Carolyn G. Embrey, 85, of Pacific Grove, a homemaker and retired
elementary school teacher, died Friday at Community Hospital of the
Monterey Peninsula. Mrs. Embrey was born in San Jose on May 30, 1908.
She was a graduate of San Jose State College, now California State
University at San Jose. She had been a resident for 70 years of Pacific
Grove, where she taught school before retiring. She is survived by her
husband, James, and a daughter, Clarice, of Pacific Grove. At her
request, no services will be held. Following cremation, her ashes will
be scattered at sea. The Paul Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Esther Mabel Hasselo, a homemaker and lifetime Peninsula resident, died
on Monday at Monterey Convalescent Hospital. She was 81. A native of
Pacific Grove, Mrs. Hasselo was born on Sept. 27, 1909. Serving in
leadership positions in many civic organizations, she was active in the
Monterey History and Art Association, the Monterey Civic Club, the
Symphony guild and the American Red Cross. Mrs. Hasselo was a member of
St. Mary's by-the-Sea in Pacific Grove and the Tau Muu sorority. She
is survived by two daughters, Pamela Lincoln of Hingham, Mass., and
Diane Carvey of Gaithersburg, Md.; and one granddaughter. Her husband,
Norman, a vice president of Bank of American, died in 1978. At her
request, no services will be held. Cremation will take place at the
Little Chapel by-the-Sea in Pacific Grove under the direction of the
Paul Mortuary. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be
sent to the American Cancer Society, 344 Salinas St., Suite 108,
Salinas 93901, or to the donor's favorite charity.

Lucille Mildred (Laughton) Bambauer Loeper

Lucille Bambauer Loeper, 91, a homemaker, a businesswoman and a
community volunteer, died Tuesday at her home. She was born Sept. 1,
1909, in Jackson. A third-generation Californian, she attended Monterey
High School and helped care for her five younger brothers while her
mother worked in the canneries. She earned a bachelor's degree in
education from San Jose State College. She married her high school
sweetheart, Ferdinand Bambauer, in 1928, and later they opened
Peninsula Auto Parts in Monterey with her brother, Dudley Laughton, and
a friend, Roland Imwalle. Widowed at the end of World War II, she met
and married William Loeper. His career took them to Washington and
Oregon before they settled in Santa Maria and purchased the Ford Motor
dealership in 1960. Mrs. Loeper was active in numerous charitable
organizations, including the P.E.O. Sisterhood, the Minerva Club and
Meals on Wheels. She was a charter member of the Monterey Bay Aquarium,
which occupies the Hovden Cannerey, where her mother once worked to
support the family. She enjoyed golfing, traveling, playing bridge,
gardening and cooking. Mrs. Loeper loved the outdoors, especially
camping and hunting in Big Sur and Mount Shasta. She loved walking on
Asilomar Beach with her friends, her family and her springer spaniel,
Gypsy. She is survived by a daughter, Joan Carbaugh of Pacific Grove;
two brothers, Eugene Grant of Chico and Robert Grant of Mountain View;
two granddaughters, six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and
nephews. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the
Little Chapel by-the-Sea in Pacific Grove. Inurnment will follow in El
Carmelo Cemetery. The family suggests that any Memorial contributions
be sent to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula Foundation,
P.O. Box HH, Monterey 93942, or to the P.E.O. Sisterhood, 3700 Grand
Ave., Des Moines, Iowa 50312.

Lucille Laughton Bambauer Loeper, 91, a homemaker, businesswoman and a
community volunteer, died at home July 3, 2001. A native of Jackson, CA
and a third generation Californian she helped take care of her five
younger brothers while her mother worked at Hovden's and other
canneries. She earned a BA from San Jose State College and then married
her high school sweetheart, Ferdinand Bambauer, '27 in 1928. They
opened the Peninsula Auto Parts in Monterey with her brother, Dudley
Laughton '31 and a friend, Roland Imwalle. She is survived by a
daughter, Joan Bambauer Carbaugh '51 of Pacific Grove; two brothers,
Eugene Grant '42 of Chico and Robert Grant of Mountain View.

