Vernon W. Ask, a retired carpenter and a 55-year Peninsula resident,
died Wednesday at Community Hospital following a short illness. He was
71. Born Dec. 24, 1914, in Bellingham, Wash., he worked as a building
supervisor with various contractors before retiring in 1979. A Pacific
Grove resident, he was a member of Carpenter's Union Local 1323.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma; a daughter, Janis Beck of Monterey;
a son, Richard of Hamilton, Mont.; 10 grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren. Private cremation is planned at the Little Chapel
by-the-Sea, with the Paul Mortuary in charge of arrangements. The
family suggests memorial contributions to the donor's favorite
charity.

Cyril V. Church, 85, died April 5 at Hospice House of Monterey. He was
born April 24, 1916, in Coggon, Iowa, and lived in Pacific Grove for 72
years. He was a 1934 Pacific Grove High School Graduate, and worked as
a machinist on Liberty Ships for Hurley Marine during World War II.
After the war, he worked as a machinist for Carl Cherry in Carmel until
he started his own business as a commercial and residential painting
contractor. Mr. Church was also a commercial fisherman, and developed
and patented a structural blind rivet. He was a member of the Knights
of Columbus and the Monterey Peninsula Painting Contractor Association,
as well as St. Angela's Catholic Church, where he served as an usher.
He enjoyed beekeeping, hunting, fishing and specialized machining, tool
and die making. He was on call to all Monterey Peninsula Emergency
service providers when they had emergencies involving bees, wasps,
hornets and yellow jackets. Mr. Church is survived by three sons, John
P. Church of Carmel Valley, Patrick Joseph Church of Homer, Alaska, and
Louis George Church of Pacific Grove; three grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild. Mr. Church was preceded in death by his wife of 55
years, Anita Church; and two sons, Michael Willis Church and David
Church. Rosary and visitation will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at St.
Angela's Catholic Church. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday
at St. Angela's Church, followed by Memorial Mass at 10:30 a.m.
Tuesday at St. Angela's with burial to follow at Mission Memorial
Park.

1934 Richard M. Castanos (59)

Richard M. Castanos, 59, died unexpectedly of a stroke Oct. 22 at a
Camp Hill, Pa., hospital. A frequent visitor to the Monterey Peninsula,
Mr. Castanos was educated locally, graduating from Pacific Grove High
School in 1932. Born May 1, 1915, in Santa Paula, he was a resident of
Mechanicsburg, Pa. He is survived by his brother Everett R. Castanos of
Pacific Grove and several nieces and nephews who live locally. He is
also survived by his wife, Helen Castanos, and two sons and a daughter,
all of Pennsylvania. His sister was the late Frances Castanos Gansel,
formerly of Carmel Valley. Mr. Castanos was employed by the federal
government as a weapons analyst and was a veteran of World War II. A
Mass of Christian Burial has been celebrated, followed by final rites
and burial at Arlington National Cemetery.

1934 Albert Walton DeRome (83)

San Jose - Albert Walton DeRome, a former Pacific Grove resident,
died July 18 at his home in San Jose. He was 84. Born Sept. 27, 1914,
near San Francisco, he had fixed in Pacific Grove for many years, and
also lived in San Jose and San Francisco. Mr. DeRome worked on Cannery
Row during its heyday. He later sold real estate, owned a printing shop
and built shortwave radios. He enjoyed flying airplanes and sailing,
and loved learning about California art and history. Mr. DeRome is
survived by two cousins, Jack Gilbert of Danville and Felix Plant of
Richmond. Services will be held Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Little Chapel
by-the-Sea in Pacific Grove. Inurnment will be in El Carmelo Cemetery
in Pacific Grove. The Paul Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Fern Eades Grimshaw, a former longtime resident of the Monterey
Peninsula, died Tuesday in a Fresno hospital after a long illness. She
was 75. Mrs. Grimshaw was born in West Jordan, Utah, on Jan. 22, 1913.
She moved as a young child to the Monterey Peninsula, where she lived
before moving to Fresno a little more than a year ago. Mrs. Grimshaw, a
housewife who at one time was a part-time seamstress, had been a
longtime resident of Pacific Grove. She had been living at Seaside
before moving to Fresno. She is survived by a son, Charles of Keizer,
Ore.; a daughter, Terry Finney, of San Diego; six grandchildren, and
nine great-grandchildren. A graveside memorial service is to be
scheduled in Fresno at a later date.

