Vernon "Barney" Baxter, an Apple Valley resident, died Aug 13 in
Victorville. He was 80. Born Feb. 28, 1918 in Fort Oglethorpe, GA, he
lived in Salinas from 1934 until the mid-1940s (graduating from Pacific
Grove High School in 1936) and returned to the city for a few years
after World War II. He lived in Apple Valley for 29 years. Mr. Baxter
served for 30 years in the Air Force, and retired as a Master Sargeant.
He was a past Exalted Ruler of 1877, Victorville Lodge of the
Victorville Elks and a member of the Apple Valley Moose Lodge. He is
survived by his wife, Verda; a son, Roger of Annapolis, MD.; a sister,
Thelma Sanders of Dallas; three brothers, Carl Baxter of Salinas,
Herbert Baxter of Santa Clara, and Richard Baxter of Redding; and two
grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the
Victorville Elks Lodge, 14041 Hesperia Rd., Victorville.

Vernon Baxter, 80 ('36, of Apple Valley, CA, d Aug 1998) died in
Victorville, CA, member of a well known Army family, his late father
was a band-master with the 11th Cavalry at the Monterey Presidio. He is
survived by his wife Verda, a son Roger of Annapolis, a sister Thelma
Sanders '38 of Dallas; three brothers, Carl '42 of Salinas, Herb
'43 of Santa Clara and Richard '47 of Redding.

Elsie Catherine Bisnett Smith, ('36 of Concord, CA passed away after
a long illness Jan 1, 2000 in Concord. She graduated from PGHS in 1936
at age 16. She went on to University of California at Berkeley and
graduated Phi Beta Capa in 1940. Elsie married her sweetheart, Kimble
Smith PGHS '34 and they had two sons, Kim of Fairfield and Kevin of
Concord. The couple would have celebrated their 60th wedding
anniversary this coming June. In addition to the above survivors and
their families, she leaves her brother, Bernard Bisnett '40 of
Magalia, CA.

Lorraine Margaret Borchers Castanos, 85, a retired businesswoman, died
Nov. 22 at the Hospice House in Monterey. She was born June 3, 1918, in
San Jose, attended Pacific Grove schools and graduated from Heald
Business College. She had lived in Pacific Grove since 1930, where she
was co-owner of Sunset Patio Supply. Mrs. Castanos was a volunteer at
the St. Mary's-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church Thrift Shop, a past
president and life member of the Soroptomist Club of the Monterey
Peninsula and Beta Sigma Phi, a founding president of the Salvation
Army Women's Auxiliary, a member of the Ladies' Lions Club, and a
volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She and her husband, Everett, traveled
extensively before his death in 1990. She is survived by a daughter,
Lynn Altenburg, and a son, Robert Castanos, both of Pacific Grove; and
four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Delia
Olson, in October. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at
St. Mary's Church. The Paul Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The
family suggests that any memorial contributions be sent to the Pacific
Grove Fire Department Emergency Medical Equipment Fund.

Lorraine Borchers Castanos, 85, a retired businesswoman, died Nov 22nd
at Hospice House Monterey. A native of San Jose, she attended PG
Schools and graduated from Healds Business College. She and her late
husband Everett owned Sunset Patio Supply. She is survived by a son,
Robert '66 and a daughter Lynn Castanos Altenburg '61. Lorraine was
preceded in death by her daughter, Delia Ann Castanos Olson '70 in

1936 Clifford Higgins Coleman (78)

Clifford H. Coleman, 78, of Pebble Beach died Monday at Monterey
Convalescent Hospital. Born May 7, 1918, in Hanford, Mr. Coleman had
lived on the Monterey Peninsula since the age of 10. A graduate of
Pacific Grove High School, he was named the school's best athlete of
1936 and played on the football team that beat Carmel that year. Mr.
Coleman owned several businesses on the Peninsula over the years,
including a service station in Monterey and a tobacco shop in Carmel.
He also owned apartments on the Peninsula. He was a 40-year volunteer
for the Crosby/AT&T Golf Tournament, retiring only two years ago. A
member of the Monterey Peninsula Country Club, he was past president of
the Club's Seniors and had had seven holes-in-one. Mr. Coleman served
in the Marine Corps from 1940 to 1945. He is survived by hs wife of 56
years, Marion. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the
Little Chapel by the Sea. The Paul Mortuary is in charge of
arrangements. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be
sent to Monterey Convalescent Hospital, 735 Pacific St., Monterey
93940, or to the donor's favorite charity.

