Wayne E. Bennett passed away June 9, 1998 at Sacred Heart Hospital,
Spokane, Wash. He was 76 years old. Funeral services will be held on
Saturday, June 13, 1998 at 4 p.m. at Kayser's Chapel of Memories,
Moses Lake. Wayne was a Moses Lake resident since 1954. He served in
the Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1945 on a destroyer as an EMC
(T). Ribbons: American Theatre, Asiatic Pacific, President Unit
Citation, Good Conduct Stars authorized, Guadal Canal-Tulag Landings,
Capture and Defense of Guadal Canal Tassaforange; Consolidation of
Southern Solomon Island, New Georgia; Vila la Vella, La Velia, Tresury;
Boriganvilla, Bismark; Archipelago, New Guinea; Asiatic-Pacific Raids
1944; Marianas Operation 1944; Okinawa and Southern Ryukus. He owned
and operated the Sportsman's Tavern for over 30 years. His outgoing
personality earned him many friends. He will be greatly missed by his
family and friends. Wayne loved all sports and enjoyed fishing and
hunting. He especially loved to listen to and go to the High School
wrestling and football games for the past 30 years or so. He is
survived by his wife, Lorraine; sons, Gary, Marc, John and wife Diane;
grandchildren, Josh, Lisa and Johna; great-grandson, Elija; numerous
loving nieces and nephews; loving sister-in-law, Margaret Matthews;

Wayne Eldon Bennett, 76, ('39, of Moses Lake, WA, d June 1998) was a
native of Lingle, WY and he and his family moved to PG in the mid 20s.
Wayne attended grammar and high school in PG. He was an excellent
athlete and competed and lettered successfully in all sports. Wayne
worked in the building trades at Fort Ord and Camp Roberts before the
war. He and Bob Hyler '40, on a whim, drove to San Francisco and
enlisted in the Navy right after Pearl Harbor. Wayne served in the
Pacific Theater on the USS Lardner, a destroyer. Their ship anchored
next to the battleship Missouri during the War Ending Ceremonies in
Tokyo Bay at the end of WWII. Following the war he worked for Bell
Magazine Agency, then a liquor distributor and was transferred to Moses
Lake in 1954. He settled there for life. He quit the liquor business
and then bought and operated the Sportman's Tavern in Moses Lake for
decades and retired in 1988. An avid fisherman and hunter he often
hunted and fished in Alaska as well as Washington, Idaho, Wyoming and
California. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lorraine; three
sons, John and Gary of Alaska, and Marc of Moses Lake; and numerous
grandchildren.

Ralph Long Bodine, 47, died this morning in a local hospital. While he
had been under medical care for some time, his death was unexpected. He
was born April 17, 1918, in Idaho. A veteran of Army service during
World War II, Mr. Bodine was a plumber by occupation. He was a member
of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union, Local No. 62, of Monterey. With
his wife, Pauline, he made his home at 201 Crocker Ave., Pacific Grove.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a son, Charles Ralph Bodine of
Pacific Grove; his mother, Mrs. Eliza Arnold of Pacific Grove; a
sister, Mrs. Idona Dixon of Escondido; a half-sister, Mrs. Betty Glenn
of Salt lake City, Utah; a brother, Harvey Bodine of San Lorenzo; and a
half-brother, Richard Arnold of Seaside. Funeral services are pending
at the Paul Mortuary and will be announced later.

Evelyn Sarah Colburn Wood passed away at 79 after a short stay at
Saylor Lane Healthcare Center on March 3, 2000, peacefully, with loved
ones present continually until her passing. A 35-year resident of
Citrus Heights, she was preceded in death by her father Willard, mother
Ada, and sister Doris of Pacific Grove. She leaves two beloved
daughters who will miss her very much and think of her often, Patricia
and Lesly; an adored brother, Bill, who was deeply devoted to her and
whom she cherished and relied upon all her life; 3 grandchildren she
loved dearly and loving friends who were supportive of her in her times
of need. A native Californian, she was raised in Pacific Grove which
she loved to visit often. As a military bride she lived all over the
United States on Air Force bases until retirement with her former
husband to Sacramento in 1964. She worked many years in the emergency
rooms at Mercey General and Mercy San Juan hospitals before retiring.
She was very active in many senior groups and loved to travel,
especially to Tahoe and Modesto to see her family, and all over the
Sierra Nevada foothills and Trinity County, where she loved to camp and
pan for gold and appreciate the outdoors. She was an avid gardener and
maintained a beautiful rose garden at her home, and a genealogy buff
who traced her family roots back to John Brewster of the Mayflower. At
her request, no formal services will be held and cremation arranged by
Nicoletti Funeral Home will be followed by private services in Pacific
Grove. Remembrances may be made to a favorite charity.