Gladys Mae Henderson, a longtime Pacific Grove resident, died Monday at
Monterey Convalescent Hospital. She was 83. Born May 1, 1915, in Red
Oak, Iowa, she was educated in Pacific Grove and had lived in the city
for 71 years. Mrs. Henderson, a homemaker, is survived by a brother,
Earl Fritcher of Castroville; and a sister, Rosalie Pike of Pacific
Grove. Her husband, Malcolm, died in 1967. At her request, no services
will be held. Inurnment will be in El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove
under the direction of The Paul Mortuary. The family suggests that any
memorial contributions be sent to the Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box
1798, Monterey 93942.

Gladys Mae Fritcher Henderson, 83 ('33, d Oct 1998), a longtime PG
resident, died at Monterey Convalescent Hospital. A native of Red Oak,
IA, she lived in PG 71 years. She is survived by a brother, Earl
Fritcher of Castroville, and a sister, Rosalie Fritcher Pike of PG.

Myrtle H. Henderson. September 28, 1915 ~ January 17, 2006. MONTEREY -
Myrtle H. Henderson, age 90, died on Tuesday, January 17, 2006 in
Monterey. She was born in Rocky Ford, Colorado on September 28, 1915 to
Mary E. Byers and Charles M. Hall. At a very young age, she moved to
the Monterey Peninsula, where she grew up and graduated from Pacific
Grove High School. Ms. Henderson was the former owner of the Thrift
Food Store in Carmel and of Irene Dress Shop in Pacific Grove during
the 1950's. She also was a charter member of Lighthouse Keepers and a
member of the Pacific Grove High School Alumni Association. During her
pastime, Myrtle enjoyed gardening; she especially loved orchids. She
also enjoyed cruising, listening to Dixie Land Jazz, and playing
Bridge. Survivors include her sons, Jack Orchard (Joan) of Carmel, CA
and Neil Orchard (Rosalie) of Rancho Cordova, CA; sister, Charlotte
Danvers of Pacific Grove, CA; step-daughters, Sue Muniz of Pacific
Grove, CA and Kathy Hunter of San Carlos, CA; 9 grandchildren, 12
great-grandchildren, plus many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Vern Henderson, her second husband, Faye Roberts,
and her first husband, John Orchard. No services will be held.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of The Paul Mortuary.

Kenneth R. Laughton, 75, a longtime Pacific Grove resident and retired
railway postal worker, died Saturday at Community Hospital of the
Monterey Peninsula. Mr. Laughton was born Jan. 4, 1916, in Jackson. He
moved with his family to Pacific Grove in 1934. He served as a radioman
on B-24 bombers during World War II. He later worked on mail trains
between California and Chicago, retiring in 1972 when he returned to
Pacific Grove. Survivors include a sister, Lucile Loeper of Santa
Maria; two brothers, Gene Grant of Chico and Robert Grant of Mountain
View; and numerous nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Alexander Laughton
and Dudley Laughton, preceded him in death. Memorial services will be
held at a future date in Jackson. Cremation will be under the Paul
Mortuary. Inurnment will be in Pine Grove. The family suggests that any
memorial contributions go to Community Hospital of the Monterey
Peninsula.

Helen (Lewis) Coyle

Helen L. Coyle of Monterey died Monday at Ocean View Convalescent
Hospital. She was 81. Born July 24, 1916, in Yolo, she had been a
resident of Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove for 60 years, until moving
to Monterey two years ago. She graduated from Pacific Grove High School
in 1934. Mrs. Coyle owned a beauty shop on Forest Avenue in Pacific
Grove until the start of World War II, when she enlisted in the Marine
Corps. During the 1940s, she worked as a real estate saleswoman in the
Washington, D.C., area while her husband, Arthur, was stationed at the
Pentagon. While traveling with her husband during his military career,
Mrs. Coyle did volunteer work on the various Army bases where he
served. She continued her volunteer work with the Red Cross when she
returned to the Peninsula. Mrs. Coyle was a member of the Monterey
Peninsula Country Club. She is survived by her children, Michele and
Maurice Cotta of Pacific Grove and Sandra and Tim Kennedy of Carmel
Valley; a sister, Wilma Shinn of Vacaville; two grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren. At her request, no service will be held. Burial
will take place at El Carmelo Cemetery. The Paul Mortuary is in charge
of arrangements. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be

Helen Lewis Coyle, 81 (of PG, CA, d Jan 1998) was a lifetime resident
of Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove. Following graduation in 1934 she

1934 Eugene Arthur Philbrick (77)

Gene Philbrick, 76, died January 28, 1993 in a Templeton hospital. The
72-year resident of San Luis Obispo County owned and operated the
Highway News in Paso Robles from 1951 to 1977. Mr. Philbrick is
survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Philbrick of Paso Robles; son
Gary Philbrick of Paso Robles; grandson Ben Philbrick of Paso Robles;
sister and brother-in-law, Thelma and Willard Greenwald of Sunnyvale.
Services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at Plymouth Congregational
Church. Rev. Jim Damewood officiated. Chapel of the roses was in charge
of the arrangements.

