Vivien Charlotte Krumbholz, 79, of Pacific Grove, died Saturday at
Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula of heart failure. Born Aug
9, 1914, in Fresno, she had lived in Pacific Grove for 69 years. Mrs.
Krumbholz was an office manager for Pacific Gas and Electric Co. for 30
years before retiring in 1965. She was a member of the Cypress
Community Church in Monterey and the Pacific Grove Women's Golf Club.
Her husband, Lester, died in 1974, and Mrs. Krumbholz is survived by a
brother, Duane Brooks of Morgan Hill, and a sister, Helen Howard of
Gualala. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at El
Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove. Memorial services will follow at
Cypress Community Church at 2 p.m. The Paul Mortuary is in charge of
arrangements. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made

Edmond L. Capon Jr., 80, a former resident of Carmel Valley and Pacific
Grove, died in Lodi on Wednesday. Mr. Capon was born in Bicknell, Ind.,
on Oct 16, 1913, and his family moved to San Jose when he was a small
boy. They later moved to the Monterey Peninsula, where he attended
Pacific Grove High School. Mr. Capon, a retired butcher, owned several
meat markets on the Monterey Peninsula. He retired in 1976. He was an
active member of the Carmel Valley Community Church and a member of a
number of community organizations, including the Pacific Grove Masonic
Lodge. In 1987 he and his wife moved to Lodi to be near their daughter
and granddaughter. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; a daughter,
Mary Kraft of Lodi; a sister, Bernadette Walls of Morgan Hill; and one
granddaughter. Funeral services were held yesterday at Rocha's
Mortuary. Private burial will be in Lodi Memorial Cemetery. At his
request, there will be no visitation.

Kenneth R. Doud, a Salinas resident for 37 years, died Sunday at
Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was 71.
Mr. Doud was born in Gilroy and had worked as a carrier for the U.S.
Post Office Department and the Postal Service until his retirement. He
was a veteran of Army service in World War II. He was a member of the
national Association of Letter Carriers, Salinas Branch 1046, the
National Association of Federal Employees, Chapter 1496 of Salinas, and
the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 101 of Salinas. Mr. Doud is
survived by his wife, Dorothy; a niece, Betty Adams of Seaside, and
three nephews, including Robert Maxwell of Seaside. The rosary will be
recited tonight at 7 o'clock at the mortuary. Mass of the
Resurrection will be celebrated Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary of
the Nativity Catholic Church, with the Rev. Patrick Dooling, associate
pastor of Madonna del Sasso Catholic Church officiating. Brief rites
preceding the Mass will be held at 10 a.m. at the mortuary. Burial will
be in Queen of Heaven Cemetery.

Ex-P.G. councilman Charles French dies
Charles E. French, 76, of Carmel Valley - businessman, treasurer of
the Asilomar Operating Corp. and a former Pacific Grove city councilman
- died Wednesday at Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto. Born on
Jan. 2, 1914, in Lambsdown, Canada. Mr. French had lived on the
Peninsula since he was a child. He served on the Pacific Grove City
Council from 1953 to 1963 and on the Asilomar board, which governs the
Asilomar Conference Center, from the board's inception in 1956 until
his death. During that time, Mr. French served as president and vice
president of the board. At the time of his death, he held the office of
treasurer. Mr. French was the owner of the Thomas H. French Glass Co.
in Monterey until his retirement. He was a member and past president of
the Monterey Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also past
master of the Pacific Grove Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd degree
Scottish Rite Mason. Stoddard Johnston, president of the Asilomar
Operating Corp. board, said that Mr. French, as a councilman, was
involved with the founding of the board and had continued his
involvement throughout. "His dedication was enormous," Johnston
said. "The Long, long continuity he provided to the board has been
invaluable." Ed Whitaker, who went to school with Mr. French and
served with him on the Pacific Grove council and the Asilomar board,
described him as "a staunch member of the community. He did a lot of
charity that he didn't want publicized. A hard-working, fine family
man." Whitaker said Mr. French worked "from school days on" in
the glass business founded by his father, Thomas French. He recalled
that Mr. French was also instrumental in expanding Pacific Grove's
Municipal Golf Course from nine to 18 holes and in building the course
clubhouse. Mr. French's first wife, Lois, died in November 1983. He
is survived by his wife, Lillian; a son, Charles Jr. of Concord; two
daughters, Kathryn Lenheart of Santa Rosa and Deborah Brown of Round
Rock, Texas; a brother, John of Los Angeles; and seven grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Mission Mortuary on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.
Private family graveside services will be held Monday at El Carmelo
Cemetery in Pacific Grove. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m.
Monday at St. Mary's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church. The family suggests