Benjamin Shiffer Culala, whose nickname was Lucky, died Sunday in
Pompano Beach, Fla. He was 79. He was born June 19, 1920 in San
Francisco and grew up in Salinas before entering the Navy during World
War II. He retired from the Navy after 25 years and worked for W.R.
Holman in Pacific Grove for 25 years before moving to Florida. Mr.
Culala is survived by his wife, Caroline Martinez Culala of Monterey;
four daughters, Sara Byrne of Big Sur, Annette Groves of Pacific Grove,
Dawn Marlin of Benbrook, Texas, and Mary Breton of Pompano Beach, Fla.;
five sons, Benjamin Culula Jr. of Turlock, Tom Culala of Olathe, Kan.,
Mikeal Culala of Grover Beach, Scott Culala of Monterey and Michael
Culala of Galveston, Texas; 25 grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Oct.
25 at Mission Memorial Park in Seaside. The family suggests that any

Henri A. Culp, a retired electrical engineer, died Wednesday at Hospice
House in Monterey. He was 76. Born Jan. 29, 1922, in Pacific Grove, he
was a lifetime resident of the city and graduated in 1941 [1939, ed.]
from Pacific Grove High School. Mr. Culp served in the U.S. Coast Guard
during World War II and worked for 41 years for Pacific Gas and
Electric Co. He was a past member of the Pacific Grove Planning
Commission, a former volunteer fireman with the city's fire
department, and a parishoner at St. Angela's Catholic Church. He is
survived by his wife, Lucy; a daughter, Linda Chaney of Pacific Grove;
a son, Arthur Culp of Redwood City; four grandchildren; and a
great-grandchild. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at
the Paul Mortuary. Inurnment will be at El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific

David E. Hibbard, 68, of Salinas, a retired schoolteacher, died Tuesday
morning of cancer at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. Born Oct. 2,
1921, in Oklahoma City, Okla., he had lived in Salinas since 1954 and
was a member of Sons in Retirement, the California Teachers
Association, Northminster Presbyterian Church of Salinas and the Toro
Park Group. A graduate of Pacific Grove High School, he received a
bachelor of arts degree from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth,
Texas, and a master's degree and teacher's credential from San Jose
State University. Mr. Hibbard was a Navy veteran of World War II,
serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lexington in the South Pacific.
He taught for seven years in Santa Cruz and came to Salinas High School
in 1954, then taught in the social studies department at North Salinas
High School from 1959 until his retirement in 1987. Mr. Hibbard is
survived by his wife, Elizabeth; a daughter, Carole E.H. Smoot of
Fresno; a brother, Charles of Morgan Hill; a sister, Ailene, and his
father, Edward, both of Hood River, Ore. Memorial services will be held
Saturday at 11 a.m. at Northminister Presbyterian Church. Cremation has
been held at Garden of Memories Cemetery under the direction of Struve
& Laporte Funeral Chapel. The family prefers that any memorial

Mary Ellen Wahl, 70, a homemaker, died of cancer yesterday at her home
in Pacific Grove. Born Jan. 13, 1922, in San Jose, Mrs. Wahl, a fourth
generation Californian, was the descendant of Uriah Wood, the first
white man to settle in Los Banos in 1859. She moved to Pacific Grove at
an early age, attending Robert Down School and graduating from Pacific
Grove High School in 1939. She moved to Los Angeles and attended Los
Angeles City College. While singing professionally in 1941, she met her
husband, Gene, and following his return from the South Pacific theater
of World War II, they were married in Pacific Grove. She accompanied
her husband on numerous stateside assignments and to Alaska and Hawaii
during his 30-year career in the Air Force. An accomplished quilter,
Mrs. Wahl won numerous awards for her work during her years on the East
Coast. The couple returned to Pacific Grove permanently in 1984. In
addition to her husband, she leaves two daughters, Susan Tomkin of
Tryon, N.C., and Katherine Wahl-Alexander of Bellmore, Long Island,
N.Y.; and a grandson. No services will be held. The Paul Mortuary is in
charge of cremation arrangements and her ashes will be scattered at

