Pacific Grove Family's Second Mystery Death
Frances Victoria (Vicki) Collins, 20, of Pacific Grove died
unexpectedly this moring at her home, the second such death in the
family in the past four days. Her sister, Brenda, 19, died at home
Thursday afternoon. Coroner Christopher Hill Jr. said both deaths
apparently were from natural causes but that autopsies so far have not
identified what they were. Funeral services for Brenda, scheduled for
this morning were canceled and joint services for the sisters are
pending at the Paul Mortuary. Vicki apparently failed to awaken this
morning and was dead by the time an ambulance could reach the home, 410
Monterey Ave. Brenda collapsed and died Thursday afternoon under
similar circumstances. Neither had shown signs of illness before their
deaths. Hill said more detailed autopsy investigations will be made,
including microscopic and toxicology tests, in an effort to solve the
mysterious deaths. Surviving the girls are their parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Paul Collins, a sister, Faye, and three brothers, Paul Collins Jr., and
Selwyn and Terry Collins, all of Pacific Grove. They also leave their
paternal grandmother, Mrs. Vicki Fraxton of Dallas, Tex., and maternal
grandfather, John McKenney of Texas.

Caltrans worker mourned
By CLARISSA ALJENTERA
The neighbors on Fairfax Drive feared something was wrong when they saw
all the Caltrans vehicles parked outside Michael Feliciano's home late
Wednesday. It turned out they were right. Feliciano had been killed in
a three-car pileup on Highway 101 shortly before the afternoon commute.
Feliciano, 55, was driving home to North Salinas, northbound in his
orange Caltrans truck, when it collided with a southbound pickup driven
by David Lopez, 57, of Gonzales. The California Highway Patrol said
Lopez's Chevy Silverado crossed the median and plowed into Feliciano's
truck. Lopez was killed, too, and his 10-year-old son was critically
injured. Neighbors on Feliciano's quiet street were grieving Thursday.
"We knew something was going on," said Don Gullion. "We saw the
Caltrans cars who were his co-workers or something." Gullion's wife,
Del, went over to the Felicianos early Thursday to express her sympathy
to Feliciano's wife, Martha. "She seemed OK," said Del Gullion. "He was
always friendly," said Del Gullion. "He always said 'hello. '"Neighbors
said the couple had a bulldog that Michael Feliciano occasionally
walked around the block. Feliciano worked as a lead maintenance worker
out of south Salinas, a spokeswoman for Caltrans said. He and co-worker
Tharon Franklin were heading back from a job near Chualar when the
accident occurred. "They had been setting up a lane closure for a
flooded lane," said spokeswoman Susana Zavala. "Mike gave his life to
protect and help his fellow motorists: there is no greater sacrifice,"
Zavala said. California Highway Patrol officer Craig Jackson said the
accident was most likely unrelated to the storm that passed through on
Wednesday. "It wasn't raining," Jackson said. "It was slightly wet."
Jackson said investigators spent 10 hours at the crash site but hadn't
determined an exact cause. "We still have no idea why he (Lopez)
crossed over," Jackson said. Lopez's truck apparently swerved across
the median and struck a red Honda sedan before crunching into
Feliciano's truck. Extraction tools had to be used to remove Feliciano
from the truck. Lopez's 10-year-old son was taken by helicopter to San
Jose Medical Center and was in critical condition. The passenger in the
Caltrans truck along with the occupants of the Honda were treated for
minor injuries at local hospitals and released. Traffic going north on
101 was diverted onto Old Stage Road until 2 a.m. Thursday. The
Multi-Agency Investigation Team composed mostly of members from CHP and
Caltrans were still investigating and surveying the scene Thursday.

