weekend.

Lastly, I noticed the San Jose Sharks are hosting a Scout Night on Friday, December 9th. More info can be found here: https://oss.ticketmaster.com/aps/sharks/EN/promotion/home
Maybe, this could be our December outing. We can discuss at the committee meeting.

For Scouting for Food, yes - I picked up 600 door hangers and claimed the
Rivermark area for our pack. Yes, if you create a sign-up sheet, that would
be great.

Don Callejon is doing a fundraiser on November 4 from 9-3. They are doing a Goodwill drive to raise money for the school along with the Girl Scouts who are collecting coats for the charity, One Warm Coat. I think we would be able to collect more cans if we join them. Everyone is already cleaning out their closets. Why not their pantries. I've already spoken with the coordinator for the Goodwill drive, and she would be happy to have us there as well. This would mean we wouldn't have to go out an additional Saturday to collect cans. We could help spread the word through neighborhood yahoo groups, facebook, nextdoor, etc.

What are everyone's thoughts on this?

I think this is a good idea if it doesn't take away from our
supply of volunteers to distribute the flyers on the same day.
I don't think we can change the format of Scouting for Food
(distribute flyers on the 4th, collect from same houses on
the 11th). But we could make an additional collection of food
and merge it into what we collect on the 11th.

Why can't we change the format of Scouting for Food? It seems like we put a lot of effort and time into distributing door hangers and searching for cans but receive very few cans. People in the neighborhood don't know that we do this. I imagine many, like me, don't look at the flyers on their door but just assume they are junk.

It we are serious about our charitable efforts, I think should put our scout power behind something that would produce bigger results. I volunteered for the Goodwill drive last spring, and it was a very busy event. They filled a truck and then some. People were coming through with van/truck/car loads of items. Additionally, having a large presence at the school during this event can bring increased awareness to the Cub Scouts and Don Callejon.

Scouting for Food is a national BSA activity and is organized
by the council and and I'm not as comfortable replacing it as I
am with augmenting it.  Let's do both.  It sounds like doing the
food drive at the Goodwill event could produce a good result
for the effort, I'm for it.
