Polio Claims P.G. School Freshman Student
Bulbar poliomyelitis caused the death yesterday afternoon in a Salinas
hospital of Carl Clifton Gasperson Jr., 14-year old freshman student
at Pacific Grove High School, according to a report submitted by Dr.
Ernest E. Simard, county pathologist. The youth was stricken five days
ago and had been under treatment in the isolation unit ward of the
hospital. According to a statement made this morning to The Herald by
Dr. Kenneth C. Sheriff of the Monterey County Health Department, the
health authorities are not apprehensive of an epidemic - While such a
case involving residual paralysis is rare in this area, mild forms of
endemic polio are reported from time to time and successfully treated.
One such case, said Dr. Sheriff, was reported today. Yesterday's polio
victim was the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Gasperson Sr., of 729 Eardley
avenue, Pacific Grove, and a native of Salinas. He lived most of his
14 years on the Peninsula and was highly regarded by his teachers and
fellow students. He was president of the student body while attending
elementary school, and an outstanding athlete at Pacific Grove High
School, participating in track and basketball. In addition to his
parents, he leaves two brothers, Donald and David Gasperson of Pacific
Grove. Private funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. tomorrow at the

Mystery Caller Tips Police to Death of Girl
Monterey police are investigating the mysterious death of a young girl
at her home in Oak Grove just before midnight last night. Dead is
Shirley Jeanne Flynn, about 18, who lived at 114 Grant street,
Monterey. Cause of death has not yet been determined. Monterey police
were called to the address by telephone at 11:30 last night by a male
caller who identified himself as Henry Ragsdell, and said a woman was
dying from asphyxiation. The fire department resuscitator and an
ambulance were dispatched to the address. There police found the body
of Miss Flynn, lying on the floor beside her bed, face down. The
resuscitator failed to revive her and she was pronounced dead by Dr.
A.F. Kandlbinder. The mystery began when police began checking on the
person who sent in the call. Ragsdell, who owns the property and lives
in the house in front of that occupied by Miss Flynn, said he had been
asleep at the time and had sent in no call to the police. No one else
was found on the premises. Neighbors reported a car had been cruising
up and down the street shortly before the police car, ambulance and
fire truck arrived. An autopsy was ordered by Deputy Coroner Chris
Hill, but no evidence of foul play was discovered. Miss Flynn had been
suffering from a bad cold and police theorized this morning that she
may have suffocated in a coughing spell. Police Chief Charles Simpson
said this morning there is no evidence of any foul play in connection
with the death, but the investigation is continuing. The house, he
said was very neat and clean, and there was no sings of any struggle.
Miss Flynn had been living alone. She was employed by a Monterey auto
sales company as a cashier. Her friends are being questioned, but
there is no suspicion of any crime at this point. Two of her friends
said she had been confined to the house yesterday with a bad cold.
Miss Flynn had been a resident of the Peninsula for many years. Her
father, Michael Flynn, lives in San Francisco. Funeral arrangements
are pending at the Mission Mortuary.
Monterey Peninsula Herald, CA Jan. 8, 1952 p2

Pacific Grove Student Drowns
Tragic Ending to Graduation Party at Big Sur Park
Tragedy ended the Pacific Grove High School senior picnic at 1 p.m.
yesterday when a graduating student was suddenly swept into a
whirlpool and drowned before the eyes of his classmates. The victim
was Ronald Fifer, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fifer of 1001 David
Ave., near Pacific Grove. Heroic efforts to save the youth were made
by three other senior boys, but it was 15 minutes before the body was
found. Two hours of artificial respiration by the youths and later by
the Carmel Red Cross and Fire Department resuscitation crew was
futile. Young Fifer, who would have graduated June 11, went on the
picnic with 70 other students. He had been hiking in a gorge when he
separated from his group, and took a short cut towards the picnic
camp. Taking his shoes off, he tied them together and hung them around
his neck, and was wading down stream toward several companions.
Sitting on the rocks and watching Fifer were Ben Mosley, 18, of 373
Junipero Ave.; Richard Taras, 18, Boxx 116; Jim Southwell, 18, of 316
Eighth St.; Miss Clair Pittman of 243 Lighthouse Ave.; and Miss Winnie
Eggers, 17, of 1119 Ripple Ave. They shouted and waved to Fifer, but
he appeared not to hear them because of the sound of the rushing
water. Fifer stepped around a rock in the narrows of the gorge, and it
appeared that a fast current caught him and pulled him under. He never
came up, but his hand was seen for a moment above the water. Mosley,
Taras and Southwell plunged into the stream. Unable to locate Fifer,
the group called two State Rangers, who came to the spot and found the
body in the pool. While resuscitation work continued, the Carmel Red
Cross ambulance with fire department crewmen was called. Val Clement,
class advisor, and Miss Naomi Giddings, counselor, attended the picnic
with the group. One bus-load of students returned home on schedule,
while a second, including passengers who were witnesses, was held over
until completion of the sheriff's and coroner's investigation. Deputy
Coroner Chris Hill said that the victim had suffered only slight
abrasions. Fifer has lived in Pacific Grove for the past seven years.
His father is an upholsterer. Besides his parents, he leaves three
sisters, Mrs. Joan Mueller, Robert Fifer and Patricia Fifer, of
Pacific Grove. Services are to be at Mission Mortuary in Monterey
tomorrow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Bernard Lowery officiating. Interment
will follow at El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove. Pallbearers are
Classmates Warren Attebury, John Matteson, Norman Mortgnoni, Fred
Heldt, Minor Schumaker, and Ted Simmons.

