Wilfred Scholefield Sept. 3, 1920 - Oct. 9, 2017 Pebble Beach - Wilfred Scholefield, resident of the Monterey Peninsula since 1952, died peacefully on October 9, 2017. He was born in Yorkshire, Sheffield, England, on September 3, 1920, to Maggie and Ben Scholefield. In 1928, the family immigrated to Newark, New Jersey. At the onset of World War II, December of 1941, Wilfred joined the Army Air Corps. He trained and served as a weatherman until 1945. Following the war, he pursued his undergraduate studies and degree at Sul Ross University in Alpine, Texas. He went on to receive a graduate degree in Business from Columbia University, New York City in 1950. Moving to Pacific Grove in 1952, Wilfred began his career in Education as a Business and English teacher. He became an administrator at Pacific Grove High School, retiring in 1979. Wilfred was active in many organizations on the Peninsula: the Pacific Grove Rotary Club (President 1968); the Monterey County Grand Jury (1984 – 1986); Episcopal Homes Foundation Board (1989 – 1994); Pacheco Club (President 1991); Pacific Grove Masonic Order, Worshipful Master of Pacific Grove Lodge 331 (2000); and Monterey Peninsula Shrine Club (President 2009). He performed in numerous stage productions at the Golden Bough Theatre and the Studio Dinner Theatre in Carmel and he also enjoyed watercolor Plein Air painting. For many years, Wilfred supported music venues – the Bach Festival, The Monterey Symphony, Carmel Music Society and the San Francisco Opera. He also traveled the globe with his wife, Jean. Wilfred was a dedicated member of St. Mary's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Pacific Grove where people remarked on his beautiful baritone voice when he read the Scriptures. Wilfred Scholefield will be remembered by all who knew him as a clever, articulate, kind gentleman who possessed a love of life and love of family and friends. He could tell a good story like none other. It was grand to be in his circle of life. Wilfred is survived by Jean, his beloved wife of 44 years, who cared for him tirelessly in his final illness; son Ronald (Kit) of Maui, Hawaii; sister, Glenise Tyndall of Birmingham, Michigan; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in Texas, Michigan, England and Scotland. Much appreciation is extended to Dr. Richard King, Dr. Michael Galloway and Dr. Leland Rosenblum for their medical expertise and friendship; to Sharon Peet and Emma Williams for their daily care, patience and kindness; and for the support of the Hospice of the Central Coast, especially Amy Osterhout and Matt Walbeck, during his last months. Donations may be made in remembrance of Wilfred to St. Mary's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, 146 12th Street, Pacific Grove, CA 93950 or to the donor's favorite charity. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Mary's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Pacific Grove on Tuesday, October 24, 2:00 p.m.with a reception to follow. At a later time, his ashes will be interred in the St. Mary's Columbarium Memorial Garden.
