Popular PG Youth Dies Of Injuries
S 1/c Joe Canaya Succumbs; 3 Other Youths Recovering
Funeral services were held Tuesday for S1/c Joseph Canaya of Pacific
Grove. Young Canaya, outstanding high school athlete and popular member
of the younger set of Pacific Grove died Saturday morning in Monterey
hospital. His death was attributed to injuries received in an auto
accident near Ft. rd last Friday night, when the car which he was
driving went out of control and turned over twice. Three other
occupants of the car, Thomas Flint Jr., Joyce Johnson and Joan Apathy,
were injured, the latter seriously. All three were recovering this
week, although the Apathy girl was still hospitalized on Tuesday.
Following the accident late Friday night, the victims were rushed to
Monterey hospital by a passing motorist and a taxicab driver. Young
Canaya, conscious and able to walk, at first refused treatment at the
hospital, according to Miss Johnson, but, was later persuaded by
attendants to submit to examination. His injures were found to be
serious, and despite all efforts to save the youth he died at 8:15 a.m.
Saturday. According to Miss Johnson, the quartet of Grove youths was
returning from a trip to Santa Cruz when a blowout caused Canaya to
lose control of the machine. Young Canaya, due to be discharged from
the navy within a short time, was well known on the peninsula as one of
Pacific Grove High School's most stellar athletes. He won letters in
both football and basketball and established a national record in the
lightweight pole vault class. He made All-CCAL, in football and
basketball for two seasons straight. The young sailor is survived by
his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Canaya Sr., of 315 Third
street here and by the grandmother, Mrs. Ella Marshall of Monterey. The
full military service was held at St. Angela's church at three
o'clock Tuesday, Aug. 6, preceded by brief rites at the Dorney
funeral chapel. Rev. Father C.T. Kerts officiated at both the funeral
and rosary, said at eight o'clock the previous evening. Active pall
bearers were six men of the navy. Honorary pallbearers, most of them
former schoolmates at the local high school, were Hugh Jenkins, Marvin
Harris, Thomas Flint Jr., Reid Cerney, Norman Enos, Garth Christensen,
Roger Britlinger, Dennis Black. A navy firing squad participated in the
graveside rites in the Monterey Catholic cemetery with a navy bugler
sounding taps. Many floral offerings expressed the sympathy of the
community and the funeral services were marked by large attendance of
youths from peninsula towns.

Grove Senior Drowns In Big Sur Accident
Ronald Fifer was buried yesterday in his graduation clothes. He drowned
at a senior class picnic, Wednesday, of the Pacific Grove High School
at Big Sur. The 18-year-old youth was wading in the turbulent Big Sur
on an excursion with some other youths. Below a bend in the river raced
a whirlpool. A group of classmates watching nearby yelled a frantic
warning. But their cry was lost in the roar of the stream. Seconds
later Fifer was pulled under as his horror-stricken classmates looked
on. Immediate but futile rescue attempts were made by classmates Ben
Mosely, Richard Taras and Jim Gouthwell. The body was recovered some
fifteen minutes later by State Rangers. Resuscitation attempts failed.
Deputy Coroner Chris Hill attributed death to drowning. Val Clement,
class advisor, and Naomi Giddings, counselor, attended the picnic with
the 70 students scheduled to graduate June 12. Fifer is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Robert Fifer of 1001 David Avenue, Pacific Grove. His father
is an upholsterer. In addition to his parents he is survived by three

39 YEARS LATER, AIRMAN BURIED
Parents held out hope for years that son was alive
By KEVIN HOWE / Herald Staff Writer
A Pebble Beach man whose attack jet was shot down over North Vietnam on
March 24, 1967, has been buried with full military honors at Arlington
National Cemetery. The recovery, identification and interment of the
remains of Navy Lt. Cmdr. James Edwin Plowman closes a 39-year chapter
that began with the loss of the A-6 Intruder piloted by Lt. Cmdr. Buzz
Ellison in which Plowman was flying as bombardier-navigator. They were
on a night strike mission off the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk over
Ha Bac Province in North Vietnam on Good Friday. According to the Navy,
radar contact with their aircraft was lost as they were leaving the
target area after bombing a power station, and a pilot in another
aircraft reported two missile warnings on his radar screen immediately
before contact was lost with Plowman and Ellison's aircraft. His
parents, Edwin and Catherine Murray Plowman, held out hope for years
that their son was alive. In 1970, the Plowmans erected a billboard in
Seaside showing an American flag and stating, "Hanoi... Where is Jim
Plowman? Why can't he write?" Plowman was 23 when he was shot down. He
had married his wife Katherine 11 days before he shipped out for
Vietnam. The following August, Katherine Plowman bore their son, James
Jr. Prisoners of war were released by North Vietnam in 1973, and
Plowman, whom the Vietnamese said was never captured by them, was
declared dead in 1974. His wife subsequently remarried and is living in
Virginia, where his son, now 38, is chief public prosecutor for Loudoun
County. Plowman's mother died in April 1989 and his father, a retired
Navy aviator and former principal of Pacific Grove Middle School, in
1996. In addition to his son, Plowman is survived by a brother, John
Plowman. Born in Miami on Oct. 14, 1943, he came to the Monterey
Peninsula with his family in 1960 and graduated from Pacific Grove High
School in 1961. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of
Washington, where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity, and was
commissioned an ensign in the Navy through the university's Reserve
Officer Training Program in June 1965. That year he also received the
Sons of the American Revolution award given by the Washington State
Society of the SAR. Between 1993 and 1996, U.S. and Vietnamese teams,
led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command, conducted three
investigations in Ha Bac Province. The team interviewed two local
villagers who saw the 1967 crash, and both men recalled seeing human
remains at the site. The team also surveyed the purported crash site
and found several small fragments of aircraft wreckage. In 1996,
another joint American and Vietnamese team excavated the suspected
crash site and found human remains amid the scattered wreckage. The
team was also handed some remains by a local villager who claimed to
have recovered it while scavenging the crater for metal. Among other
forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists
from Joint Accounting Command and the Armed Forces DNA Identification
Laboratory also used mitochondrial DNA to identify the remains.
Plowman's burial took place at Arlington on Sept. 20.

