About Troop 5
Troop 5 has both a boys and girls troop and is open to all. Troop 5 is a scout-led troop. That is, under the supervision and guidance of the adult leaders, the senior scouts plan and organize the monthly weekend trips. Senior scouts also organize, instruct and direct the younger scouts in meal planning & budgeting, food shopping, cooking, cleaning, camp set-up and break-down, and other elements of camping. As younger scouts mature, they are brought into trip planning and organizing, and other troop leadership roles. While this occasionally makes for interesting meals, we find that this process best helps us develop self-sufficiency, teamwork, and leadership in the spirit of England's Lord Baden-Powel, the originator of scouting.

We meet every Tuesday during the school year from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Calvary United Methodist Church, 1415 Miller (intersection of Miller & Newport), Ann Arbor, MI 48103.

Every month, Troop 5 goes on a weekend camping trip organized around some adventure. Recent trips include: rock climbing, caving, bicycling, skiing, target shooting, and outdoor gourmet cooking.

In May, the weekend trip is our annual Family Campout, held over Memorial Day weekend. Parents and siblings join the troop in locations such as Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, to get a taste of scouting and meet the other troop families.

In early summer, Troop 5 goes on a week-long High Adventure trip. Past High Adventure trips include: Canoeing in Boundary Waters, Hiking in Montana's Glacier National Park, Sailing in Lake Huron's North Channel, Hiking in Lake Superior's Grand Island National Recreation Area, Kayaking in Lake Superior's Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, and visiting scouts in Japan. Fundraising events are organized to offset the cost of High Adventure.

Later in the summer, scouts are encouraged to attend Scout Camp with the troop. Camp allows scouts to earn merit badges, and rank advancement, at an accelerated pace while having traditional camp fun.