Raymond W. Pixley, 72, a native of Pacific Grove, died last Thursday in
a Fairfield convalescent home following a lengthy illness. Mr. Pixley,
who made his home in Oroville for the past 30 years, was born Jan. 12,
1916 in Pacific Grove. He attended local schools and was a graduate of
Hartnell Community College and UCLA. He was employed for 35 years by
the California Employment Development Department, first in Monterey and
then Oroville. Mr. Pixley is survived by two sisters, Alice Thompson of
Seaside, and Marge Spurlin of Sacramento; and several nieces and
nephews. Graveside services were held Monday at the Monterey City
Cemetery.

Dora May Northam, 75, of Pacific Grove, a retired housekeeper, died of
cancer Thursday at the Hospice of the Central Coast. Mrs. Northam, a
native of Monterey, was born on Nov. 20, 1915. She was a resident of
Pacific Grove for 70 years and was employed by the Forest Hill Manor
retirement home in Pacific Grove for 20 years. She is survived by a
son, Robert of Reno, Nev.; two daughters, Barbara Anne Harris of
Pacific Grove and Kathleen Green of Eureka; nine grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren. At Mrs. Northam's request, no services will be
held. The Paul Mortuary is in charge of cremation arrangements at the
Little Chapel by-the-Sea. Inurnment will take place in Monterey City
Cemetery. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be sent

Anna Christine Wither, also known as "Ann," died Tuesday at her home.
She was 85. Mrs. Wither was born Dec. 9, 1916, in Cleveland and moved
to Pacific Grove in 1920. She was a member of the fifth generation of
the Salyer family to settle in Pacific Grove. She was a 1934 graduate
of Pacific Grove High School, attended Salinas Junior College and San
Jose State College. Mrs. Wither was an active member of Cypress
Community Church as well as the women's ministries and women's bible
study with the church and was involved in Cypress Church services at
Monterey Convalescent Hospital for 20 years. She was a member of the
Monterey Museum of Art, the Pacific Grove Museum and the Stuck Ups at
Asilomar. She enjoyed interior decorating. Mrs. Wither is survived by
two sons, William A. Crabbe of Sacramento and Gilbert L. Crabbe of
Santa Barbara; two daughters, Beverly A. Schmidt of Pacific Grove and
Anna Sue Bordofsky of Goleta; one brother, Charles G. Salyer of La
Pine, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Wither
was preceded in death by her first husband of 21 years, Bill Crabbe of
Pacific Grove; and her second husband of 28 years, John Wither of
Monterey. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today Funeral
service will take place at 11 a.m. Friday at Cypress Community Church,
with burial at 2 p.m. at El Carmelo Cemetery, Pacific Grove. Memorial

Anna Christine Wither, 85, of Pacific Grove died Tuesday, May 21, 2002,
at home. Born in Cleveland on Dec. 9, 1916, Wither was a fifth
generation member of the Salyer family that settled in Pacific Grove.
She graduated from Pacific Grove High School and attended Salinas
(Hartnell) Junior College and San Jose State University. A homemaker
whose hobby was interior decorating, Wither was a member of the Cypress
Community Church's women's ministries and bible study, and the church's
services at Monterey Convalescent Hospital for 20 years. She was a
member of the Monterey Museum of Art, the Pacific Grove Museum and the
Stuck Ups at Asilomar. She was preceded in death by her first husband
of 21 years, Bill Crabbe of Pacific Grove, and second husband of 28
years, John Wither of Monterey. Survivors: Sons, William A. Crabbe of
Sacramento and Gilbert L. Crabbe of Santa Barbara; daughters, Beverly
A. Schmidt of Pacific Grove and Anna Sue Mullins of Goleta; brother,
Charles G. Salyer of La Pine, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; and 14

1934 Marion Fremont "Fritz" Sprague (82)

Marion Fremont "Fritz" Sprague, a former resident of Pacific Grove,
died Dec. 14, 1997 in Inyokern, Kern County. He was 82. Born July 3,
1915, in Aurora, Nev., he had lived in Pacific Grove for 21 years. He
graduated from Pacific Grove High School in 1934. Mr. Sprague held a
variety of jobs on the Monterey Peninsula before serving in the Army
Air Forces during World War II. After the war, he worked as a teacher
then spent 15 years stringing utility lines throughout the western
United States. He and his wife later owned and operated a craft store
in Mesa, Ariz. He retired in 1987. Mr. Sprague was a member of the
Nature Conservancy of Arizona and the Cousteau Society. He is survived
by a son, Marion Sprague Jr. of Inyokern; a brother, Roy Sprague of
Cedar City, Utah; three sisters, Roberta Smith of Pacific Grove, Myrtle
Kirk of Ventura, and Joy Sylvester of Jamestown. His wife, Lois, died
in 1987. Services have been held. His ashes were scattered at sea. The
family suggests that any memorial contributions be sent to the
donor's favorite charity.