Pacific Grove Youth Drowns at Big Sur
One Dead in Bay Air Crash
A 19-year-old Pacific Grove youth drowned yesterday at Big Sur and a
San Mateo man is believed dead after an air crash off Moss Landing on
Saturday. These and other incidents of violence shattered the
happiness of the Peninsula's pleasantest weekend of the year, , balmy
weather bringing thousands to beaches, golf courses and other
recreation spots. James Thompson, 18, of 308 Chestnut St., Pacific
Grove, drowned about 7:30 p.m. yesterday when he slipped into the deep
end of a concrete pool at Big Sur. A companion failed in efforts to
rescue him. Kjell Jarier, 23, of San Mateo, is missing and presumed
death after a large wave snatched the landing gear of the low-flying
plane in which he was a passenger and brought it crashing into the
sea. The pilot of the plane swam to shore after the crash which
occurred off Moss Landing about 7 p.m. Saturday. They mystery attack
and wounding of a 28-year-old Fort Ord soldier at Hopkins marine
station early Sunday, nine automobile accidents with 18 persons
injured and two near drownings off Carmel Beach also marred the
weekend. The auto accidents are reported on page 6. No traffic
fatalities were reported in the county. Big Sur Ranger Willard Moore
reported that Thompson and a friend, Arnold Lopez, 25, of a85 Quarter
Deck Way, Pacific Grove, were walking along the edge of the pool when
Lopez fell in. The young men were the only ones near the pool although
hundreds of swimmers had used it earlier in the day. According to the
story Lopez told Moore, he was able to crawl out but as he was doing
so, Thompson slipped in. Lopez, using his rousers as a rope, threw
them out to Thompson. When Thompson did not come to the surface, Lopez
ran to the ranger's house for help. The ranger dived in but was unable
to locate the youth. The body was finally recovered by a grappling
hook about one and a half hours later. It was found about 30 feet from
the edge. Ranger Moore reported that neither Thompson nor Lopez could
swim. It was impossible to see the body on the floor of the pool about
10 feet deep where Thompson slipped in, because of heavy silt which
had been stirred up by the days swimmers. Jarier's body has not been
found. The pilot of the plane, Manuel Souza, 27, of San Francisco, was
released from Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital yesterday after
treatment for shock. The wreckage of the plane, a Cessna 140, washed
ashore three quarters of a mile north of Marina. Souza and Jarier had
taken off from San Mateo Airport on a short pleasure hop. The
sheriff's office, Civil Air Patrol, the Monterey Coast Guard's 83-foot
rescue boat and others participated in the search for the missing man.
The sheriff's office received another report of a plane crash Saturday
but this was not confirmed. It had been reported that a plane had gone
down east of Gonzales. However, Sheriff Jack McCoy said that no planes
in the area were reported as missing. .... The drowning victim, James
Bolin Thompson, was a student at Monterey Peninsula College. He was
born May 28, 1938 at Carmel. In his second year at MPC, he was
majoring in art, having received a scholarship from Pacific Grove High
School. He is survived by his parents, three sisters, Penny and twins
Marilyn and Carolyn, grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. O. Knepper of Gilroy,
aunts, Mrs. L.E. Todd of Carmel Valley and Mrs. George Culp of Orinda,
and an uncle, Glen Knepper of Gilroy. Services are pending at The Paul
Mortuary.

