Pauline Bruno Martino, 63, a longtime resident of Monterey, died
yesterday [July 24] at her son's home in Seaside. Mrs. Martino, a
native of Oakland, born on Feb 12, 1928, was a resident of Monterey for
63 years. Before her retirement, she was a fish butcher for the
Monterey Fish Co. for 30 years. She was a member of the Seaside Sewing
Club for many years and was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish and
the Italian Catholic Federation and a supporter of the Knights of
Columbus. Survivors include two sons, Thomas of Seaside and Paul of
Monterey; a daughter, Dorothy Bruno-Billante of Salinas; two brothers,
Lars Andrews of Walnut Creek and Heber Andrews of Tacoma, Wash.; five
grandchildren and a great-grandson. Visitation will be held today from
9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and tomorrow from noon to 5 p.m. at the Monterey
Peninsula Mortuary. The rosary will be recited tomorrow at 7 p.m. at
St. Francis Xavier Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated at the church at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by burial in
Mission Memorial Park.

Alexander Raymond Bettencourt, a former resident of Pacific Grove, died
Sunday [May 27] of cancer at his home in Placerville. He was 64. He was
a retired machinist and welder who also managed apartment complexes.
Born in Manteca on May 7, 1926, he lived in Pacific Grove from 1932 to
1971. Mr. Bettencourt was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the
Pacific Grove Alumni Association and the Swansboro Volunteer Fire
Department. He served as president of the Monterey County Archery
Association and the Mission Trails Archery Association. He was a
founder of Father Kerk's Council in Pacific Grove. Mr. Bettencourt
attended Pacific Grove High School. During World War II he served in
the navy on the US West Virginia in the South Seas. He is survived by
his wife, Betty Jo; two sons, Raymond Craig of Santa Cruz and Barry Lee
of Pacific Grove; a daughter, Sheree Rene Bettencourt of Capitola; a
brother, William Gerald of Los Banos; his mother, Marie Bentley of
Pacific Grove; five stepbrothers, George and Manuel, both of Modesto,
John of Stockton, Norman of Oregon and Frank of Sacramento; and
numerous nieces and nephews. A Rosary Vigil service will be held
Thursday at 7 p.m. at St. Angel's Catholic Church in Pacific Grove. A
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at the
church. Internment will follow in Mission Memorial Park in Seaside. The
family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the Kaiser Hospice,

in Fresno. He was born Nov 6, 1927, in Salinas, and lived on the

Mr. Brown is survived by a daughter, Arlene Vwdla of Carmel; two

CELIA O. CAMPBELL Celia passed away on November 14, 2004. She was born
on January 29, 1928, in San Francisco to Martin and Mary Campbell of
Scotland. She grew up in Alameda and Pacific Grove. She was a 53-year
resident of San Leandro. Celia retired from Alameda County Health
Services after 23 years of service. Celia will be sadly missed by her
children, Jan Hohenstein and husband, Bob, of Anaheim, Joanne Attinello
and husband, Sal, of San Leandro, and Larry Bordenave and wife,
Maureen, of Woodland. She is also survived by her beloved
grandchildren, Jill Attinello Baldwin, Michael Attinello, Heather and
Scott Hohenstein, Kristen and Katie Bordenave, her precious
great-granddaughter, Megan Baldwin, her dear sister, Joan Kramer of
Ashland, Oregon, her devoted cousin, Jean Falkowski of Pleasanton, and
her former husband and best friend, Jerry Bordenave. Celia will be
remembered fondly by her many friends and neighbors. At her request, no

Gene Collins, a resident of Pacific Grove for more than 40 years, died
Monday at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital shortly after being stricken
at work. He was 56. He was born in Vermillion, S.D., on June 21, 1928.
Mr. Collins attended Pacific Grove High School. He worked as a linoleum
installer on the Peninsula for 40 years, and was last employed at
Cinderella Carpets in Salinas. He is survived by wife, Dorothy of
Pacific Grove, two daughters, Colleen Robbin of Seaside and Cathy
Cranfield of Del Rey Oaks, two sons, Ken of Grants, N.M., and Kevin of
Pacific Grove, two sisters, Elaine Santos of Port Angeles, Wash., and
Beverly Irish of Peeksville, N.Y.; two brothers, Sonny, of Sunnyvale
and Richard of Sioux City, Iowa; as well as three granddaughters.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Paul Mortuary Chapel.

