L. Brooks Bowhay, first Monterey harbormaster, dies
L. Brooks Bowhay, 64, of Monterey, retired harbormaster of Monterey,
died of a cerebral hemorrhage Sunday [Feb 2] at Community Hospital of
the Monterey Peninsula. Born Jan. 22, 1933, in Bakersfield, he had
lived in Monterey for 60 years. A graduate of Robert H. Down Elementary
and Pacific Grove High School, Mr. Bowhay earned a bachelor's degree
in navigation and seamanship from the California Maritime Academy in
Vallejo in 1955. After graduating, he served in the Navy for three
years as a submarine diving officer. In 1960, he became Monterey's
first harbormaster. He resigned in 1967 to serve as the marine
superintendent for Stanford University's Hopkins Marine Station. He
also worked for the Del Monte Corp., training fishing crews and
circumnavigating the globe several times a year. In 1976, Mr. Bowhay
resumed his position as harbormaster, which he held until retiring in
1994. He was a past president of the California Association of Port
Captains and Harbormasters, a past director of the Panama Canal Pilots
Association, a consultant for the University of Hawaii Oceanographic
Facility, a delegate to the United Nations Fisheries and Agriculture
Conference and a member of the California Marine Affairs and Navigation
Conference. Mr. Bowhay was also a member of the Monterey Peninsula
Yacht Club, the Pacific Coast Congress of Port Managers and
Harbormasters, the Research Vessel Operators Council and a charter
member of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. He is survived by his wife, Judy;
a son, Michael of Monterey; two daughters, Cindy Petrick of Auburn and
Jenny Bowhay of San Francisco; three brothers, Philbrick of Carmel,
Michael of Walnut Creek and Tom of Jackson; a sister, Shirley McCarthy
of Honolulu; and three grandchildren. Cremation will be at the Little
Chapel by-the-Sea, followed by graveside services at 1 p.m. Thursday at
El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove. The Paul Mortuary is in charge of

Jeannie Marie Avila, 59, a homemaker and lifelong resident of the
Monterey Peninsula, died of complications of diabetes at her home in
Seaside on Tuesday. Mrs. Avila, who was born in Monterey on May 12,
1932, attended Pacific Grove schools and, as a teenager, worked in the
canneries in Monterey. Survivors include three sons, Dennis and Manuel
of Seaside and Michael of Sacramento; five daughters, Rose Mendoza and
Debbie, Barbara, Sharon and Dottie Avila, all of Seaside; a brother,
Robert Carroll of Monterey; a sister, Joyce Foster of Seaside; her
mother, Dorothy Wheeler of Pacific Grove; five grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews. Another sister, Cookie Perez, died in 1983.
Private family inurnment will be held at a later date at El Carmelo

Frank Castro of Stockton, a native of Pacific Grove, died Wednesday at
St. Joseph's Hospital in Stockton. He was 65. Born Dec. 18, 1932, in
Pacific Grove, he had lived in Stockton for one year, coming from
Merced. Mr. Castro was a retired high school teacher and football
coach. He is survived by two sons, Luis Castro of Los Angeles and
Reggie Smith of Palmdale; a daughter, Kelly Bestolarides of Stockton;
five sisters, Albertine Potter, Aurelie Garcia and Elena Walker, all of
Pacific Grove, Carmen Courtney of Carmel Valley and Tamjay Castro of

Marvin "Lea" Dodd, a former deputy sheriff and a self-employed
painter for more than 20 years, died of a sudden heart attack Saturday
while working in Monterey. He was 67. Born Feb. 6, 1932, in Corcoran,
he moved to the Monterey Bay area in 1939. He graduated from Pacific
Grove High School, served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of Pacific
Grove Lodge, F&AM. He enjoyed fishing and golfing with his friends. Mr.
Dodd is survived by his mother, Zula Mae Dodd of Marina; three
daughters, Terry of Northern California and Robin Deguara and Randi

sudden heart attack while working on Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, in Monterey,
Calif. He was 67. Lea graduated from Pacific Grove High School and
served in the U.S. Navy. Prior to moving to Billings in 1964, he was a
deputy sheriff for Monterey County. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid

Carl C. Gasperson Jr. Succumbs to Dreaded Polio
Carl Clifton Gasperson Jr., who became ill at his home last Saturday,
passed away Wednesday at a local hospital, the victim of poliomyelitis
according to findings of an autopsy performed by Dr. Ernest Simerd,
county pathologist. The popular 14-year-old Pacific Grove high school
freshman was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Clifton Gasperson of this
city. A native of Salinas, young Gasperson had lived in the Grove
nearly all his life. In addition to his parents he is survived by two
brothers, Donald and David Gasperson, both of Pacific Grove. Private
services will be conducted today by the Rev. James Baxter at the Paul
funeral home, and burial will take place in the El Carmelo cemetery.