Eugene V. Getz, 78, a native and lifelong resident of Pacific Grove and
former constable of the Pacific Grove Justice Court, died Thursday of
injuries suffered in an auto accident in Sanger. Mr. Getz was born
April 1, 1914. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving with the
55th Construction Battalion - the "Seabees" - in the Pacific.
Mr. Getz, who was known as Pudge, was a line crew foreman for Pacific
Telephone Co. for 28 years, supervising the construction of telephone
lines to the Big Sur Coast and to rural Monterey County. He later
worked as a security guard for Del Monte Properties Co. in Pebble Beach
for more than 15 years, and served for five years as court constable
for Judge Richard Eldred in Pacific Grove. Mr. Getz was a former
president of the Alano Club of Monterey and a member of Alcoholics
Anonymous for 26 years. He was considered an authority on the
Peninsula's history and development. He is survived by three sons,
Robert and Steven, both of Sanger, and Samuel, of Carmel Valley; a
daughter, Joann Paoletti of Fresno; a brother, Mac, of Pacific Grove;
and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Friday at 11
a.m. at the Little Chapel by-the-Sea in Pacific Grove. Cremation has
taken place under the direction of the Neptune Society of Fresno. The
family suggests that any memorial contributions be sent to the Alano
Club of Monterey.

Olga Johansen Hodgen, 79, a former resident of Pacific Grove and a
retired librarian for the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District,
died Saturday at Camarillo Convalescent Hospital in Camarillo. Mrs.
Hodgen, a native of Fresno, was born Jan. 24, 1913. She and her late
husband, James, were residents of Pacific Grove for more than 40 years.
She had lived in Camarillo about five years. Survivors include a
daughter, Claudia Bailey of Westlake Village, three grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren. Services will be private. The Telophase
Society of Southern California is in charge of cremation, and ashes
will be scattered at sea. The family suggests that any memorial

Ruth Lawrence of Pacific Grove, a retired medical technician, died
Tuesday at Beverly Manor Convalescent Hospital at the age of 77. Born
in New Hampton, Iowa, on Nov. 17, 1912, Ms. Lawrence spent her
childhood in Pacific Grove and graduated from Pacific Grove High
School. She then attended the University of California at Berkeley. She
served in the Women's Army Corps during World War II. Ms. Lawrence
was later employed as an electroencephalogram operator at the
University of California at San Francisco until her retirement. Ms.
Lawrence is survived by a brother. G. Robert Lawrence of Santa Ana, and
three sisters, Grace Gutsell and Helen McReynolds, both of Pacific
Grove, and Anne Logan of Santa Ana. No services will be held. Cremation
will take place at the Little Chapel by-the-Sea, under the direction of
the Paul Mortuary. Inurnment will be in the family plot at El Carmelo
Cemetery in Pacific Grove.

Myfanwy Lloyd, a longtime resident of Pacific Grove, died Sunday at
Pacific Grove Convalescent Hospital after a period of failing health.
She was 76. She was born in England on Aug. 29, 1911. Miss Lloyd was a
retired curator for the Monterey region of the state Department of
parks and Recreation. She was a member of the Soroptimist Club and the
Pacific Grove heritage Society, active with the Pacific Grove Museum of
Natural History and a former member of the Business and Professional
Women's Club. Miss Lloyd had no immediate family. At her request, no
services have been planned. Cremation will be at Little Chapel by the
Sea. Inurnment will be in El Carmelo Cemetery. The Paul Mortuary is in