Clifford Coleman, 78, ('36 of Pebble Beach, CA died Dec. 23, 1996, at
Monterey Convalescent Hospital. A native of Hanford, Calif., Cliff had
lived on the Peninsula some 68 years. An outstanding athlete he was
named PGHS athlete of the year in 1936. He was a 40-year volunteer for
the Crosby-AT&T and had had seven holes-in-one! Over the years he had
owned several successful businesses and apartments. He is survived by
his wife of 56-years, Marion Gill Coleman '35.

Charleen Colvin Raney, 75, of Carmel died Thursday at the Hospice House
in Monterey. Mrs. Raney was born in Monterey on May 9, 1919, and grew
up in Pacific Grove. She graduated from Pacific Grove High School and
attended San Jose State College. She lived on the Monterey Peninsula
all her life. Mrs. Raney was a homemaker and a volunteer at the UNICEF
store in Carmel. She was also a supporter of Planned Parenthood, the
Salvation Army, the Carmel Red Cross and St. Anthony's Kitchen in San
Francisco. Her husband, Joseph, died in 1992. She is survived by a son,
Joseph Jr. of Carmel; a daughter, Sharon Raney of Sacramento; and a
sister, Margaret Colvin '45 of Carmel Valley. At. Mrs. Raney''
request, no services will be held. Following cremation at the Little
Chapel by-the-Sea, the ashes will be scattered at sea off Point Lobos.
The Paul Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family suggests
that any memorial contributions be sent to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box
1884, Monterey 93942.

Alberta Tanous. July 10, 1918 - September 9, 2005. MONTEREY - Our
beloved mother, Alberta Tanous, a member of one of Monterey's oldest
pioneer families, died on the morning of September 9, 2005. Her
husband, Robert Tanous, preceded her in death. She was a native of
Monterey and was the daughter of Louise Espinosa y De la Torre and
Albert De la Torre and a sixth generation member pf a family that dates
back to the founding of Monterey with the Portola Expedition. She was
the niece of the famous five Espinosa brothers (Professional Golfers).
Her great great great grandfather, Gabriel Espinosa came to California
with Father Junipero Serra on the Portola Expedition in 1769. Alberta
is directly related to many of the founding families of Monterey, CA,
including those of the Boronda, Martines, Amesquita, De la Torre,
Higuera, Castro, Cota, Lugo, Arceo and her heritage includes the first
people of the Monterey Bay Area and that of Catalina Espinosa, the
first bride of the Carmel Mission where the marriage was blessed by
Fray Junipera Serra. She was born July 10, 1918, in Monterey and lived
her whole life on the Monterey Peninsula. She traveled extensively to
Europe and other parts of the world that she loved. She was a Prominent
business woman, and owner of the well known Tradewinds Gift Shop, first
located on Fiskerman's Warf and then on Cannery Row. Many of the
employees that worked for Alberta had addressed her as "Mrs T" and
still did to this day. Even though she was retired, she worked part
time at Pacific Grove Hallmark store in Pacific Grove a few days a
week. She was dearly beloved mother of daughters, Sandra Stovall of
Monterey, Sharon Barr of Monterey, Pamela Tanous of Pacific Grove and
Deborah Scofield of La Vegas, NV, cherished sister of Delores Brooks,
devoted grandmother to Robert Stovall, Michele Gonet Rotter, Steven
Stovall, Michael Gonet and Amanda Artellan Tanous and grandmother to
Christopher Eichenberger. Beloved great grandmother to Torissa Stovall,
Paul Thomas Curatlo, Megan Rotter and David Rotter. Beloved aunt to
Mary Jo Rose, Patty Lou Sprinkles, Barbara Costanti, Rita Riedy, Gary
Tanous and many nieces and nephews. Celebration of the Memorial Mass
will be held at the Carmel Mission Basilica on Thursday, September 15,
2005 at 1:00 p.m.. There will be a Rosary at the Carmel Mission on
Wednesday, September 14, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. Alberta loved the Carmel
Mission and attended mass there every Sunday. Memorial Contributions
may be made to The Carmel Mission Restoration Fund, 3080 Rio Road,
Carmel, Ca 93923 in lieu of flowers. Alberta Tanous will be remembered
and missed by all who met and knew her. Her four daughters who loved
her very much will especially remember her. The Paul Mortuary in charge