Salinas - Ann Ellen Smart, a retired police officer and homemaker,
died Saturday at her home in Salinas. She was 67. Born Jan 8, 1933, in
Salinas, she was a lifelong Monterey County resident. Mrs. Smart was
one of the first women police officers in Carmel, where she worked from
1966 to 1971. She enjoyed training dogs, especially border collies. She
was a member of the Border Collie Society of America and founder of the
Border Collie Society of Northern California and Border Collie rescue
of Northern California. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; a son,
Peter Agee of Salinas; two daughters, Chris Agee Davis of Monterey and
Patricia Agee Raney of Greenfield; three stepsons, William Smart of
Salinas, Timothy Smart of Escalon and Michael Smart of San Anselmo; and
10 grandchildren. Private family services will be held. The family

County for 25 years and then in various places before settling in Lake
Havasu City 22 years ago. He is survived by his wife, Marie; a son,
Robin Houde of Southern California; a stepson, Daryl Nyberg of Lake
Havasu City; a stepdaughter, Laurie Greenwell of Lake Havasu City; his
father, George Houde of San Luis Obispo; a sister, Shereen Ease of San

Dale Kenneth Kirkman, 71, of Cave Junction died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001,
at his home. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m, Saturday at the

698, Medford, OR 97501. Kirkman was born March 27, 1930 in Pacific
Grove, Calif. He served in the U. S. Army, the U. S. Air Force and the
U. S. Navy, as a disaster control coordinator. In 1984, he retired as a
firefighter for the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, Calif. He
moved to the Illinois Valley in 1985 from Seaside, Calif. On May 5,
1992, in Las Vegas, he married Carol Easterford, who survives. He was
licensed to work as a private investigator. He was a silversmith and
enjoyed leather making and working on his computer. In addition to his
wife, survivors include nine sons, Duane Kirkman of Grants Pass, Shawn
Kirkman of Cave Junction, Bobby Kirkman of Monterey, Calif., David and
Steven Kirkman, both of Seaside, Calif., Toby Kirkman of Virginia, and
Donny Kirkman of New Mexico; three daughters, Monica Kirkman of New
Mexico, Mary Faust of Yoakum, Texas, and Alice Heinisch of Tracy,
Calif,; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ward Alan Kirkman, the chief of the Monterey Peninsula Airport's Fire
Department and a longtime firefighter, died Monday at his Monterey home
of an apparent heart attack. He was 55. Mr. Kirkman, who was also known
as Pete, started as a firefighter 30 years ago for the Pacific Grove
Fire Department, first as a volunteer and then as a regular department
member. After serving as a member of the civilian fire department
operated by the Navy Postgraduate School, he stayed on to establish the
airport district's department at its inception in 1972. Mr. Kirkman
was born July 21, 1931, in Pacific Grove. He graduated from Pacific
Grove High School in 1950. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and
served in Korea during the war. He is survived by his wife, Inez; two
daughters, Rachelle Steiger of San Luis Obispo and Hillary Lynn Kirkman
of Pacific Grove, both form his marriage to his former wife, Shereen
Houde of Pacific Grove; two brothers, Dale of Selma, Ore., and Duane of
Salinas; his mother, Alice Melder of Monterey; four stepchildren and
five step-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Thursday at 11
a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Pacific Grove.

Rogerlee Merle Laning, a 60-year Monterey County resident, died Dec. 3
at his Carmel Valley home. He was 66. Born March 8, 1932, in Sutton,
Neb., he had served in the Navy and was a model airplane enthusiast.
Mr. Laning owned an auto repair garage in the Monterey area, and also
worked as a building inspector and a parttime college instructor. He
enjoyed hunting and was a coin collector and dealer for 60 years. Mr.
Laning is survived by a son in Southern California. His wife, Eleanor,
died in 1990. No services will be held. The Paul Mortuary is in charge
of arrangements.