Body of Man Found on Beach at Spanish Bay
A Monterey Peninsula man was found dead Saturday afternoon near
Seventeen Mile Drive in Pebble Beach by San Jose area tourists who
reported the corpse to Del Monte Forest security, said Robert B. Shaw,
Monterey County deputy coroner. Shaw said identification of the man
was being withheld pending notification of relatives. He said an
autopsy performed at The Paul Mortuary revealed the cause of death as
a drug overdose. The corpse of the 33-year-old white male was
discovered at 1:54 p.m. about 60 to 70 feet from the scenic route at
Spanish Bay where the road curves away from Asilomar, Shaw said. Time
of death was put only at some time Saturday morning. The man was found
fully clothed, lying on his back and could've appeared to anyone
having seen him earlier to have been sunbathing, Shaw said, noting no
evidence of foul play. The Pebble Beach station of the California
Forestry Department also responded to the beach scene. A former
Washington state resident, the dead man had a couple of Peninsula
addresses, Shaw said, but he couldn't indicate the correct home town
as the coroner's staff was trying to locate relatives for confirmation
Saturday night. Shaw also said that relatives still had not been
contacted to allow releasing the identity of a young man who committed
suicide using a shotgun Thursday in Salinas. The coroner's office said
the 21-year old black man, recently discharged from the Army and
despondent about his inability to find a job, was found dead at 5 p.m.
by a woman with whom he had been living in a Salinas apartment; the
body was taken to Muller Mortuary.

overdose, according to Coroner Harvey Hillbun. It is unknown at this
time if the death was accidental or intentional, Hillbun said. The
body was found at 1:54 p.m. at Spanish Bay near Asilomar State Beach.

Mrs. Matteson Succumbs in Cancer Battle
Mrs. Connie Matteson, whose husband waged a successful court fight to
gain permission for her to be treated with the controversial drug
Laetrile, died Friday at Community Hospital after a seven-year battle
against cancer. A hospital spokesman said the 32-year-old mother of
two died at about 3:15 p.m. She had been admitted to the hospital
Tuesday following an apparent relapse. Her husband, Walter Matteson
Jr., a Pacific Grove service station and towing company operator, was
granted a temporary restraining order in U.S. District Court exempting
him and Mrs. Matteson from federal regulations barring importation of
Laetrile. In a subsequent court action, retired Monterey Superior
Court Judge Stanley Lawson granted a preliminary injunction holding
both the state Health and Safety and Administrative codes
unconstitutional in the case of Mrs. Matteson. Lawson's order also
prohibited the prosecution of any doctor who would agree to administer
the drug to her. Pacific Grove attorney Ronald McGregor, representing
the Mattesons in both court actions, argued that restrictions on the
importation and use of laetrile deprived his client of her rights
under the Fifth and 14th Amendments to the Constitution, including the
right to life. Services for Mrs. Matteson are pending at Paul
Mortuary.

Pacific Grove Man Dies, Three Hurt in Accident
A Pacific Grove man was killed at 12:35 a.m. today in a spectacular
automobile accident on the Salinas-Monterey Highway near Spreckels.
John L. Miller, 22, of 114 19th St. died of injuries when his car,
traveling at an estimated 85 miles per hour, rammed into the rear of
another car going 55, the California Highway Patrol said. Three other
people were hurt in the crash. Miller's car was westbound in the
inside lane when he lost control and it crossed over into the outside
westbound lane, striking the rear of a car driven by Gordon Allen
Mayfield, 18, of Salinas, who sustained minor injuries. After hitting
Mayfield's car, Miller's car overturned two and one-half times,
ejecting the driver on the north shoulder, continuing down an
embankment with a passenger still inside. That passenger, Gary Heiden,
of 345 Dela Vina, Monterey, received major injuries and was taken to
Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. After being hit, Mayfield's car spun
and then slid broadside down the south embankment. A passenger in his

P.G. Musician Slain by Shotgun Robbers in L.A.
Craig Mitchell Callas, a 25-year-old Monterey Peninsula musician, was
shot to death by would-be robbers Friday night in Los Angeles. He was
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton K. Callas of Pacific Grove. Although
the official Los Angeles Police Department report on Callas' death was
not available Saturday, members of the family learned from friends
with whom Callas had been living that the shooting took place about 11
p.m. Friday when Callas and another musician left an audition and jam
session. Callas and the other musician reportedly were accosted by
four robbers but convinced them they had nothing of value to take. The
musicians had put their instruments in the car and were getting ready
to leave when the robbers pulled alongside in a car and fired a
shotgun blast which killed Callas. It was not known whether the other
musician was injured. Callas was born Aug. 22, 1952, and began playing
the guitar when he was twelve. He attended Pacific Grove High School
and studied music at Monterey Peninsula College. He had played locally
with jasmine T. Slaughter and Lovera, touring the Southwest Untied
States on the Ramada Inn circuit with the latter group for several
months. A guitar player and composer, he also taught guitar and
transcribed and arranged music for the groups with which he played.
Since moving to Los Angeles last August, Callas had done studio work
and played backup for singers Eldridge and Gregory. He recently won a
quarterfinalist's award for one of his own compositions in the
American Son Festival. Besides his parents, Callas is survived by two
younger brothers, Bryan and Kendall, and a sister, Lynette. A memorial
service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Paul Mortuary.