Elizabeth P. Meagher Age 86, passed away November 10, 2004 in
Sacramento. Mrs. Meagher was born in China to parents who were
Methodist Missionaries. She grew up in Pacific Grove, CA and graduated
from UC San Francisco Nursing School. After marrying, she and her
husband moved to Washington D.C. They later returned to California
where she settled with her family in San Jose and continued on with her
nursing career. They retired to the Sacramento area in 1989. She was
very involved in the Episcopal Church where her husband was a member of
the clergy and she founded the Order of Sisters of Bethany. Together
they enjoyed and were very involved in community musical theater. She
is survived by her son Robert (Anne) Meagher and daughter Marilyn (Jim)
Riffel. She also leaves behind her brother Richard Draper,
grandchildren Katie Mark and Anna Meagher and great-grandchildren Owen
and Caroline Mark. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband of 58
years, Frederic W. A Memorial Service will be planned at a later date.

Draper Meagher 86, born in China, and died Nov 10, 2004 in Sacramento
CA. Her parents were Methodist Missionaries in China, before moving to
Pacific Grove. Her father taught chemistry at Monterey High and her
late husband Fred '34 preceded her in death in 2002.

Carmel - Betty D. Schaeffler, 76, of Carmel died of complications
from lung cancer Sunday at Hospice House. Born Nov. 9, 1919, in Salt
Lake City, Mrs. Schaeffler was a graduate of Stanford University. She
moved to Carmel 38 years ago from Denver. She was a homemaker and
writer, producing articles for various sports magazines. She is
survived by a son, Jimmy of Salinas; and three grandchildren. Memorial
services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Little Chapel
by-the-Sea in Pacific Grove. Inurnment will be at El Carmelo Cemetery.
The Paul Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family suggests
that any memorial contributions be sent to the Epilepsy Foundation of
America.

Flo Retta Strang, 78, a former resident of Pacific Grove, died July 13,
at Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa. Born Oct. 31, 1917, in Zieback
County, South Dakota, she moved with her family to California in the
1920s. She lived in Paso Robles for two years before settling in
Pacific Grove, where she stayed until she moved to WindChime assisted
living residence in Napa in 1993. Mrs. Strang graduated from Pacific
Grove High School in 1936 and went on to cosmetology school, working as
a beautician in Carmel. She later worked for the Monterey County Health
Department until her retirement in 1973. She was a member of the
Pacific Grove chapter of Beta Sigma Phi and the Pacific Grove High
Alumni Association. She was a 57-year member of the Monterey Peninsula
Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, in which she held several
offices, including that of pianist. She also painted, sewed and
knitted. At WindChime, she was active on the residents board. She is
survived by a daughter, Toni Kennedy of Napa; a son, Nick Guzzi of
Pacific Grove; and five grandchildren. Memorial services will be held
at 11 a.m. Friday at the Little Chapel by-the-Sea in Pacific Grove.
Inurnment will be at El Carmelo Cemetery. The Paul Mortuary is in
charge of arrangements. The family suggests that any memorial
contributions be made in her name to the donor's favorite charity.

Flo Retta Goodale Strang, 78 ('36 of Napa, CA, d July 1996) died in
July at Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa. Her husband, the late
Jimmy Strang, '34, was a gifted artist. A native of South Dakota she
moved with her family to PG in the 1920s. After high school Flo studied
cosmetology, worked as a beautician and then worked for the Monterey
County Health Department until retirement. She was a 57-year member of
the Order of Eastern Star and held several Star offices including
pianist.

