1970 Richard Alan Niemi (35)
Monterey Peninsula Herald, CA Aug. 27, 1988
Sheriff's Deputy Found Dead in His Home
A Monterey County Sheriff's deputy was found dead Saturday in the
kitchen of his Pacific Grove home. The cause of death of Richard Alan
Niemi, 35, a five-year veteran of the Sheriff's apartment, remains
under investigation. An autopsy has been performed but no conclusions
have been drawn, according to coroner's division Sgt. Glen Brown.
Brown said that it will be several weeks before toxicology test results
will be available. "That's all I can tell you right now," Brown
said. "There are a lot of pieces to put together." Sheriff Bud Cook
said that the death is being investigated as a possible suicide. Chief
Deputy Charles Foster said that Niemi had been depressed during the
last month. Cook said Niemi had been on sick leave for the past month.
"He wasn't feeling too good in the last month or so," Foster
said. "I didn't think it would be job-related. It probably was more
his personal life." However, Sgt. Joe Grebmeier, Niemi's watch
commander on the midnight shift at the Monterey substation said: "In
my book it's all job related. I've just buried too many friends.
You fluctuate between wanting to cry, throw up or get mad." Niemi's
body was found at 10:15 a.m. Saturday by Annette Calmus, who shared the
house with him at 517 11th St. Grebmeier called Nieme the kind of
deputy who "carried his own beat," always the first on back-up, the
first on a rescue, the first over the side of a cliff and the first to
jump into a fire. "At one time or another he probably pulled the
chestnuts out for everybody," Grebmeier said. "Wherever there was a
problem, Richard was there." A corporal and field training officer,
Niemi received several commendations since he was sworn as a full-time
deputy on April 16, 1984. Prior to that he had served for a year as a
reserve deputy. Last October, he received a commendation for a
high-speed pursuit and capture of a burglary suspect on Carmel Valley
Road. He also was commended several times by Carmel police officers for
helping them and by the California Fireman's Association for his role
in the attempted rescue of several people who drowned at Monastery
Beach in July 1986. An expert swimmer and scuba diver, the tall blond
deputy was a member of the Sheriff's Search and rescue team and the
Sheriff's dive unit. He also served for several months recently in
the coroner's division. "I think Richard always thought of himself
as a Viking," Grebmeier said. An avid fan of science fiction and
Nordic folklore, Niemi had a sharp sense of humor, attempting to
"make the joke subtle, deep and complex," Grebmeier said. A 1971
graduate of Pacific Grove High School, Niemi never lost his interest in
mathematics and physics from his studies there, Grebmeier said. He was
a member of the Peace Officers Research Association of California and
the Sons of the Desert. He was also an Eagle Scout. Born April 9, 1953,
in Albuquerque, N.M., he was a 25-year resident of the Peninsula. Prior
to his association with the Sheriff's department, Niemi was a lineman
with Pacific Bell Telephone Co. Survivors include a son, Erik of
Watsonville; a daughter, Erin of Watsonville; two sisters, Ann of New
Orleans, La., and Jill of South Carolina; parents, Roy and Virginia
Niemi of Monterey; and a grandmother, Marie Catalano of Monterey.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Paul
Mortuary. Services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the mortuary
chapel, with burial following at El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove.

1970 Michael Edwin Roberts aka Max Roluph Robert (37)
Monterey Peninsula Herald, CA July 14, 1990
Max Robert, Emmy nominee, artist, dies
By Alex Hulanicki / Herald Staff Writer
Max Robert spent his life using his imagination to make people laugh,
to laugh at themselves and to understand others. A talented artist,
musician, costume designer and playwright, he used silly songs, serious
poetry and whimsical animal costumes to share hs emotions about life.
And in the past four years, Mr. Robert faced his approaching death from
AIDS by sharing his emotions with close friends and in benefit
performances for AIDS support groups. He called a recent collection of
songs, "Close to the Heart." Saturday, Mr. Robert died of AIDS at
Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. He was 37. "Emotions
are just emotions, and all emotions can help your immune system if you
let them out; they are destructive if you hold them in," Mr. Robert
said in an interview with The Herald in December. A Pacific Grove
resident, Mr. Robert spent most of his life performing on the stage,
making himself accessible to others and others accessible to him.
