1928 (t) Elizabeth "Betty" Work (97)
Elizabeth "Betty" (Work) Kirby
Monterey County Herald (online ed.), CA March 2, 2007
January 7, 1910 ~ February 23, 2007 MONTEREY - Elizabeth Work Kirby
passed away peacefully at her home February 23, 2007. She was 97, and
her death followed a brief illness. Betty was born on January 7, 1910
to Maud Porter Work and T.A. Work, a pioneer force in the development
and preservation of the Monterey Peninsula. The youngest of six
children, Betty spent her days as a child at Point Cabrillo beach,
near the Hopkins Marine Station, watching local fishermen come and go
and playing with her brothers and sisters, among them: Stuart A. Work,
T.A. Work, Jr., and Frank Work ? all of whom pre-deceased their
sister. Her stories of growing up in the early times of Pacific Grove
captivated all who heard them. An active outdoorswoman, gifted
tennis player, and avid golfer, Betty flourished at Pacific Grove High
School. She graduated from UC Berkeley, majoring in Art History.
During the Second World War, she joined the WAVEs and, as Lieutenant
J.G. Betty Work, she was reputed to be the fastest paymaster on the
West Coast. Such dexterity and mental acuity were no doubt attributes
in her life-long love of the game of bridge, at which she was an
expert. Betty was never without a good book and a good conversation to
match. In 1946, she met Captain Leonard Kirby and the two married
later that year. They made their winter home in Hobe Sound, Florida,
at the Jupiter Island Club and summered each year at Thirty-One Mile
Island in Quebec. Some of her happiest memories as an adult were of
their summers there, fishing on the lake with house guests. This time
also enabled her to indulge in her passion for bird watching when she
wasn't spending time with her beloved black Labradors. Betty also
traveled with her husband extensively throughout the world. Whether on
their yacht, the Windward Star, in the Caribbean, or trekking through
previously untraveled wilderness with only one guide in New Guinea,
they were tremendously adventurous. After Captain Kirby's death in the
early 1980's, Betty made her home in Pebble Beach, and continued to
travel. Her adventures ranged from eating at McDonalds in Tulsa and
other points across the country on a driving trip, to playing bridge
on the QEII in the mid-Atlantic, to a culminating trip around the
world on the Concorde. Always honest, always forthright, always living
with great integrity, Betty found herself surrounded by many friends
of all backgrounds who respected her opinions and cared for
herheartfelt kindness. She made a point to be involved in private
charity as well as public. Publicly, she supported the Hobe Sound
Nature Center and reinforced her love of and connection to the
Monterey Peninsula through her support of the Monterey History and Art
Association, the C.K. Tuttle Photo Collection of Pacific Grove, and
the Maud Porter Work Rose Garden at La Mirada, among other ventures.
Betty is survived by her nephew and nieces, T.A. Work, III of San
Diego; the late Robert E. Work and Patricia Work of Pebble Beach;
Julie Work Beck of Corral de Tierra; Donna Work Silverberg of
Stanford; and many great and great-great nieces and nephews. Her keen
mind, her life of integrity, her forthright nature: all touched the
lives of many. Her family and friends will gather to celebrate Betty's
uncommon life on Sunday, March 11, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. at 592 Abrego
Street in Monterey. Her family offers a warm invitation to those
gracious friends in the community who wish to join them. In lieu of
flowers, the family requests any charitable donations in her memory be
made to the Casa Abrego Adobe Preservation Fund, 592 Abrego Street,
Monterey, or to the Monterey Museum of Art, 720 Via Mirada, Monterey,
to be attributed to the Maud Porter Work Rose Garden at La Mirada.

John Meldon Moss, 80 (Class of '44), died in the early hours of May 9,
2006 (his birthday) at a medical center in Yuba City, CA. He had been
under treatment for Parkinson's disease for a number of years, and
suffered a stroke several months before his death. His daughter Lesley
was with him at the end. Born in Oakland in 1926, John moved with his
parents John and Ruth Moss and his sister Susan ('48) to Pacific Grove
in 1935, where he attended Pacific Grove Grammar and High Schools.
Although he was 18 when he graduated in 1944, John's eyesight problems
kept him from being drafted. Ultimately, however, he served in the
U.S. Army at Camp Beale during 1945-46. John's special interest in
science at PGHS served him well at U.C. Berkeley, where he majored in
biochemistry. While at UC, John met and married Shirley Winkleman, a
bright and attractive fellow biochemistry student. Together they
established their home in Walnut Creek, where all three of their
children ware born, and where they continued to live throughout most
of John's career as a research chemist with Tidewater Associated Oil
Co. After John's retirement, he and Shirley bought 17 beautiful acres
of land in Oregon House, CA (in the foothills near Grass Valley),
where they built their retirement home. Tragically, they were not
destined to enjoy the planned retirement for long. Within three years
of moving into their new home, Shirley developed cancer. She died in
the spring of 1980. John continued to live there until his final
illness last year. His daughter Lesley and her husand and their
children moved to Oregon House several years ago and built a house not
far from John's place a move that was of great help and enjoyment to
him. John was known to many or most of us at PGHS as "Meldon." His
father - also John Meldon Moss - operated Peninsula Auto Parts in
Monterey for many years and was well known in the community. Of
historical interest is the fact that Moss Landing took its name from
John's great-grandfather, who established shipping facilities there in
the mid-nineteenth century. His survivors include his two daughters,
Lesley Harvell of Oregon House, CA, and Jennifer Poss of Homer, AK;
his son Charles of Anchorage, AK; his sister Susan McCall ('48) of
Rockville, MD; and five grandchildren.

experiences of his 13 month tour of duty and of that particular night
informed the rest of Bill Ross' life and were the reasons for his
return to Vietman. Bill's family moved from his birthplace to Pacific
Grove, CA in the early 50's. He graduated from Pacific Grove High
School, and later achieved an AA degree at Monterey Peninsula College.