Frank Holt Jr., a decorated military veteran from San Jose who devoted
much of his life to promoting the armed services, has died at the age
of 84.A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, Mr. Holt, a
lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, was Santa Clara County's civil
defense coordinator from 1961 until his retirement in 1981. He died at
his San Jose home on June 30.Born in San Jose in 1918, Mr. Holt moved
to Pacific Grove as a youngster and attended high school there before

HOLT, Jr., LTC Frank Edward Passed away peacefully at his residence in
San Jose, CA on June 30, 2003. LTC Holt was a native of San Jose born
on December 29, 1918. He attended schools in Pacific Grove and
graduated from San Jose State University in 1941. LTC Holt was very
proud of his 20 years service to his country serving in the US Army
Infantry during which time he was awarded CIB with star and Purple
Heart doing combat in WWII and Korea. He was Civil Defense Coordinator
for Santa Clara County for 20 years retiring in 1981. LTC Holt was an
active Mason with Golden Rule Lodge #479, San Jose Scottish Rite, Kerak
Shrine and the Santa Clara County Employees Square and Compass Club,
Sigma Chi, (Founding Member of Local Collegate Chapter) Reserve
Officers Association, Peninsula Retired Officers Club and Combat
Infantrymen's Association. His adored wife, Ina Mae Holt, of San Jose;
his cherished children Marica Hollingsworth and Cassandra Ravenscroft
of San Jose, Stanley Holt of Federal Way, WA, and James Holt of
Montclair, VA; 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, survives
him. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 12, 2003 at 1:00
p.m. at Masonic Center, 2500 Masonic Dr., San Jose. Burial will be at

San Jose, Lt Colonel Holt was a native of San Jose born on December 29,
1918. He attended schools in Pacific Grove and graduated from San Jose
State University in 1941. Lt Col Holt was very proud of his 20 years
service to his country serving in the US Army Infantry during which
time he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge with star and Purple
Heart during combat in WWII and Korea He is survived by his wife, Ina
Mae Holt, of San Jose; children Marcia Hollingsworth and Cassandra
Ravenscroft of San Jose, Stanley Holt of Federal Way, WA, and James
Holt of Montclair, VA. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.

1936 Nakakiyo "Mickey" Ichiuji (76)

Mickey Nakakiyo Ichijui, 76, who owned a Pacific Grove shoe repair
business for 50 years, died Friday at his Pacific Grove home. Mr.
Ichiuji, who was born in Monterey on Sept. 28, 1917, and was a graduate
of Pacific Grove High School, died of cancer. He owned the Grove Shoe
Hospital for 50 years and was also a mutual fund sales representative.
He was one of the first Nisei elders of the El Estero Presbyterian
Church. He was treasurer of the Northern California Japanese Church
Federation and was a past president of the Japanese-American Citizens
League. Mr. Ichiuji was also a Rotary Club member and belonged to the
Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce. In addition, he served on the
Monterey Peninsula Salvation Army advisory board and the Pacific Grove
Beautification Committee. He is survived by his wife, Edith; two
daughters, Drs. Mary Ichiuji-Stolz of Santa Monica and Nancy
Ichiuji-Wooding of San Francisco; and a son, Dr. John Ichiuji of
Danville. Friends may visit at the Paul Mortuary on Wednesday from noon
to 5 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the El Estero Presbyterian
Church on Wednesday at 7:40 p.m. Burial will be at the Monterey City
Cemetery. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be sent
to the El Estero Presbyterian Church or the Monterey Peninsula
Salvation Army.

