she attended school. On June 19, 1971, she married Stanley Nelson in
San Jose, Calif. While living in Gilroy, Calif., she served on the city
council. Sara had been a resident of Coos Bay for the past 10 years.

Morgan Hill Times, CA April 23, 2004
Sara Nelson, who served on Gilroy's City Council from 1987-91, died
at her Coos Bay, Oregon, home Monday morning. She was 61. Nelson
campaigned successfully against creating a redevelopment agency in the
city of Gilroy and was an outspoken member of the City Council. Born in
Long Beach, Nelson grew up in Pacific Grove. She lived in San Francisco
and San Jose before moving to Gilroy with her husband, Stan, in 1984.
They lived in the city for about 10 years before moving to Oregon.
"She was the only Christian conservative on the council," Stan
Nelson said. "She took a stand in the things she believed in. She
studied issues thoroughly and had her mind made up about them."
Longtime friend Ben Gilmore remembers her as an informed member of the
city council. "I was very impressed with her speed reading skills,"
he said. "She would read through the thick agenda before each city
council meeting. She knew what she was talking about." Though her
political views were not always the most popular, she is remembered
fondly for having the courage of her convictions. "She offered
another side of things that most people would not have seen," said
County Supervisor Don Gage, who was mayor at the time. "I had a lot
of respect for her. I didn't always agree with her on issues, but I
agreed with her enthusiasm and her tenacity." For about nine years
after moving to Oregon, Nelson struggled with circulation problems in
her leg that necessitated a series of major pioneering vascular
surgery. She died away at Baycrest Village, a nursing center in Oregon.
In addition to her participation in the city council, Nelson was also a
secretary with a used-auto dealership, a manager of a rental unit and a
housewife. "You know it's going to happen, but you're still
surprised when it does," said Stan Nelson. In addition to her
husband, she is survived by sons, Stefan, 45, who lives in Monterey;
Mark, 44, and Daniel, 42, both of whom live in Hood River, Oregon; and
Sean, 29, who is currently a civilian contractor in Iraq. Services will
be held 1 p.m., Saturday, April 24, at Hope Covenant Reform Church, 580
E. 9th St. , Coquille, Oregon.

G. Thomas Hazleton; recording artist and concert organist, 63
By Elizabeth Fitzsimons / STAFF WRITER
Concert and theater organist G. Thomas Hazleton was all of five years
old when he gave his first performance. The boy had been listening to
his kindergarten teacher play the piano for her students when he
stopped her. "Teacher, you're playing it wrong," he said. "Well then,
you come play it," the teacher said. And so he did. Amazed, she urged
the child's mother to start him in lessons. "He was definitely a child
prodigy," said Mimi Hazleton, Mr. Hazleton's wife of 31 years. "The
organ took up his whole life." A world-famous organist and recording
artist, Mr. Hazleton earned a reputation as a master of improvisation
and versatility, one of the few concert organists who felt at home with
both classical and theater organs. Mr. Hazleton had performed in
Phoenix the weekend before he died from a heart attack at his Oceanside
home March 14. He was 63. During his career, Mr. Hazleton's hands
touched the keys of the most famous organs, including those at Grace
Cathedral in San Francisco, the Wanamaker store in Philadelphia,
Riverside Church in New York City and Balboa Park in San Diego. He
recorded more than 50 records, cassette tapes and compact discs and was
named "Organist of the Year" in 1986 by the American Theater Organ
Society. "They really do call it the king of instruments," Mimi
Hazleton said. "It's a combination of all the sounds of the orchestra.
It's like being a conductor and entire orchestra." Mr. Hazleton had
three sons, one of them from his first marriage to Zoe Hazleton, which
ended in divorce. Born in Monterey on Sept. 27, 1942, Mr. Hazleton grew
up in Pacific Grove. He started playing professionally at age 11. "He
said when he'd play weddings, he'd have a stack of comic books next to
him," Mimi Hazleton said. Mr. Hazleton's organ playing as a teenager
financed the purchase of his first car, a turquoise and white 1957
Chevrolet. Mr. Hazleton graduated from San Francisco State University
and received an artist diploma from The Curtis Institute of
Philadelphia. He was assisstant to famed organist Richard Purvis at
Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Mimi Hazleton met her husband in Palo
Alto in 1969, when Mimi, a singer, auditioned to be his soloist. "He
was working with the children's choir, and I liked the way he handled
them. There was discipline and there was kindness there." The couple
married in 1975. Before their two sons were born, the Hazletons toured
together in Australia. Mr. Hazleton's favorite place to play was All
Saints Episcopal Church in Hillcrest, his wife said. The family moved
in 2002 to San Diego County from Allentown, Pa., where Mr. Hazleton
worked for 10 years in the sales department of Allen Church and Theater
Organs. The organ at All Saints was on the small side, compared to
others he had played, but Mr. Hazleton loved it. "He always said it was
tasty. Tasty was his highest compliment for something. It meant really
good," Mimi Hazleton said. At All Saints, Mr. Hazleton was designing an
expansion of the organ. He filled in a few times for the church's
organist and choirmaster, Robert MacLeod. "He could take a simple hymn
tune and play it straight and then doll it up and turn it inside out,"
MacLeod said. MacLeod said Mr. Hazleton had spiritual ties to the music
he played. Mr. Hazleton was at home in any denomination, MacLeod said.
When news of Mr. Hazleton's death reached the organ world, several
organists posted their thoughts on the American Theater Organ Society
Web Journal. "As organists, we all have our heroes," Walt Strony wrote.
"Tom Hazleton was mine. To me, he was the one organist that represented
the best of the best." Steve Adams wrote: "Always with impeccable
taste, each song in a Tom Hazleton program was akin to taking a
roller-coaster ride to an unknown destination. . . . Music is the
language of the heart and soul, and in the hands of a musical
'wordsmith,' we are invited into this realm that is free of the human
condition and able to soar on the wings of hope. Tom understood this,
because he took us there countless times in our lives." Survivors
beside his wife are sons, Geoffrey Hazleton of Columbus, Ohio, and
Christopher and Nicholas Hazleton of Oceanside; and sister, Nancy
Hazleton of Tucson. A requiem Mass is planned for 3 p.m. Saturday at
All Saints Episcopal Church, Sixth and Pennsylvania avenues, Hillcrest.
A concert prelude by organists Jonas Nordwall and Donna Parker is
scheduled at 2:30 p.m. The choir will sing sections of the "Fauré
Requiem." Donations may be sent to the All Saints Organ Fund at All
Saints Episcopal Church, 625 Pennsylvania Ave., San Diego, CA 92103.
