Kazukatsu Sugano, 48, apparently choked to death yesterday morning on a capsule he was taking for an allergy, according to coroner Christopher H. Hill Jr. A first aid squad of the Seaside Fire Department was summoned at 9:11 a.m. to the Sugano home, 1925 Grandview Ave., when he suffered a choking spell. Resuscitation was applied and he was transported to the Monterey Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival at 9:30 a.m. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death. Mr. Sugano was a native of Pacific Grove, where he was born Feb. 14, 1915. He attended elementary and high schools in Pg and Hartnell College. For the past 2 ½ years he has been bookkeeper for the Wilder  Jones Co. of Carmel. Mr. Sugano was a veteran of World War II, during which he earned the European-African-Middle East combat ribbon; the Good Conduct medal; Victory ribbon; and District Unit badge with oak leaf cluster. He was 12th district chaplain of the Nisei Memorial Post 1629, VFW of Monterey, a member of the “Cooties” honorary society; active in the Japanese-American Citizens League and El Estero Presbyterian Church of Monterey; and a member of the California National Guard Reserve. Surviving are: his wife, Kiyoko, two sons, Reginald and Brian Sugano, and a daughter, Paulette Sugano, all of Seaside. Funeral services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in El Estero Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Henry S. Shimozono officiating. Burial services will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday in Mission Memorial Park with full military honors. The Dorney & Farlinger Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