Mickey Ichiuji passed away from cancer. A cheerful person - as always
to the end - he will be vividly recalled by hundreds of Alumni as he
worked as a shoe repairman for decades in Pacific Grove. He took over
the shop from his father and worked until retirement in 1984. During
WWII the Ichiuji family voluntarily moved to Reedley after war broke
out and then were force evacuated to Poston, AZ. His brother Joe, Paul
and Harry served in the armed services and Mickey was on the list to be
called when WWII ended. Mickey (his first grade teacher couldn't
pronounce Nakakiyo and dubbed him Mickey - and it stuck all his life)
worked during the war in the Midwest. After the war the family returned
to Pacific Grove and reopened their shoe repair place, Pacific Grove
Shoe Hospital. Mickey served o many committees in Pacific Grove,
including a Board of Director member of PGHSAA from 1981 through 1990.

1936 Donald Martin Mammen (81)

Donald M. Mammen, a business owner, died Thursday at Salinas Vallely
Memorial Hospital. He was 81. Born Feb. 23, 1918, in San Francisco, he
had lived in Salinas for 63 years. Mr. Mammen graduated from Pacific
Grove High School in 1936, and from Salinas Junior College (now
Hartnell College) in 1939. For 35 years he owned and operated various
dry cleaners in Salinas and Hollister, including Don's One Hour and
Wayne's Laundry, and later opened dry cleaners in Marina, Paso Robles
and King City. Mr. Mammen was a member of the Salinas Elks Lodge and

Salinas. Mr. Mammen is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ferne; four
daughters, Marcia Terry of Salinas, Karen Shorsher and Barbara Mammen,
both of San Jose, and Leslie Alvarado of Templeton; a son, Larry Mammen
of San Jose; and 13 grandchildren. Graveside services will be privately
held at the Garen of Memories. A memorial service will take place at 2
p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church. Struve and Laporte
Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. The family suggests that

Donald M. Mammen, 81 ('36, of Salinas, CA, d April 1999), died at
Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. A native of San Francisco and
following graduation from PGHS he moved to Salinas. He was a 1939
graduate of Salinas Junior College (now Hartnell College). For 35 years
he owned and operated dry cleaners in Salinas and Hollister and later
opened dry cleaners in marina, Paso Robles and King City. A member of
Salinas Elks Lodge, a past president of Rotary North East in Salinas,
he was also active in other organizations. He is survived by his wife

Dolores N. Modena, 71, of Pacific Grove, a retired bookkeeper, died
Saturday [Dec, 39] at home. Mrs. Modena was born May 10, 1918, in
Jamestown, N.D. She grew up in Pacific Grove and graduated from Pacific
Grove High School with the Class of 1936. She lived in King City from
1945 to 1972 and returned to Pacific Grove after that to live until her
death. She was a bookkeeper with Continental Van Lines in Seaside and
retired in 1984. She was a member of the Seaside Business and
Professional Women's Club, and was a Red Cross volunteer for many
years and also a volunteer with the Community Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include a son, Stephen of King City; two daughters, Judith
Pratt of Salinas and Dalene Modena of King City; a sister, Dalene
Laughton of Monterey; five grandchildren; three great-grrandchildren;
and a niece and a nephew. Memorial services will be held Thursday at
1:30 p.m. in the Paul Mortuary Chapel. Cremation will be at the Little
Chapel by-the-Sea in Pacific Grove. The family suggests that any
memorial contributions be made to Special Olympics or to the donor's
favorite charity.

photo department, retiring in 1988. He is survived by wife Eileen,

School and worked in local banks until she retired from the Carmel
branch of Crocker Bank. She moved to the Sacramento area soon after to
be near friends and family. She is survived by her son, Charles Hunter
of St. George, Utah; a brother, John Orchard of Auburn; a sister,
Margaret Bradley of Union City; one niece and several nephews, as well

a Carmichael Rest Home after a short illness due to cancer. A long time
PGHSAA member, she served in 1963 and 64 on our board of directors.

distinguished PG family. Her father and brother John having served the
PG Post Office for decades. She is survived by her son, Charles Hunter