County resident, died in December 1998, at his Carmel Valley home. He

SEASIDE - Mary Hlavachek, age 78 passed away after a brief illness on
Thursday July 8, 2004 at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
She was born to Douglas ad Alva Mae Lockwood in Onawa, Iowa. She was
the youngest of seven children. In 1943 Mary moved to San Francisco
California and worked in the Richmond shipyards during World War II,
where she was employed as a ship builder to assist in the war endeavor.
In 1949 she moved to Monterey and worked in the canneries with her
mother and sister in law. Mary was employed on Cannery Row during the
period when it was a bustling canning industry. She continued to work
in the remaining canneries in Sand City as well as in her sister's
office at Tri - City Real Estate until her retirement. Mary loved
embriodery, collecting coins, and piggy banks, traveling, reading,
walking and root beer. She loved to laugh, and she took advantage of
every opportunity to help the less fortunate. Mary attended the
Shoreline Community Church, and spent time at the Oldemeyer Center in
Seaside, and was also a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants.
Mary was preceded in death by her best friend and soul mate of sixteen
years, Walter Taylor. Mary leaves to cherish her memory six children,
Letta Hlavachek (George Hirtz), Becky Self, Patricia Von Deas (Peter
Sarafolean), Sheldon Deas ( Mycell Deas), Rose Hlavachek (Jimmy
Manabe), and Ann Alabanese - Freeman (Randall Freeman), five
grandchildren: James Self, Dillon Thomas, Laurie Albanese - Schroder
(Robert Schroder), and Robert Albanese, Sheldon Deas Jr., and great -
grandaughter Deborah Roseann Schroder, sister Gail Szafran (Walt),
brothers Charles and James Lockwood, cousin Shirley Vargas, and many
extended family members. Mary Olive Lockwood Hlavachek will be fondly
remembered by all those whose lives she touched and enriched.

William (Bill) H. Patterson died of cancer on March 1, 1999, at age 66,
at the Veteran's Hospital in Spokane, Washington. He was born on June
26, 1932, in Pacific Grove, California. He grew up on the Monterey
Peninsula and attended schools in Pacific Grove and Seaside. He and his
family were residents of Ritzville, Washington, for the past 31 years,
and prior to that lived in Spokane, Washington for 14 years. Bill was a
U.S. Air Force veteran, and was stationed for one year in Japan during
the Korean conflict, where he was made Staff Sergeant, and served the
rest of his tour at the SAC Base in Spokane, Washington. There he met
and married Joan, his wife of 45 years, and raised a large family in
Ritzville he owned and operated Patterson's Appliance Repair for over
20 years, and a small diner and a coffee shop. He is survived by his
wife Joan Patterson of Ritzville, WA, and nine children; foster son
Paul Provinsal of Vancouver, WA, son, Ralph Patterson of Spokane, WA,
Richard Patterson of Puyallup,WA, Gerald Patterson of Spokane, WA,
Jeffery Patterson of Spokane, WA, and Daryl Patterson of Moses Lake,
WA, and daughters, Judy Rand of Hauser Lake, Idaho, Doreen Ballard of
Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Michelle Patterson of Coeur d'Alene,
Idaho, and 22 grandchildren. He is also survived by four brothers,
Robert Patterson of Hermiston, OR, Howard Patterson of Seaside, CA,
Harold Patterson of Pacific Grove, CA, and Wayne Patterson of Pacific
Grove; and two sisters, Margaret Casteen of Redding, CA, Rose Mello of
Carmel, CA, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was such a great guy
and he had a really neat sense of humor! He is greatly missed but his
memory will live on in our hearts.

resident, who died Dec. 29 in San Rafael. He was 56. A native of
Monterey, he was born May 25, 1932, and lived in the area until he was
17. Then he entered the U.S. Navy, serving from 1949 to 1953. A
communications engineer, he developed, owned and operated Cherokee
Communication in Santa Rosa. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign
Wars and the Lake View Chapel in Eagle Lake. Survivors include hi wife,
Ethel of San Rafael; his mother, Frances Selbicky Greene of Scotts
Valley; four daughters, Deborah Goodwin and Stephanie Mahoney of
Garland, Texas, Kelly Selbicky Travis of Escondido, and Leslie Selbicky
of Fremont; two sisters, Margaret Selbicky Stewart of Monterey and
Sandra Selbicky of Pacific Grove, and three brothers, Neil, Michael and
Jon, all of Pacific Grove. Also surviving are three grandsons and many
nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorial contributions to the

