Edmund C. Hurlbutt Jr., was born in Chicagoff, Alaska on May 27, 1921
and passed away on Sept. 22, 2006 in Visalia, Calif. Ed's father,
Edmund C. Hurlbutt Sr., was a cowboy who sailed from northern
California to Alaska at a young age to earn his fortune in the Klondike
Gold Rush. His mother, Ann E. Hurlbutt, moved to Alaska from Amador
County, Calif. with her brothers who were miners. As an infant, Ed
moved with his parents and his older sister, Patricia, from Alaska to
Pacific Grove, Calif. where his father managed the Del Monte Sand Plant
which is now the site of Spanish Bay Golf Course and Resort. Ed
attended grade school and high school in Pacific Grove, graduating from
Pacific Grove High School in 1938. During high school, he played both
basketball and tennis and was elected student body president. He built
a pole vault/high jump pit in his backyard and organized neighborhood
track meets. He and his sister, Patricia, were formidable tennis
partners who won area high school doubles championships. He had a paper
route and used a sawed off broom handle wrapped inside a newspaper to
ward off unfriendly dogs, whose owners were none the wiser. After high
school, Ed entered the University of Santa Clara on an athletic
scholarship, but earned an academic scholarship at the close of
basketball season his freshman year. He competed in basketball and
tennis, earning a state ranking in collegiate tennis, and served as
both editor of the student newspaper and student body president. His
sister Patricia fondly remembers his hitchhiking trips home during
school breaks because he always arrived home with a pocketful of
crushed lupens, picked along the roadside, for his mother. Ed met his
future wife, Juanita Dreier, at an intercollegiate conference while she
was attending Holy Names College in Oakland. Their married life
together was postponed by World War II. Upon graduation from college,
Ed entered the United States Army as a commissioned artillery officer
with the 33rd division and fought campaigns in both New Guinea and the
Philippines. He earned both the Silver Star and the Bronze Star for
gallantry in action and was training for the invasion of the Japanese
home islands when the war ended. After a brief assignment to the
occupation forces, he returned home and married Juanita in March of
1946. Like most returning servicemen at that time, Ed wasted no time in
pursuing his career. He entered law school at the University of Santa
Clara under the G.I. Bill and graduated at the top of his class in
1948. He then accepted a position with the Visalia law firm of
McFadzean, Crowe and Mitchell. Juanita was expecting their first child,
so she stayed with her parents while he moved to Visalia to find an
appropriate home. Juanita did join him in Visalia in time for the birth
of their first child, Jacqueline Anne, in May of 1949. As an attorney,
Ed earned the reputation as one of the finest trial attorneys in the
San Joaquin Valley. His work included defense of personal injury
actions, complex professional liability claims, water law cases and
complex business disputes. He was a member of the American Board of
Trial Advocates (ABOTA), Northern California Defense Counsel and he
served as President of the Tulare County Bar Association. In 1969, he
and two other partners established the law firm of Hurlbutt, Clevenger
and Long. Upon his retirement in 1991, the firm was known as Hurlbutt,
Clevenger, Long, Vortmann, Rauber and Nelson. Ed was perhaps best known
for his active involvement in and contribution to the Visalia
community. He served as President of the Visalia Chamber of Commerce in
1956, a member of the Kaweah Delta Hospital Citizen's Advisory
Committee, President of the Associated Ingroup Donors (AID) in 1964
after becoming one of its original members, President of the Visalia
Rotary Club in 1964-1965 and an original member of the Tulare County
Trade Club. In 1959, Ed actively participated as a committee member in
connection with the construction of the now existing St. Mary's
Catholic Church. He was a devout Catholic and served on many councils
and boards of St. Mary's Parish, taught in the CCD program and was a
life long member of the Knights of Columbus. In 1968, Ed chaired the
Citizens For Better Schools Committee, which played a key role in the
passage of a school bond and tax override measure in November of 1968.
This was the last successful school bond measure for the Visalia
Unified School District until 1998. The moneys generated by the school
bond were used to construct the now existing Redwood High School
gymnasium and administration building and to repair and refurbish other
classrooms on the campus. Following the passage of the school bond, Ed
was elected and served a term on the Board of Supervisors of the
Visalia Unified School District. Ed received many honors for his
accomplishments and service including Visalia's Young Man Of The Year
(1956), Visalia's Man Of The Year (1968), and a 1990 Distinguished Good
Citizen Award from the Mt. Whitney Area Council of Boy Scouts of
America. He was highly respected as an astute advisor and contributor
in legal, business and civic affairs. He was an active member of the
Visalia Rotary Club, Moose Club, Elks Lodge and Tulare County Trade
Club. In his younger years in Visalia, Ed enjoyed playing basketball in
city leagues. He continued to play tennis throughout his active years
and maintained regular Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning tennis
matches with his friends Gordon Pendegraft, Russell Doe, Stanley
Simpson and others. He and his wife Juanita played golf on Sundays and
they often traveled to the Monterey Peninsula to gallery professional
golf tournaments. In 1963 he bravely took his family, his mother and
Juanita's parents on a cross-country train trip to the New York World's
Fair. He skippered his El Toro and Day Sailer at Huntington Lake, Morro
Bay and San Diego Bay, and he took his family on multiple summer
camping vacations to northern California, Oregon, Idaho, Washington,
Montana and Canada. Unfortunately, Ed's active life was severely
diminished and ultimately stopped by the onset and slow progression of
Parkinson's disease which resulted in a very long period of
confinement. He received the loving care and attention of Mrs. Mary
Pena, Alice Pena, Mrs. La Donna Nye, Mrs. Wanda Nelsen, Dixie Lee
Jones, and other care givers provided by Kaweah Delta Private Home
Health Care. He endured his long illness with his customary
determination and grace, and passed away peacefully in his Visalia home
with his family present. Ed will be sorely missed by his surviving
family members which include not only his loving wife of 60 years,
Juanita, and his dearly loved sister, Patricia de Lorimier of Salinas,
but also his children, as follows: Jacqueline Anne Hurlbutt and her
husband, Norman Waite, Jr., of Beaver Creek, Colorado; Edmund C.
Hurlbutt III and his wife, Cathy Hurlbutt of Kerman, Calif.; Thomas R.
Hurlbutt and his wife, Moria Foley Hurlbutt of La Canada, Calif.; and
James P. Hurlbutt and his wife, Karen E. Hurlbutt of Visalia,
California. His grandchildren include Therese Elizabeth Hurlbutt,
Thomas Edmund Hurlbutt, Catherine Dreier Hurlbutt, Lauren Elizabeth
Hurlbutt, Mary Kaitlyn Hurlbutt and Kevin Michael Hurlbutt. Additional
grandchildren (and their spouses) include Regina Leathers and her
husband Lamar Leathers, Dawn Hopkins and her husband Mark Hopkins,
Catherine Waite and her husband Andrew Parlour, Lindsay Waite and her
husband, Brad Seaman; and Norman Waite III. His surviving
great-grandchildren include Hailey Leathers, Emily Hopkins, Kyle
Hopkins, Elliana Hopkins, Melissa Parlour, Alexander Parlour, Michael
Seaman, Scott Seaman and Hanna Leathers. Rosary will be recited on
Friday, Sept. 29, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. at Salser and Dillard in Visalia,
Calif. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Sept.
30, 2006 at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Visalia, with
burial immediately thereafter at the Visalia District Cemetery. Ed's
family requests that any memorials be directed either to Right To Life
Of Central California's Tulare-Kings Chapter (Tulare-Kings Right To
Life), P.O. Box 3531, Visalia, California, 93278 or to the building