Two killed in crash along Highway 101
Wreckage ties up traffic
By GEORGE B. SANCHEZ / The Salinas Californian
CHUALAR -- A car crash Wednesday afternoon along Highway 101 just north
of Chualar left two people dead and injured four others, one
critically, authorities said. Both northbound lanes of the highway were
blocked by the wreckage, creating a back-up that stretched to Gonzales.
The California Highway Patrol said the lanes were likely to remain
closed until midnight Wednesday as a special team investigated the
crash. A red Honda, a Chevrolet pick-up truck and a Caltrans truck
collided around 4:10 p.m. The Chevy, driven by David Lopez, 57, of
Gonzales, was southbound on Highway 101 when, for an unknown reason, it
crossed the median strip and collided head-on with the Caltrans truck,
killing driver Michael Feliciano, 54, of Salinas, said CHP Lt. Bill
Perlstein. Nearly three hours after the crash, emergency workers used a
Jaws of Life tool to extricate Feliciano's body from the wreckage.
Lopez's 10-year-old son, whose name was not released, was critically
injured and taken by helicopter to a San Jose hospital, according to
the Monterey County coroner's office. Though it's unclear how, the
Honda also became entangled in the crash, the CHP said. Three other
people with lesser injuries were taken by ambulance to local hospitals,
said Lt. Mike Foster, one of 12 Salinas Rural firefighters who also
responded to the accident. The CHP did not release the names of the
other injured people. Wreckage was strewn across both northbound lanes.
The front passenger side of the Caltrans truck was smashed and bent
inwards with engine parts lodged in the driver's compartment. Several
Caltrans employees stood vigil at the scene throughout the afternoon
and into the early evening. Traffic was backed up on northbound Highway
101 while southbound traffic bottlenecked as drivers slowed down to
gaze at the wreckage. The Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation
team, CHP's accident reconstruction team, was on its way from Fresno to
assess the accident, CHP Capt. Pat Camara said.

Man dies from injuries suffered from fall on Carmel Valley Road
A Carmel Valley man died Saturday after he fell off his bicycle and
onto Carmel Valley Road the day before, the California Highway Patrol
reported. Charles Giles, 53, suffered injuries to his head after he
fell off his bicycle about 5 p.m. Friday, according to the CHP. He
reportedly was not wearing a helmet. Giles was treated at Community
Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. He died from injuries at the
hospital about 12:45 p.m. Saturday, according to the Monterey County
Coroner's office. "This was a shame. It didn't have to happen,"
said longtime friend Hector Chavez, owner of Winning Wheels Bicycle
Shop in Pacific Grove. Giles had been given a helmet by Winning Wheels
when the shop sponsored him one year in the annual AIDS Ride, Chavez
said. But it was "old school" not to wear a helmet while riding.
Chavez said, and Giles was of the old school. "In the old days you
wore a cycling cap or at least a leather hairnet," Chavez recalled.
"That was the headgear at the time - in the '70s and before.
"Cycling without a helmet was an acceptable thing, because you always
felt you had full control of your bike." Bell came out in 1978 with
the first "hardshell" helmet, which cyclists called the
"Turtle," Chavez said. "That saved my head once." Foam helmets
followed. "I've known quite a few who had serious accidents and
that's what kept them alive." Chavez said his niece, to whom he'd
given two bicycle helmets "went out for a morning ride and decided it
was too nice a day to wear a helmet. She was in a coma for over a
month." Giles, 53, raced in cycling events in California, Oregon and
Hawaii, where he competed in that state's Iron Man Triathlon. He won
the one-time Sam Morse Bicycle Classic at Pebble Beach, was a founding
member of the Monterey Peninsula Velo Club in 1972 and played a part in
founding the Butterfly Criterium in 1973, a cycling race held annually
in downtown Pacific Grove for many years. Chavez met him in 1979 when
both were competing in cycling events. "Martin was one of the better
riders on the Peninsula." Giles and his brothers, Warren and Michael
Giles, were co-owners of WM&M Cyclery, which did business in Pacific
Grove for many years before the three sold it. The shop in Forest
Avenue was "kind of a meeting place at one time for the riders,"
"Chavez recalled. Poor health had kept Giles out of competition for
the past 15 years. Chavez said, but "cycling was what kept him going.
Every day, he'd go out and ride. It was part of his life." Michael
Giles died in 1976. Warren Giles now lives in LaGrande, Ore.

'Old School' cyclist opted not to wear helmet
By Kevin Howe / staff writer
A Carmel Valley man who died of injuries suffered in a bicycle accident
was an experienced, and competitive cyclist for many years on the
Monterey Peninsula. Charles Martin Giles was riding east on Carmel
Valley Road on the downhill stretch west of Scarlett Road shortly
before 5:10 p.m. Friday when his front tire blew and he lost control of
his bicycle, the California Highway Patrol reported. The bike fell on
its left side and Giles, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown to
the pavement, striking his head, the CHP said. Giles was taken to
Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, where he died at 12:45
p.m. Saturday of head injuries, according to the Monterey County
Coroner's Office. The weather was clear and the pavement dry, the CHP
said.