Avis Jana MacKarcher, 80, of Pacific Grove, a retired teacher, died
Tuesday at Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula. Born in Spokane,
Wash., on Sept. 27, 1910, Miss MacKarcher lived in Pacific Grove for 65
years and taught remedial classes for the Pacific Grove Unified School
District for 40 years. She was a graduate of San Jose State University.
Miss MacKarcher was a member of the California Teachers Association,
The California Retired Teachers Association and the American
Association of University Women. She was also a member of Mayflower
Church in Pacific Grove. She is survived by several cousins, including
Jean Freeman of Salinas. At her request, no services will be held. The
Paul Mortuary is in charge of cremation arrangements. Inurnment will
take place at El Carmelo Cemetery. The family suggests that any
memorial contributions be sent to Planned Parenthood, 5 Via Joaquin,
Monterey 93940.

1927 Dale C. Mauzey Sr. (82)

Dale C. Mauzey Sr. of Salinas, a retired warehouse foreman, died
Wednesday at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital at the age of 82. Born
Jan 20, 1908, in Coos Bay, Ore., he had lived in Salinas for 17 years.
Before that he lived in Monterey for 53 years and worked for Del Monte
Canning Corp. Mr. Mauzey is survived by hs wife, Alice; a daughter,
Patricia Smith of Pleasanton; two sons, James of Santa Cruz and Dale
Jr. of Salinas; a twin sister, Alice Melder of Monterey; a brother,
Howard of Campbell; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and
several nephews and niece. Memorial services will be held Saturday at
10:30 a.m. at the Healey Mortuary Chapel. Private cremation will take
place under the direction of the mortuary, and his ashes will be
scattered at sea. The family suggests that any memorial contributions
be sent to the Salinas memorial Hospital Foundation, 420B E. Romie
lane, Salinas.

1927 Reginald T. Tumbleson (75)

Reginald T. Tumbleson, a resident of Salinas, died Sunday at Salinas
Valley Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was 75. He was born
in Pacific Grove and was a graduate of Pacific Grove High School. Mr.
Tumbleson was an employee of the Pacific Telephone Co. in the
Salinas-Monterey and San Luis Obispo areas. He retired in 1973 after 45
years of service. He was an avid ham radio operator for many years and
was a member of the Pioneer Club. He is survived by a sister, Marcella
Bishop of Carmel, and a brother, William Tumbleson of Seaside. At his
request, no funeral services were held. Entombment was in the Garden of
Memories, under the direction of the Struve & Laporte Funeral Chapel.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer
Society.

Walter Washburn of Fresno. Grandmother of Debbie Lokka of Sonoma, Tom
Johnson and Ileen Johnson, both of Fresno. Funeral services Friday,

Alice Williams Small, a former Carmel Valley resident, died Oct. 20 in
Portland, Ore. She was 90. She was born in Pacific Grove on June 2,
1909. She was a 1927 graduate of Pacific Grove High School and a 1931
graduate of San Jose State College. She taught grade school for three
years before she married Joseph Small in 1934 and moved to Los Angeles.
They retired in 1969 and relocated to Carmel Valley. After her husband
died, Mrs. Small moved to Portland in 1987. She was a lifelong
Methodist. Mrs. Small was active in the Carmel Valley Model A car Club
and the MG Club of Pebble Beach. She is survived by a daughter, Suzanne
Knapp of Portland; a son, Joseph Small III of Boston; and six
grandchildren. Inurnment services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 10 in
El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove. The Paul Mortuary will be in
charge of arrangements. The family suggests that any memorial
contributions be sent to the Senior Citizens Council of Clackamas
County, P.O. Box 5177, Oregon City, Ore. 97045.

Alice Williams Small, 90 ('27, d Oct 1999), born in PG in 1909 and a
former Carmel Valley resident, died in Portland, OR. After graduation
in 1931 from San Jose State College she taught grade school for three
years. She married Joseph Small and they moved to Los Angeles. Retiring
in 1969 they relocated to Carmel Valley. After her husband died, Mrs.
Small moved to Portland. She is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Knapp
of Portland; a son, Joseph Small III of Boston; and six grandchildren.

Kenneth "Kenny" E. Zug, 91, a former Pacific Grove city councilman,
died Thursday at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. He was
born May 18, 1910, in Alhambra and lived in Monterey County for 75
years. A 1928 graduate of Pacific Grove High School, Mr. Zug lived in
that city for many years and served on the Pacific Grove City Council
and the Pacific Grove School Board. He was a self-employed butcher for
65 years. His memberships included the Rotary Club of Pacific Grove and
the Elks Club of Monterey. He is survived by a daughter, Joan Zug of
Marina; one grandson; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in
death by his wife, Velma, and a son, Kenneth Douglas Zug. At his
request there will be no services. Cremation will be under the
direction of the Paul Mortuary, and his ashes will be scattered at sea
off Point Lobos.