Betty Jo Bettencourt, a former resident of Monterey County, died
Thursday [April 15] of cancer at her son's home in Seaside. She was
70. Born Feb. 20, 1929, in Pacific Grove, she lived in Monterey County
for 40 years. She and her husband settled in Placerville 15 years ago.
A 1946 graduate of Pacific Grove High School, she was active in the
school's Alumni Association and was a member of Beta Sigma Phi
sorority, the local chapter of Catholic Daughters of America and the
Star Program in Placerville, a group of volunteers who worked with the
El Dorado County Sheriff's Department. She is survived by two sons,
Craig and Barry Bettencourt, both of Seaside; a daughter, Sheree
Bettencourt of Soquel; a sister, Lillian Enos of Soquel; and her
mother, Mary Silva of Seaside. Her husband, Alexander, died in 1990.
Visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at The Paul
Mortuary. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday at St. Angela's
Catholic Church. Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St.
Angela's, with burial to follow at Mission Memorial Park. In lieu of

in other organizations. She is survived by two sons, Craig Bettencourt
'65 and Barry Bettencourt '68, both of Seaside; a daughter, Sheree

of Vi's Place, a restaurant, in San Mateo. Surviving are her husband,

Monterey peninsula. Mr. Hommell was born April 14, 1928, in Pacific
Grove, where he lived his entire life. He was a graduate of Pacific
Grove High School. After high school he served two years in the Navy.
Mr. Hommell was a former employee of Holman's Department Store's
furniture department and a self-employed part-time gardener. He was a
member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He is survived by a brother,
Arthur of Pacific Grove. No services are planned. Private burial will

Lorraine (McAnaney) Chamberlain - born in Carmel on 2/14/29 and
passed away in Citrus Heights on 1/5/99. Lorraine was a
fifth-generation Carmelite and daughter of the late Florence and Ernest
McAnaney. Her father was Chief of Police of Pacific Grove during the
40's, 50's and 60's. After graduation from Pacific Grove High
School in 1946, she attended beauty college in San Jose. Upon returning
to Pacific Grove, she was one of the first students to attend Monterey
Junior College, now MPC. She married Chuck Chamberlain LTC USA RT in
1948 and spent the next 20 years living throughout the world. They
recently celebrated their 50th anniversary in Hawaii. Lorraine is
survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Christy and Bart Jones of
Citrus Heights. For 20 years she was partners with Christy and Chuck in
the Ms. Muffet gift shop in Fair Oaks and divided her time between
there and her home in Carmel Valley. She lost her son Jeff Chamberlain
to cancer seven years ago, but is survived by daughter-in-law, Rose and
grandson, Charlie of Salem, Oregon. Her in-laws, John and Louise
Orchard reside in Auburn, as do her brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth
and Lori Chamberlain. She also leaves brother-in-law, Jack Orchard and
his wife Joan of Carmel and Neil Orchard and his wife Rosalie of Rancho
Cordova. A niece, Cathy Lee of Carmel, was like a daughter to Lorraine.
A celebration of life memorial will be held at her nephew Billy Quon
Lee's restaurant located in the Ryan Ranch on the Monterey-Salinas
Hwy at 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 30th Interment will be at the Pacific Grove
Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Mercy San Juan Hospice,
Carmichael, CA or Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.

Lorraine McAnaney Chamberlain, '46, a fifth generation native of
Carmel, died in Citrus Heights in January 1999. Her late father, Ernie,
was a longtime chief of police in PG and formed the Ocean Rescue Team,
still active. After attending beauty college in San Jose, she enrolled
as one of the first students to attend Monterey Junior College, now
MPC. She is survived by her husband, Chuck '47, and recently
celebrated her 50th anniversary in Hawaii. Surviving in-laws include
John '31 and Louise Orchard of Auburn, and brother and sister-in-law,
Jack and Joan Orchard of Carmel, Neil and Rosalie Orchard of Ranco
Cordova, and Cathy Lee of Carmel. Interment was in El Carmelo Cemetery,

