These are obituaries of people who were born in Pacific Grove, CA, of
people who died in Pacific Grove, of people who have
relatives/survivors living in Pacific Grove, people who are buried in
Pacific Grove (El Carmelo Cemetery), people whose funerals were
arranged by Paul's Mortuary of Pacific Grove, or cremated by the
Little Chapel by-the-Sea in Pacific Grove, people who visited, got
married in or loved Pacific Grove, and people who mentioned Pacific
Grove in their obituaries for any reason. I have added a few obituaries
that did not mention Pacific Grove, but the deceased were known to have
graduated from or attended Pacific Grove High School (verified from
files of Pacific Grove High School Alumni Association). Where multiple
obituaries were found for the same person, but only one mentioned
Pacific Grove, all are included. Most of these obits I have collected
and archived and have in my possession (e-mail me and I can send a
copy). The collection has been placed on disk and given to the Pacific
Grove Public Library reference desk, they can help you obtain copies
also. I must thank PGPL for their very great patience in allowing me to
hog the microfilm photocopier periodically in order to enlarge this
collection. The data base will be updated periodically and posted on
this newsgroup.
I must acknowledge and profusely thank Dolores "Dee" Litch for
contributing a massive number of these obituaries. She and Bill Hyler,
both long-time residents of Pacific Grove, started me on the PGHS
obituary project, and Dee gave me about 20 years of clippings to type
up. I am looking for more such long-time 'clippers' and newspaper
savers. Some obits were obtained from the California, Monterey County
mailing list, Roots.web and GenForum websites. I deeply appreciate the
many volunteers who look up obituaries and death certificate data out
of the sheer kindness of their hearts. I also wish to thank the
dedicated librarians at Pacific Grove Public Library who have helped me
many times, and take the time to daily update a wonderful index to
Monterey County Herald obituaries database on the PGPL website; it is
extremely helpful to those of us expatriots who cannot afford to buy a
house in Pacific Grove anymore.
I estimate that there are about 4,200 obituaries in this database as of
February 2006.