Ella MacLeod Tucker, a former Pacific Grove resident, died Thursday in
Tucson, Ariz. She was 83. Born Oct. 30, 1914, in Visalia, she had lived
in Pacific Grove from 1928 until 1955, when she moved to Arizona. Mrs.
Tucker and her twin sister Ethel graduated from Pacific Grove High
School in 1932. She and her husband owned Grant's Home Supply in
Pacific Grove for 16 years. Mrs. Tucker is survived by two daughters,
JoAnn Ladd of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Garree Innis of Tucson; two
sisters, Margaret "Pinky" Fitzsimmons of Monterey and Alice
Sullivan of Pacific Grove; four grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren. Her sister Ethel preceded her in death. At her
request, no services will be held. The family suggests that any

Frances Josephine Cass of Pacific Grove died Tuesday, Aug. 23 [1983]
after a lengthy illness at the Hospice of the Monterey Peninsula. She
was 69. Born July 27, 1914 in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., she was a 1932
graduate of PG High and was member of the PG High Alumni Association.
She retired in 1980 from her civil service position at Fort Ord, where
she worked in the procurement department. She was preceded in death by
a daughter, Kathy Lynch in 1979. She is survived by four daughters,
Francie Hicks of Sacramento, Sherry Gruwell of Pacific Grove, Jo Ann
Lehto of Riverside, and Lynn Hayes of Santa Clara; two sisters, Delores
Zuech of Salinas and Nina Evans of Folsom. Also surviving are 11
grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services were
conducted at El Estero Chapel of the Mission Mortuary. The Rev. Joseh

Eileen Frances Doelter, a former Pacific Grove resident, died Saturday
at Oak Valley Care Center in Oakdale. She was 85. Born July 16, 1914,
in Galveston, Texas, she moved to Pacific Grove when she was 4 years
old and lived on the Peninsula for more than 70 years. She moved to
Sonora five years ago. Mrs. Doelter was an office supervisor at Fort
Ord for 30 years. Her husband, Carl, owned Pop Ernest's Restaurant,
one of the first restaurants on Fisherman's Wharf. Mrs. Doelter was a
member of St. Mary's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Pacific Grove.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Sands of Sonora; a brother,
Patrick Smythe of San Rafael; three grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren. Her husband died in 1979. A celebration f her life
will be held June 24 at her home in Pacific Grove, located at 921
Ripple St. Burial will take place at Monterey Cemetery. Oakdale

Lowell Franklin Todd, the first Eagle Scout from Monterey County and an
Olympic-class athlete, died Tuesday at his Monterey home following a
period of failing health. He was 70. A native of Pacific Grove, born
Jan. 5, 1913, he attended Pacific Grove schools and competed in various
sports. During this period, he became the first Boy Scout in the county
to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. He later attended Modesto Junior
College and San Jose State College, where he starred in track and
field, with his specialty the javelin throw. Mr. Todd later competed
for the San Francisco Olympic Club and toured Europe in 1938 as a
member of the U.S. Amateur Athletic Union team in preparation for an
appearance in the 1940 Olympics. The Olympic games were canceled with
the outbreak of World War II. He later earned his master's degree
from Columbia University and went on to teach and coach at Shafter High
School in the Kern County High School District for 31 years. After
retiring in 1973, he returned to the Monterey Peninsula, where he
enjoyed salmon fishing and playing golf. He is survived by his wife,
Barbara; daughter, Julie Marie Freet of Long Beach; and brothers,
Lavere E. of Pacific Grove and Loren R. of Burlingame. Private
cremation has already taken place. Memorial services are planned Friday
at 2 p.m. at the Little Chapel by-the-Sea, with the Paul Mortuary in
charge of arrangements. The family suggests memorial contributions to
the Pulmonary Wellness program at Community Hospital or to the Visiting

Baptist Church. Mrs. Tibbs is survived by son and daughter-in-law Paul
and Carla Tibbs; brother Howard Wilson of Arizona; three grandchildren;
four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was
preceded in death by husband Paul Tibbs in 1989 and granddaughter Joan
Lawson. At Mrs. Tibbs' request, no services will be held. Remembrances
may be sent to Arthur Road Baptist Church, 360 Arthur Road,
Watsonville, 95076 or Heartland Hospice, 2511 E. Garden Road, #B200,
Monterey, 93950. Arrangements are under the direction of Santa Cruz
Cremation Service, 1048 Cayuga St., Santa Cruz.