Frederick Neunzig, owner and director of Salinas Clinical laboratories,
died Wednesday in the Pacific Presbyterian Medical Center in San
Francisco, following a lengthy illness. He was 60. Mr. Neunzig was born
May 27, 1938, in Pacific Grove and lived in Salinas for the past 23
years. He was a captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve, and a member of
Salinas Masonic Lodge 204, the San Jose Scottish Rite Bodies, the Islam
Shrine of San Francisco, Salinas Elks Lodge 614, and the Monterey
County Sheriff's Aero Squadron. Her was also a member and past
president of the Salinas Host Lions Club, a former member of the
Salinas Airport Commission and a member of the American Association of
Bio-Analysis. Mr. Neunzig is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth
DeBerdt of Salinas; three sons, F. Bruce Neunzig of Salinas, Bradley
Neunzig of Sacramento and Brian Neunzig of Pensacola, Fla.; two
brothers, Edward of Seaside and William of San Jose; and one grandson.
Visitation is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. today in the Struve and
Laporte Funeral Chapel. Funeral services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
Saturday. Private burial will follow in the Monterey City Cemetery. The
family suggests that any memorial contributions be made to the

John Phillip Nuttall, 64, of Salinas, a retired gardener, died of
cancer yesterday at Natividad Medical Center. Mr. Nuttall, a native of
Nogales, Ariz., was born Sept. 30, 1926. He grew up in Pacific Grove,
attending Pacific Grove schools. During his school years, he worked for
a time delivering papers for The Herald throughout the Pacific Grove
area. Mr. Nuttall was employed as a gardener in Pacific Grove and
Monterey for many years before his retirement in 1989. He was a member
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salinas.
Survivors include a daughter, Letha Ann Berry of Tooele, Utah; a
stepson, Clifford Cloward of Magna, Utah; a brother, Paul of Mansfield
Center, Conn.; a sister, Pearl Brown of San Jose; two grandchildren;
four stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and
nephews. Friends may pay their respects at The Paul Mortuary tomorrow
from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Graveside services with full military honors will
be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Mission Memorial Park in Seaside. The

Melvin Phillips - loving husband, father and grandfather passed away
on March7, 1996 in Knights Valley. Born in Pacific Grove on July 20,
1928. After graduation, he went to work for Bing Lin Stock Farm out of
Moor Park raising race horses. He married his loving wife Velta in 1948
and moved to Ukiah in 1949. His mom and dad had a small farm in Redwood
Valley where he helped his parents and also worked at the plywood mill
until the late 50's when the mill shut down. He then went to work on
the Ridgewood Ranch until 1961 when it sold. He then went to work for
Buck Mountain Cattle Company of Covelo. In 1973 he moved to Knights
Valley to be closer to his family. In 1990 he retired but still worked
part-time for various people in the Valley. He is survived by his
loving wife, Velta of 48 years and four children, Donna CHECK HERE FOR
MISSING DATA and her husband Tom Ingram of Ukiah; Nancy and her husband
Mike Sunseri also of Ukiah; son Richard and his wife Denise of Knights
Valley, grandchildren: Danny, Helen, Harry Jr., Curtis, Kathleen,
Megan, and Andy; sister Janet and her husband Gilbert Campbell of
Petaluma and numerous nieces and nephews and loving friends. He always
made time to fish, hunt and camp with the family. He always said "If
I had it to do all over again, I wouldn't change a thing. I worked
hard and enjoyed every day." Friends are invited to attend Funeral

of Bend died Wednesday. He was 73. A memorial service will be held at

Rucker was born Nov. 23, 1928, in Oakland, Calif. He married Beverly
Carpenter on Sept. 3, 1966, in Reno, Nev. He was a commercial fisherman
and rancher before purchasing T & D Marketing Company Inc. in Bend. Mr.
Rucker was affiliated with the Juniper Golf Club and BPOE Elks Lodge
#1371 in Bend. He enjoyed golfing and watching sports on television.
Mr. Rucker moved to Bend in 1970. Survivors include his wife of Bend;

Everett Rucker ('46, of Bend, OR) died Nov 13, 2002 in Bend, OR of
complications of leukemia. He leaves his wife, Beverly and a large host
of friends.

Jean M. Pellegrini, 65, of Salinas, a homemaker, died Thursday at the
Casa Serena Health Care Center in Salinas. Mrs. Pellegrini was born in
Pacific Grove on July 29, 1928, and was a 1946 graduate of Pacific
Grove High School. She moved from Pacific Grove to Salinas in 1979.
Survivors include a son, Bill Lee of Monterey; a daughter, Cathy Lee of
Carmel; a brother, Robert Vining of Pacific Grove; a sister, Shirley
Hudson of Fresno; and one grandchild. No funeral services will be held.
At her request, her remains will be donated to the University of
California at San Francisco Medical Center for medical research. The
Whiteurst/Muller Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.
