1942 Earl LeRoy "Topper" Arnett (63)
Monterey Peninsula Herald, CA Jan 18, 1986 p3
Earl Arnett, Former P.G. Recreation Director, Dies
Earl Arnett, Pacific Grove's first full-time recreation director, who
served 29 years until he retired in 1981, died Thursday in Oregon,
where he had been living for the past three years. He was 62. Mr.
Arnett, who was known as Topper, was recreation director in Pacific
Grove from September 1952 to July 1981 and was widely known in his
field. He was instrumental in getting a clubhouse built for senior
citizens and he set up programs to be run by the senior citizens
themselves. Mr. Arnett also was responsible for opening the Pacific
Grove Rec Club for youths and helped organize the Community center
Foundation, which built the Pacific Grove Community Center. He remained
in Pacific Grove for a time after his retirement before he and his
wife, Nikki, toured the Western states in their trailer, looking for a
house. They finally settled in the central Oregon town of Sisters,
where he lived until his death. He died in a hospital in nearby Bend,
Ore., after suffering a seizure. Mr. Arnett was born July 28, 1922, in
San Diego, and moved to Pacific Grove in 1939. He graduated from
Pacific Grove High School. During World War II he served in Europe with
the Army Air Corps. In 1946 he took a part-time job with the Pacific
Grove Recreation Department, running the Boys Club and the municipal
ball park while attending Hartnell College, then called Salinas Junior
College. Later Mr. Arnett graduated from Sacramento State University
and worked three years as Sacramento city recreation supervisor before
returning to Pacific Grove to become recreation director in 1952, when
the job became a full-time post. He was editor of the California Parks
and Recreation Magazine from 1963-1976 and was a member of the
California Board of Parks and Recreation for four years. Also, he was
president of the Parks and Recreation Department of the League of
California Cities in 1977 and served on the league board in 1978-79.
After his retirement, Mr. Arnett was honored by the California Parks
and Recreation Society, which gave him its highest award, the Citation
of merit, for his many years of service on the society's board. Mr.
Arnett stayed active while in Oregon, where he served as a president of
the Kiwanis Club in Sisters, headed the Sisters Food Bank, was chairman
of the Sisters Rodeo and was a member of the Black Butte Golf Club. In
addition, he served on the Regional Advisory Board for the Greater
Sisters District, which is advisory to the City Council and Planning
Commission. In one instance, when the state wanted to give up a park,
the advisory panel suggested that the city turn it into a municipal
park, which is what finally happened. John Miller, Mr. Arnett's
successor in Pacific Grove, said his former boss "never wanted to be
in the forefront. He always let people around him get the recognition.
He was happy when the recognition was given to his staff. He was more
of the quiet guy behind the scenes." Miller, who joined the
recreation staff in 1968 at the age of 15, said he wants to carry on
the work started by Mr. Arnett and James LeBeck, who ran the recreation
program on a part-time basis before Mr. Arnett. "I feel very
fortunate to be following in their footsteps," Miller said. Besides
his wife, mr. Arnett is survived by a son, Matthew of Carmel. At his
request, no services will be held. Following cremation, ashes will be
scattered.

Martha Rebecca (Calhoun) Westerlund Edwards
Contributed obituary from June Westerlund
On June 25, 2005, Martha Calhoun Edwards passed away in Provo, Utah. I
have recently married her son, Philip R. Westerlund and was blessed to
get to know Martha when she came to visit with us in Missouri this last
spring. I'll use some adjectives that I think would explain the
Martha I got to know: charming, delightful, inspiring, witty,
surprising, insightful, wise, joyful, and playful. She was born in
Monterey, California on April 15, 1925, to Byron and Retta Calhoun. She
loved her parents, and told me that they did not prepare her for the
real world, as her young life at home was ideal. Her parents treating
each other with love and respect and she expected the rest of the world
to do the same. She ran her own business for many years, and got to
travel extensively. Martha loved to dance and entertain. Her
personality helped people feel at ease. She hand made crocheted
blankets for each family member. On February 22, 1945 she married
Donald Dewitt Westerlund. Philip Ross Westerlund was born unto them on
August 22, 1947. They separated shortly after Philip's birth. Martha
moved home and worked for her mother in the Retta Calhoun Corset Shop.
She them went to work for the Bali Bra Company. Martha was soon the
first saleswoman for the company and traveled extensively. Two years
later, she bought the corset shop from her mother. On July 27, 1958,
Martha married John Edwards, an ABC News Correspondent. She moved to
Washington, D.C. and became a mother for the second time on January 12,
1961, to Melanie Edwards (Schmidt). Philip and his first wife,
Christine May Westerlund, gave her eight grandchildren. Listed in order
of appearance, Taryn, Kylie, Noah, Shauna, Courtney, Casey, Jordan and
Kera. Shauna and her husband Chris present her with her first
great-grandson last spring. With our marriage she inherited two more
grandchildren, Adrian and Rachel Stetson. Melanie lives in New York
with her husband. Thanks for memories, Martha. Respectively, Jane
Westerlund.