Gerald Frederick Smith April 25, 1931 - Sept. 23, 2003 Smitty, a
resident of Atwater for 30 years was born in Santa Clara, Calif. on
April 25, 1931. He passed away at the age of 72 on Sept. 23, 2003 at
his home in Atwater. He retired from Foster Farms after 30 years of
employment with them. Smitty had a strong passion for golf and enjoyed
making golf clubs and repairing them. Smitty was preceded in death by
two daughters; Vicki Lyn Goulart and Toni Gail Childers, he is survived
by his loving devoted wife of 53 years; Audrey Smith of Atwater, his
daughter; Christi Erwin of Delhi, Calif., one sister; Jackie Hughes of
Yreka, Ca., two brothers; Donald Smith and Patrick Walker both of

Nov. 4, 1932 - June 29, 2005 Barbara Sue Tryon Wright, 72, of Gustine
died Wednesday at San Luis Convalescent Hospital, Newman. Mrs. Wright
was a native of Seattle and lived in Gustine 15 years. She was a
29-year employee of the Pacific Grove public school system; she was a
library clerk. She was a member of the Newman Lions Club and before
that she belonged to the Lioness Club from 1987 to 1992. She is
survived by her husband, Donald R. Wright of Gustine; children, Steven
R. Wright of Yuba City and Dona Bates of Monterey; brother, Michael
Tryon of Monterey; sister, Claudia Edelman of Bullhead City, Ariz.; and
five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A graveside service
will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery,
Santa Nella. Hillview Funeral Chapel, Gustine, in charge of

72 years. She was born February 21, 1932 to Gordy and Elsie Watson in
Oklahoma. Winnie was raised in Pacific Grove and graduated from Pacific
Grove High School. She later moved to Fremont, California and raised 2
daughters and worked for Mt. Eden Nursery in Hayward for more than 40
years. During her short retirement she was able to travel and spend
time with her family. She is survived by her 2 daughters, Diane Anest
of San Antonio, Texas, Debbie Peterson of Sutter Creek; 4
grandchildren, Trisha Boldra and her husband, Michael, Kyle Anest,
Grant Peterson, Kimberly Peterson; brother, Jack Watson; 2 sisters,
Katherine Silva and Beverly Flynn. She was preceded in death by her
mother, Elsie Watson and sister, Colleen Evans. There will be no
services at the family's request. Inurnment will be private. In lieu
memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Therapy and Research
Center Development Office, 7979 Wurzbach, San Antonio, TX 78229.

1950 Kenneth Douglas Zug (63)

K. Douglas Zug, 63, a former Pacific Grove resident, died Wednesday at
his home in Menlo Park. Born July 20, 1932, in Monterey, he had lived
in San Mateo County for the past six years. Mr. Zug was an English
teacher at Pacific Grove High School in 1961. He also taught at Oakdale
High School and Delano High School. He graduated from Pacific Grove
High School in 1950's the class valedictorian. He received a Monterey
Rotary Scholarship to Monterey Peninsula College, where he was student
body president. Mr. Zug received a bachelor's degree in speech and
English from the University of California at Berkeley and a master's
degree in speech and English from the University of Oregon. He served
as an ensign in the Navy during the Korean War. Mr. Zug is survived by
his father, Kenneth E. of Marina; a son, Kenneth L. of Eugene, Ore.; a
sister, Joan Zug of Marina; and two grandchildren. At his request, no
services will be held. Cremation will be at the little Chapel
by-the-Sea, followed by the scattered of ashes at sea. The Paul
Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

K. Douglas Zug, 63, ('50 & faculty, of Menlo Park, CA, died April
1996) was his class valedictorian 50. Later he was the student body
president at Monterey Peninsula College. After graduating from UC
Berkeley he taught English at PG High for a year, and also taught at
Oakdale and Delano high schools. Survivors include, his father Ken Zug
'27, and sister Joan Zug '53, both of Marina, CA.