George Ernest Raymond, 73, a retired building contractor and former
resident of Pacific Grove, died of heart failure in Fresno on Dec. 9. A
resident of Monterey County for 21 years, Mr. Raymond was born in San
Francisco on Oct. 31, 1917. He attended Pacific Grove schools until he
enlisted in the Marines, serving aboard the USS New York. Mr. Raymond,
who lived in Fresno for the last 52 years, began his business on the
Monterey Peninsula with his father, Ernest Raymond, a local contractor.
Involved in building many church and school facilities for the Catholic
Diocese of Fresno, Mr. Raymond was active with the church in the
restoration of missions throughout the state. He also built the first
flight simulator in Fresno. He is survived by two sons, Ernest of
Benicia and George of Wilton; three daughters, Jeanette Duck of Fresno,
Elaine Michaelson of San Jose and Elenor Holterman of Oakhurst; two
sisters, Mary Barter and Elsie Robinson, both of Pacific Grove; and 12
grandchildren. Funeral services have been held in Fresno. Belmont
Memorial park of Fresno was in charge of arrangements.

born to parents, Bertram and Janet (McCreath) Rogers on September 7,
1918 in Pacific Grove California. She died in Salem on February 13,
2005 at the age of 86. She graduated from Pacific Grove High School
where she met her husband, Charles M. Sutliff. He preceded her in death
in 1956. She had worked as a secretary at the Harbor Master's Office
in Monterey, Calif. and moved to Salem 13 years ago. She is survived by
daughter, Judith Sutliff of Salem; granddaughters, Natasha Davis of
Sacramento, Calif. and Tatiana Otterbine of Carson City, Nevada;
great-grandchildren, Matthew and Katie Otterbine; and brother, John
Woods of Carmel Valley, Calif. No services will be held at her request.

by her husband of 65 years, Col. Frank. E. Kirby (Ret.) of Novato; her
brothers, Richard Schwab of Sequim, Washington and Donald Schwab of Las
Vegas, Nevada; sister Kathleen Lewis of Seaside, California; her
children, Frank Kirby Jr. of Monument, Colorado; Carol Jacinto of
Springfield, Virginia, and Nansi Nuss of Phoenix, Arizona; six
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Margaret traveled
extensively across the United States and around the world with her
husband during his Air Force career, and lived in Novato for the past
36 years. At the end of WWII she took her children with her on the
first boatload of dependents to join her husband in Okinawa. Living in
a corrugated metal Quonset hut under primitive conditions, Margaret
became adept at steering her assigned jeep along muddy tracks and
around still fresh bomb craters. In later years Margaret got to enjoy
her passions for playing bridge, making book rugs for family and
friends, and singing out BINGO to win still another jackpot. She also
passed on her love for the opera to her children and grandchildren.
Friends are invited to attend a service to celebrate Margaret's life
at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday November 27, 2001, at the Church of Jesus Christ

Howard Bristow Van Deren, 71, of Pacific Grove, a photographer on the
Peninsula and in Salinas, died Sunday at St. Helena Hospital in Napa
County after being stricken at hs vacation home in Lakeport. Born on
Dec. 3, 1916, in Chico, Mr. Van Deren lived on the Peninsula most of
his life and was a photographer for 30 years, with studios in Pacific
Grove, Seaside, Salinas and Lakeport. When he was 8 years old, he
learned magic and later became a professional magician to pay his way
through school. He performed at the First Theater of California in
Monterey during the 1960s. Mr. Van Deren attended Pacific Grove schools
and graduated from Monterey High School in 1936. His memberships
included Pacific Grove Masonic Lodge No. 331; Ocean Spray chapter,
Order of the Eastern Star; and the Seaside Lions Club. He also was a
charter member of the Pacific Grove Kiwanis Club and a life member of
the Lions Eye Bank of San Francisco. An avid sailor, he was a member of
the Elkhorn and Monterey yacht clubs. Survivors include his wife,
Josephine; a son, harry Barclay of Gettysburg, Pa.; a daughter,
Charlotte Borwn of San Antonio, Texas; two grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at
the Paul Mortuary. Burial will follow in El Carmelo Cemetery. The