Marion Fremont "Fritz" Sprague, 82, ('34 in Inyokern, CA) died
Dec. 14, 1997 while visiting his son in InyoKern, Kern County, CA. A
native of Aurora, NV, a silver mining town, where after a mine accident
killed his father and forced the family to move to PG, where he was a
resident 21 years, attending grammar and high school. Mr. Sprague held
a variety of jobs on the Monterey Peninsula. A paperboy for the Herald
and the Pacific Grove at High Tide, he could repair most anything, and
after high school hours made deliveries for the PG Laundry as well as
passed his apprenticeship for mortician at Dorsey's Funeral Home. An
avid outdoors man, he once worked for Hopkins Marine Station on their
research vessel. He served in the Army Air Force in WWII, first in
Salinas, then the Eighth Air Force as a B-19 gunner over Germany. After
the war he worked as a teacher then worked for a utility company. He
and his wife later owned and operated a craft store in Mesa, AZ. He
retired in 1987, but still kept on collecting friends from all walks of
life. He is survived by a son, Marion Fremont Sprague Jr of Inyokern,
and two grandsons; a brother, Roy Carson Sprague '28 of Cedar City,
UT; three sisters, Roberta Sylvester Smith '45 of PG, Myrle Sprague
Kirk '36 of Ventura, CA, and Joy Sylvester '44 of Jamestown, CA.
His wife Lois died in 1987.

Chandler Stewart, an award-winning scientist and former resident of
Pacific Grove, died at his home in Alexandria, Va. On June 11, after a
brief illness. He was 72. Mr. Stewart was born in San Francisco on Feb.
1, 1916, and grew up in Pacific Grove. He and his family were well
known for their involvement in musical affairs. Between 1935 and 1940,
Mr. Stewart, his father, and two brothers opened the annual Carmel Bach
Festival each year with a trombone quartet performance. Mr. Stewart was
graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1939 with a
degree in electrical engineering. The eventually became a radio
engineer for the U.S. Navy at Mare Island, the U.S. Army Signal Corps
at the Presidio of San Francisco, and the Aircraft Radio Lab at Wright
Field, Ohio. Moving to Washington D.C., Mr. Stewart became an engineer
with the U.S. Navy Bureau of Aeronautics and the U.S. Army Mobility
Equipment Research and Development Center. During his career, he
invented and patented numerous methods of electrical measurement and
equipment for detecting land mines, metals, and intrusions. In 1966 he
received the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, the Army's second
highest award for civil service employees, for his invention of an
all-weather concealed intrusion detector. Mr. Stewart is survived by
his wife, Anna Lou; two sons, John of Washington, D.C. and Richard of
Annapolis, Md.; two daughters, Leslie Anne of Dallas, Texas and Carole
Jane of Accokeek, Md.; three brothers, Donald of Pioneer, Alan of Mount
Shasta, and Gordon of Los Altos; and three grandchildren. Services were
held in Virgina.

1934 James Allan Strang (68)

James Allan Strang, a resident of Pacific Grove for the past 60 years,
died Tuesday at his home after a long illness. He was 68. Born Nov. 22,
1915, in Prince Rupert, B.C., Canada, Mr. Strang moved to Pacific Grove
when he was eight years old and attended schools there. He was a
cartoonist I high school, and had several cartoons published in The
Herald. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a
deliveryman for Holman's Department store in Pacific Grove and worked
at the food concession at the Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Links. Mr.
Strang is survived by many cousins. No services will be held. Cremation
will be conducted at Little Chapel by-the-Sea under the direction of
the Paul Mortuary. Ashes will be scatted at sea.

Mary Alvina (Walter) Murray

Mary Murray, 86, died Monday in Fair Oaks. She was born April 18, 1916,
in Illinois. Mrs. Murray was a 20-year employee of the Pacific Grove
Unified School District. She enjoyed sewing, baking and volunteer work.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Russell; a daughter, Linda
Schuler of Fair Oaks; and one grandson. Funeral services will be held
at 1 p.m. Friday at the Nicoletti, Culjis & Herberger Funeral Home in
Sacrament. Private inurnment will take place at Mission Memorial Park
in Seaside. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be made
to the SPCA of Monterey County, P.O. Box 3058, Monterey 93942.