Nine Dead in County Crashes
Presidio Curve Collision Death Toll Reaches 6
Six persons are dead and four others injured as a result of
Monterey's worst traffic accident, which occurred at 1:54 a.m.
yesterday on Presidio Curve. In the collision, a car occupied by five
Fort Ord soldiers rammed headon into one occupied by five Monterey
Peninsula civilian youths. Dead: Jan Elton Gates, 16, of 1101 Del Monte
Blvd., Pacific Grove, a driver. John McGraw, 17, of 410 Park, Pacific
Grove; Larry D. Taylor, 21, of 753 Jessie St., Monterey; Willie J.
Hamilton, 23, of Fort Ord and Waxahachie, Tex., the second driver;
James L. Gladden, 23, of Fort Ord and Charleston, S.C.; Richard F.
Swan, 20, of Fort Ord and Falkner, Md. Injured: Robert N. Mitchell, 16
of 512 17th St., Pacific Grove, reported in satisfactory condition at
Monterey Hospital; Willie J. Mitchell, 19, of Fort Ord and Deland,
Fla., reported in critical condition at Fort Ord Hospital; Robert T.
Williams, 20, of Fort Ord and Dallas, N.C, reported in critical
condition at Fort Ord Hospital; Houston Sparkman, 19, of 615 17th St.,
Pacific Grove, reported in good condition at Fort Ord Hospital. McGraw,
Robert Mitchell, Taylor and Sparkman were passengers in Gates' car,
Gladden, Swan, Willie Mitchell and Williams were riding with Hamilton.
Most of the victims suffered head and facial and internal injuries.
Sparkman was an exception. He suffered a broken ankle and cuts. Police
said the accident occurred when Hamilton, driving at a speed estimated
at 85 miles per hour, lost control while heading in the direction of
Monterey. The speeding auto traveled about 240 feet along a divider
strip composed of rocks, gravel and plants, then into the path of
Gates' oncoming car. Officers said there was "nothing that Gates
could do. He had no time to react. There was less than two seconds from
the time that the other car entered the divider strip until it hit
him." They said Gates was probably driving around 30-35 miles an
hour, that Hamilton's car had possibly slowed down to 65-70 miles an
hour at the instant of impact. Police calculated that the force of
impact was equivalent to that of a car ramming into a solid wall at
more than 100 miles per hour. The five Fort Ord men had been to a party
at a Cannery Row restaurant. The Peninsula youths apparently had just
been riding around town, officers said. A partially consumed bottle of
whisky was found in the soldiers' car. Coroner Christopher Hill Jr.
said he does not expect to have a report into the blood alcohol content
of any of the soldiers until a late hour today. Police said they had
been unable to question any of the injured but that there were some
witnesses who would be interrogated later this afternoon. The point of
impact on Presidio Curve was about 500 feet north of the
Pacific-Alvarado-Lighthouse intersection. Two A1 Ambulances responded,
as well as an ambulance from the Seaside Fire Department. Hamilton and
McGraw were pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m. at Community Hospital. At the
same hour, Gladden, Swann and Gates were pronounced dead at Monterey
Hospital. Taylor died at 10:30 a.m. today at Community Hospital.
Sparkman, although a civilian, was taken to Fort Ord Hospital because
his is a military dependant.

of 512 17th St., Pacific Grove, reported in satisfactory condition at
Monterey Hospital; Willie J.

Betty Ann (Weldy) Young
Monterey County Herald, CA (online ed) Nov 30, 2006
January 19, 1954 ~ November 22, 2006 KILLEEN, TX - A memorial service
for Betty Ann Young, 52, will be held at 4:00 PM on Sunday, December 3,
2006 at Killeen Bible Church with Pastor Joe Kelley officiating. Her
husband wishes that those who want to share the remembrances of Betty
Ann's life may do so at that time. A reception will follow the service.
Betty Ann was born January 19, 1954, in Japan to Lamar W. and Cheiko
Weldy. She died of a sudden illness on November 22, 2006 at home in
Killeen, Texas. Betty Ann grew up in the California coastal town of
Pacific Grove and attended schools there. She and her husband met as
7th graders and for a time went steady. They went their separate ways
in high school only to reunite later and get married. After graduating
high school, she worked at several secretarial jobs until finding a job
as a dental assistant which she truly loved. She reunited with her
husband about that time and married on November 24, 1979. After 18
months of marriage, her husband joined the Air Force and she followed
with him to Washington, Oklahoma, and finally to Texas, where he
retired from active duty in Killeen nearly four years ago. She is
survived by her husband of nearly 27 years, John; her sister, Janet
Grattan and niece, Sarah Grattan of Salinas, California; and cousin
David Weldy of Chelan, Washington. Betty Ann had passions for many
things and was a loving and giving friend to many. She was a gifted
musician and shared those talents teaching piano and flute during the
travels with her husband. Though physical problems kept her from much
of that activity late in her life, her husband plans to publish some of
the songs that she wrote. She also loved animals and cherished the
littermate kittens that she brought into her house 13 months ago. Her
husband requests that in lieu of flowers, because of Betty Ann's love
for animals, that a donation may be made in her memory to a local
animal shelter or to the ASPCA.