Thomas William van Ess of Wytheville, Va., died Monday in the Wythe
County Community Hospital. He was 79. He was born Oct. 22, 1919, in San
Francisco, Calif., to Thomas William van Ess Sr. and Rachael MacGowen
van Ess. Van Ess lived his first 11 years in Pukchin, North Korea,
where his father was the manager of a gold mining company. Following
graduation from Pacific Grove High School in California, he attended
St. Albans in Washington, D.C., and studied organ at Washington
Cathedral. Later he attended Pomona and Colorado Colleges and studied
organ. Van Ess completed work for a doctorate in Spanish at New York
University. He obtained the AAGO in organ and theory at the Cathedral
of St. John the Divine in New York City. He lived six years in Buenos
Aires, Argentina, where he worked as a Spanish-English translator in
the military attache's office in the American Embassy. He was active in
music as associate director and accompanist of the British-American
Mixed Chorus. He married Mary Eula Wrany Jan. 18, 1947, at St.
Saviour's in Argentina. They lived in New York City for 27 years. For
14 years, van Ess was an instructor of Spanish at Pace College in New
York City and Pleasantville, N.Y., and served as organist-choir
director for a number of churches, including Riverdale Presbyterian
Church at Riverdale-on-Hudson, N.Y., from 1948 to 1961. He performed
organ recitals and was a professional accompanist. Southern Music
Publishing Co. published more than 50 song lyrics van Ess translated
from Spanish to English. He prepared a Spanish translation of the
Lectionary and Liturgy for the United Presbyterian Church of the U.S.;
it was published in 1965. Crowell-Collier published "Basic Facts of
Spanish," a book van Ess prepared. In 1974, van Ess and his wife moved
from New York to Wytheville, Va., to manage Econo Lodge. They retired
in 1981. Van Ess was an organist and choir director at St. John's
Episcopal Church in Wytheville for 10 years until 1988, completing 50
years as a church musician. Survivors include his wife, Mary Wrany van
Ess, and his sister, Lee Louise Williams, Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Graveside memorial services will be 10 a.m. Monday in Memory Lane
Cemetery, Harrah. Barnett Funeral Home of Wytheville, Va., and Asa
Smith Funeral Service in Harrah are in charge of services.

1936 Kenneth Watts Ward (69)

Kenneth W. Ward, a consulting petroleum engineer and geologist, died of
cancer Monday in Japan. He was 69. Born Oct. 6, 1919, in Kansas, Mr.
Ward resided in Pacific Grove from 1930-37. He attended the Pacific
Grove Pine Street Elementary School and graduated from Pacific Grove
High School in 1937 [ed. 1936]. Mr. Ward was a 1944 graduate of the
Colorado School of Mines and was a registered professional engineer in
Texas, Louisiana and Canada. His first job in the oil industry was with
Chevron as a field engineer. During World War II, Mr. Ward served as a
captain in the Air Force. For 20 years, he worked at the Dallas, Texas,
consulting firm of De Golyer and McNaughton, serving as senior vice
president for the last five years. In 1973, he established a U.S.
subsidiary for Sulpatco Co. of Canada. Two years later he began an
independent consulting business. Mr. Ward was a member of several
professional organizations including the Petroleum Clubs of Dallas and
Shreveport. Mr. Ward was a member of several professional organizations

survived by two brothers, Leonard of La Canada and Robert of Yuma,

friends.

Verne Leslie Williams, a retired businessman and former Pacific Grove
councilman, died Saturday of cancer at his home. He was 81. Born Dec.
15, 1917, in Linday, he had lived in Pacific Grove for 75 years. Mr.
Williams graduated from Pacific Grove High School in 1936, earned a
bachelor's degree from San Jose State College (now University), and
fought in the Army during World War II, attaining the rank of Major. He
owned an insurance agency in Pacific Grove for more than 40 years,
retiring in 1987. Mr. Williams was also active in Pacific Grove
politics. He was a trustee of the city's library from 1947 until 1951,
and served on the City Council from 1951 to 1952 and from 1962 to 1965.
During his service to the council, Mr. Williams volunteered on various
boards and also served as traffic commissioner. "He studied the
issues like a surgeon would study anatomy," said Pacific Grove
Councilman Morris Fisher. "The city's lost a real senior statesman
for our community, but we live a better life here in Pacific Grove
because of him." Mr. Williams was a member of Sons in Retirement and
the Paisano Club. He was a former board member of the Visiting Nurse
Association and was a past member of the Kiwanis Club of Monterey. He
was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church in
Pacific Grove, and volunteered on the church's finance committee and
the Methodist Foundation's scholarship committee. Mr. Williams is
survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary; two sons, Dennis Williams of

