Pacific Grove Tribune, CA July 19, 1996
P.G. Golf Pro Dies
The unexpected death this week of Don Fry, Pacific Grove golf pro since
January 1, 1963 has come as a shock to members of the community. The
friendly and genial member of the golfing Fry family was well known to
local residents and visitors alike. His death at the age of 41 leaves a
vacancy in golfing circles as well as in the close-knit Fry family.
Mayor Earl "Don" Grafton of Pacific Grove said: "Don's death is
a terrific shock. I've known him for a number of years and found him
to be a congenial and dedicated person. I have also known his family
well and his death is a loss to the community as well as to him (sic)
family and friends.'" James Lebeck, member of the Recreation
Commission and golf coach and instructor at Pacific Grove High School
said "Aside from our personal loss as a friend, this is a great loss
to Pacific Grove. As far as golf is concerned. He belonged to a great
family of golfers. He always helped the golf team at school and helped
a lot of boys develop into golfers, both from school and locally. He
will be missed." Donald Joseph Fry was born in Oakland, the son of
Fred and Helen Fry, on September 19, 1925. He came to Pacific Grove
when he was seven years old and attended Pacific Grove schools, serving
as student body president at Pacific Grove High School and later as
president of the Alumni Association. During World War II, he served in
the U.S. Marine Corps and then became golf pro at West Side Golf Club
in Dos Palos from Feb. 1, 1951 until Feb 1, 1952. He next served as
golf pro at San Beniot Country Club in Hollister. In 1952, Don was at

1943 Elizabeth May "Bonnie" Gartshore (75)
The San Jose Newspaper Guild
http://www.sjguild.org/montnw12.htm
Monterey activist Bonnie Gartshore, 75
Longtime Guild member and union activist Bonnie Gartshore, a writer and
editor for The Monterey County Herald for more than 50 years, died from
the complications of cancer June 20, just 11 days after 400 people
crowded into a historic place in downtown Monterey to celebrate her
contributions to her community. Two famous cartoonists who live in
Monterey (Gus Arriola of "Gordo" Ms. Gartshore, 75, sat smiling and
laughing through three hours of greetings and tributes as she was feted
as a community treasure. She got blessings from her favorite Catholic
priest, original cartoons from fame and Eldon Dedini from Playboy and
the Saturday Evening Post), concerts from three bands who insisted on
playing for her, an original poem from Big Sur-clad Ric Masten,
readings of her own poetry from Herald columnist Sharon Randall and a
declaration from the Monterey mayor, who proclaimed her as valuable to
Monterey as the famous bay and the sea otters. The mayors of both
Monterey, her birthplace, and adjoining Pacific Grove, her later home,
declared that June 9 to be "Bonnie Gartshore Day" in their cities. The
county's board of supervisors dubbed her as the official "historian in
residence." The state Legislature feted her as "'an exemplary citizen
of California." And her congressman acknowledged her as a community
treasure in the Congressional Record. For her part, Ms. Gartshore said
she wasn't sure what makes a community treasure, but she was glad she
was one because it allowed her to see everyone from her entire life in
one place at one time. And she thanked God that she had the good
fortune of having been born in Monterey. The community tribute --
fitting for a local journalist, poet and longtime activist whose causes
ranged from feminizing the Catholic church to organizing farm workers,
teaching convicts to write and banning nuclear weapons -- was conceived
four months earlier at a Guild party. Members of the Monterey unit were
celebrating a severance-pay victory over Knight Ridder, which took over
The Herald in 1997 with brutal tactics that canceled the existing union
contracts, when Russ Cain suggested there should be a separate party
for Bonnie. Former unit chair June Cornea stepped up to head a
committee, recruited a diverse group of power brokers and poets in the
area and the rest, as they say, became history. Besides a community
full of friends, Ms. Gartshore is survived by three nephews and a
niece. They have suggested that any memorial gifts be sent to the
scholarship fund formed by the committee, The Bonnie Gartshore Fund,
c/o The Carl Cherry Foundation, P.O. Box 863, Carmel, CA 93921, or to
the book-buying fund set up the by the Monterey Public Library, the

City of Monterey's 'Bonnie Day'
By Thom Akeman
Bonnie Gartshore, who started her newspaper career at The Monterey
County Herald 51 years ago, has become the historian-in-residence for
Monterey, a source of research and eyewitness accounts that trace the
settlement of the West. Her value to her community was celebrated in a
gathering in a historic park in downtown Monterey, when the city
declared June 9 to be "Bonnie Gartshore Day in Monterey." Around 400
people turned out, including city officials, and cartoonist Gus Arriola
created a cartoon (below) for the occasion. The fete, known more simply
as "Bonnie Day," was conceived over the winter when members of the
Guild's Monterey unit celebrated a severance-pay victory over Knight
Ridder, which took over The Herald in 1997 with brutal tactics that
canceled existing union contracts. At the party, Russ Cain suggested
there should be a separate, communitywide tribute for Bonnie, who is 75
and battling cancer. Former RA member June Cornea stepped up to head a
committee, recruited a diverse group of power brokers and poets in the
area and the rest, as they say, is history. The party ran from 2 to
4:30 p.m. June 9 in the Memory Garden of the state-owned Custom House
Plaza. Free and open to the public, the celebration featured story
telling, poetry reading, videos, cake and wine and tributes to Bonnie
from Congress, the state Legislature, Monterey County and the cities of
Monterey and Pacific Grove. In addition to the party, the committee
formed a scholarship fund to present annual awards in Bonnie's name to
help promote Monterey County history and arts. Contributions can be
mailed to The Bonnie Gartshore Fund, c/o The Carl Cherry Foundation,
P.O. Box 863, Carmel, CA 93921. Bonnie, fresh out of San Jose State
College, started her career in 1950 in the society section, where most
of the newspaperwomen were at the time. She's maintained her connection
to The Herald ever since, through long years of union involvement,
religious devotion, peace promotion, political activities, feminism,
teaching, historical writing and poetry. She has written two books of
poetry -- "Trying to Put it Together: and "Taking My Cue from the
Walrus" -- that recall her childhood near the teeming sardine factories
of the Depression-era Monterey, report on some of the people she has
encountered over the years and reveal her insights. The Monterey
History and Art Association published a collection of her "Looking
Back" columns as a book titled "Footprints from the Past." Despite
cancer and exhaustive treatments, Bonnie keeps showing up for work each
day as scheduled. "I don't want to be defined by my illness," she
explained to a recent interviewer.
Knockout II Aug 2001
Bonnie Gartshore, 75, a Monterey native who spent more than 50 years as
a writer and editor for the Herald died of cancer at Community

journalism from San Jose State College she joined the Herald. She
became a knowledgeable specialist in local history. She published a
number of books and poetry. She developed a writers workshop at Soledad
Prison. Then she was hired by Hartnell College to work helping inmates
with English and speech. In earlier days she marched and picketed with
the United Farm Workers, civil rights and peace workers, and was a
member of Friends of the Pacific Grove Library, a Board Member of
PGHSAA, the Carl Cherry Foundation, the Robert Louis Stevenson Club and
in 1989 the Quota Club of the Monterey -Pacific Grove named her Woman
