1926 John Franklin "Frank" Work (84)
Monterey Peninsula Herald, CA Feb. 4, 1993
Frank Work, benefactor of Peninsula culture
By Margo Burke / Herald Staff Writer
Frank Work of Monterey, a generous and concerned contributor to the
cultural and civic life of the Peninsula, died Thursday at Community
Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. He was 84. In 1983, Mr. Work deeded
his home, the Castro-Work Adobe, and most of its contents to the
Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art. The three-acre estate and 25-room
home represent one of the most significant sites on the Peninsula. It
was his wish that the property would acquire a measure of accessibility
and become more incorporated into the life of the community. The estate
is now known as La Mirada. The adobe, constructed nearly 150 years ago
in the mid-1840s, was purchased in 1919 by Gouverneur Morris, author
and playwright, who lost the property after the stock market crash in
1929. It was purchased in 1937 by Thomas A. Work. Frank Work was the
last surviving son of Thomas A. Work, a pioneer banker and rancher. On
Learning of his death, Kate Dietterle, a member of the museum's board
of trustees, said, "Frank Work loved his community. He will be
missed. He left an enduring legacy for us all through his gift of La
Mirada to the Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art." Virginia Stanton, a
longtime friend, said she and her late husband, Bob Stanton, felt that
Frank was part of their family. "He was a great asset in this area,
generous and fun. We will miss him so much. He sparkled, he was
cheerful, he made us so happy." Mr. Work was born in Pacific Grove on
June 19, 1908. He was a graduate and valedictorian of Pacific Grove
High School. He graduated cum laude from Stanford University, where he
was a member of the Theta Xi fraternity. His many contributions to the
community included service on the Monterey Library Board, Larkin House
Advisory Board and the Monterey Conference Center Art Commission. In
1991, he was the recipient of the Monterey County Cultural Council
President's Award for exceptional support of community arts
endeavors. Known for his personal integrity, charm and wit, Mr. Work
was a gifted raconteur and bon-vivant. He was preceded in death by his
wife, Zizi Armstrong Work, and two brothers, Stuart Work and T.A. Work
Jr. Survivors are a sister, Elizabeth Kirby of Pebble Beach; two
nephews, Thomas A. Work III of San Diego and Robert Work of Pebble
Beach; and two nieces, Julie Work Beck of Corral de Tierra and Donna
Work Silverberg of Palo Alto. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m.
on Tuesday at St. Mary's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, in Pacific
Grove. The family suggests that any donations be sent to the La Mirada
Endowment fund of the Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art, 599 Pacific