July 17, 1918-December 6, 1999. Fred Witmer died December 6, 1999 at
his home in Watsonville. He was 81 years old. Mr. Witmer was born in
Modesto and was raised in Pacific Grove. After serving two eyars in the
U.S. Navy, spending his time in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Witmer joined
the telephone company in 1946. He came to Watsonville as manager of the
Pacific Bell office here in 1955 and continued until his retirement in
1979. Active in community affairs, Mr. Witmer was a past president of
the Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce, United Crusade, and the Rotary
Club, he also served on the Watsonville Personnel Commission for seven
years, as a chairman for two of those years, and as a member of the
Water Study Commission of three years. He had been a member of the Elks
Club, American Legion and the Pajaro Valley Club of the Telephone
Pioneers of America. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends,
and his dog "Sissy." He leaves two sons and daughters-in-law, Glen
A. and Diane Witmer of Watsonville, and David F. and Randy Witmer of
Redwood City, four grandchildren, Derek Witmer of Watsonville and Brent
Witmer of Santa Cruz, Wendy Wallace of Fairfield and Vanessa Witmer of
Redwood City, three great-grandchildren, Jordan and Jazmin Wallace of
Fairfield and Mikayla Witmer of Watsonville. Mr. Witmer also leaves two
brothers, Glen E. Witmer of San Jose and Merle Witmer of Pacific Grove.
His wife of 53 years, Virginia, died in 1993, and a son, Ward, died in
1973. Private family services will be held and burial will be at

Fred Witmer, 81 ('36 of Watsonville, CA d Dec 1999), died at his
Watsonville home Dec 6. A native of Modesto, he grew up in PG. He
served in the Navy in WWII and afterward worked for the telephone
company. In 1955 the family moved to Watsonville and he continued with
Pac Bell until retirement in 1979. Active in community affairs, he was
involved with the Elks Lodge, American Legion, and Pajaro Valley Club
of the Telephone Pioneer of America. He is survived by two sons, two
brothers, Glen E. '33 of San Jose and Merle '40 of PG. His wife
Virginia died in 1993.

William M. Workman of Hollywood, a former Pacific Grove resident,
musician, singer, musical director and actor, died May 10 in Santa
Monica at the age of 71. Born April 24, 1919 in Belfast, Northern
Ireland, he came to Pacific Grove as a child and attended Pacific Grove
schools. He was a graduate of College of the Pacific (now University of
the Pacific) in Stockton and held a doctorate in psychology from the
University of California at Berkeley. Mr. Workman was active in the
Santa Monica and Los Angeles areas as a musician, choral singer,
soloist, musical director and actor. He was instrumental in founding
the Santa Monica Light Opera, was a founder and charter member of the
Santa Monica Theater Guild, worked for KHJ-TV and KCOP-TV, and was host
from 1973 to 1986 of the radio show "Luncheon at Music Center" on
KFAX in Los Angeles, interviewing personalities from the music world,
opera and theater. He is the son of the late Fred W. Workman, a former
council man in Pacific Grove who wrote an opinion column in The Herald.
Mr. Workman is survived by two daughters, Caprice Walker and Louana
Seibold, both of Santa Monica; a son, Barry of Pasadena; a brother,
Ralph of Pacific Grove; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Private services have been held under the direction of the Cremation
Society of Southern California. The family suggests that any memorial
contributions be sent to the William M. Workman American Youth Symphony
Fund, c/o of Mehli Mehta, musical director, 343 Church Lane, Los