"One of the thins so moving about Max is that in his own way, he ws
the closest thing to a genius I ever brushed up against," said Tom
Knechtel, who worked with Mr. Robert during the 1980s at Helpers Homes
for Mentally Retarded. Mr. Robert designed animal toy patterns for the
Helpers Homes for production and sale. Knechtel said that in Mr.
Robert's production of "Upon a Dying Lady," performed in San
Francisco in 1973, and in his other works, such as "The Secret Lives
of the Teddy Bears" and his costumes and scripts for television's
"Pee Wee's Playhouse," people "had a sense they had no seen any
work like that and they wouldn't ever see it again." Steve Hauk,
The Herald's drama critic, called "Teddy Bears" "zany and a bit
off the wall." "It's got something for the kids, though it is a
tiny bit risque - Goldilocks is a knockout and Grizzly teaches her to
play house - and plenty for the adults: nostalgia, satire, good
times, amusing characterizations and well, Goldilocks," Hauk wrote in
January 1985. Born July 27, 1952, in Fort Riley, Kan., Michael Edwin
Roberts first performed on the stage at age six in a military theater
production of "The Seven-Year Itch." He changed his name to Max
Robert during his search for a professional identity because "there
were so many Michael Roberts around that it got to be really a drag."
Young Michael never lost the itch for the stage. With encouragement
from his parents, he studied piano, wrote songs, designed costumes and
directed theatrical productions. He animated a cartoon while in high
school and wrote the senior class play, "Mama Ha-Ha's Wonderful
Moon invention" at Pacific Grove High School. A 1970 graduate of
Pacific Grove High School, Michael also wrote a musical score, St.
Barbra's Suite, for Monterey's Bicentennial celebration that year.
He first came to the Peninsula in 1963, left for college studies at
California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, where he graduated in
1973, and returned to Pacific Grove in 1981. "The clarity of his
paintings. The music he composed. The costumes he designed. I saw the
force of his mental strength in his work," said Beatrice Manley, a
teacher and collegue at the Institute for the Arts. Ms. Manley visited
Mr. Robert at the hospital Saturday just hours before his death. "I
was very lucky to be with him," she said. "There was a laughter in
his eyes that reminded me about his enormous sense of humor. He saw
life in a way that always made me smile." Lillian Griffiths, a
longtime friend and drama teacher at Pacific rove High School, recalled
how Mr. Robert talked her into wearing a "Snoopy" costume at
Monterey's Bicentennial. "He just touched so many people in so many
different ways. People got to know him well so quickly. He was very
open." Eventually, Mr. Robert designed "Snoopy" toys for
Determined Productions in San Francisco and Paris from 1974 to 1980. In
1987, he collaborated with Paul Reubens, who plays Pee Wee Herman, on
"Pee Wee's Playhouse." Mr. Robert was nominated for four Emmy
Awards for his writing and costume designs for the daytime show, and a
fifth Emmy for the prime-time Pee Wee Herman Christmas Show. Mr. Robert
devoted much of his time recently to the Monterey County AIDS Project,
the John XXIII Ministry and to co-editing "Reach," a newsletter of
shared spirituality for and about people with AIDS, according to the
Rev. Al Syslo of the John XXII Ministry. The newsletter has a national
circulation of about 1,200. Last September, Mr. Robert told Pacific
magazine that part of his "life blood is inspiration." "If I can
get inspired about something I feel alive," he said. "I think that
being an artist is a very healthy existence for that reason, although I
used to think it was a curse because it was so hard. The artist, you
know, is supposed to be searching for truth and trying to reveal it to
others. That's a life-long goal." Mr. Robert is survived by his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Darrell S. Roberts of Pebble Beach, and a
brother, William C. Roberts of London, England. Memorial services will
be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of
Pacific Grove. After cremation, inturment will be at El Carmelo
Cemetery in Pacific Grove. The family suggests that any memorial
contributions go to John XXIII Ministry, P.O. Box 1931, Monterey 93942,
to the Monterey County AIDS Project, P.O. Box 2081, Monterey 93942, or
to the donor's favorite charity.