Elyse Schliep Hoggren Ukiah Valley Mortuary is handling the care and
arrangements for Elyse Hoggren, age 56, who passed away on Sunday, Aug.
3, 2003, at Ukiah Valley Medical Center following a long illness
complicated by cancer. Elyse and her first husband, Carter Lee Schliep,
lived many years on Branscomb Road in Laytonville, where they built
homes in the area and raised Arabian horses. Their daughter April was
born and raised there. After Carter passed away in 1992, Elyse became a
proud 7-year star cashier at Wal-Mart in Ukiah where, in 1998, she met
her soon-to-be husband, Eugene Hoggren. They were married in 1999 in
Las Vegas, Nev., and made their home in Redwood Valley. She was a
talented creator of cut-glass artwork, and during her life she was able
to travel extensively, living several years on Maui and traveling to
the Caribbean. Elyse and Gene traveled thousands of miles in their
motor home and spent numerous happy times on the coast enjoying being
by the ocean. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 4 years, Eugene
Hoggren of Redwood Valley; daughter April Rivera; mother Monica
Kitchell of Willits; and grandchildren Travis and Kara McCaffrey, and
Mae Johns; as well as many Schliep relatives of Bend, Ore., on her
first husband's side, who were a big part of her life; and her Wal-Mart
buddy's, who were her daily joy. Visitation and viewing will be
Thursday, Aug. 7, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Ukiah Valley Mortuary, 195 Low

March 5, at the Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus. He was born
March 10, 1922 in Pacific Grove and had been a resident of Mount Vernon
for 53 years. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had
been employed at Cooper-Bessemer Co. in Mount Vernon for 23 years and
retired from American Davidson after 10 years of employment. He was a
member of the Mount Vernon Moose Lodge and the Veterans of Foreign Wars
in Mount Vernon. Surviving his wife of 53 years, Kathryn "Kay"
(Bell) Phillips; two sons, Mark William (Marsha) Phillips of Mount
Vernon and Matt Steven (Debbie) Phillips of Dewey, AZ; two daughters,

Col. Shelden L. (Tommy) Thompson, USA (Ret), passed away on Friday,
June 6, 2003 at the age of 82. He was a P.O.W. during WWII, serving
with the 101st Airborne, retiring after 30 years. Tommy was also a
well-known watercolor artist in San Antonio for the past 20 years. He
is survived by his daughters, Valerie Larson, Leslie Maple, Patricia
Glenesk, Tomi Dominguez; stepson, Bryan Callaghan; six grandchildren;
three step grandchildren and sister, Suzanne Ensslin. Graveside
Services will be held on Friday, June 13, 2003, 10:00 A.M, at Ft. Sam
Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to
San Antonio Watercolor Group Scholarship Fund, c/o Jeff Prestridge, 303

Margaret Johanne "Peggy" (Uzzell) Malloway

Johanne "Peggy" Malloway, a longtime Monterey resident, died
Tuesday at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. She was 77.
Born Oct. 16, 1921, in Hanford, she graduated from Monterey High School
and had been a resident of the city ever since. Mrs. Malloway worked at
the Defense Language Institute during World War II. She was active in
the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Monterey. A devoted
homemaker, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She also
enjoyed taking rides along the coast and listening to country music.
Mrs. Malloway is survived by two daughters, Karen Munckton of Salinas
and Scharden Eggertsen of Ventura; two sons, John Malloway of Seaside
and Geoff Malloway of Monterey; and nine-grandchildren. Her husband of
48 years, Robert, died in 1990. At her request, no services will be
held. The Paul Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

George Waago, died in San Mateo, CA, June 10, 1996. Long time San Mateo
resident he was 77. Father of Robert Waago and Claire Bea Sauer of San
Jose and Mary Ann Hill of Clovis. Grandfather of Christian, Michael and
Andrew Waago, Aaron and Brandon Hill and Alex Sauer. Loving brother of
the late Gus Waago. George Waago was born in Mesa AZ on March 4, 1919.
Moved to Pacific Grove in the 1930's and graduated from Pacific Grove
High School in 1939. He served in WWII as a photographer in the US
Navy. Married Mary (Micell) Waago of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and
moved back to San Francisco. Mary Waago passed away in December 1995 in
San Jose. He was a carpenter for 5 years, and then opened Waago Studio,
a long time photography studio on 25th Ave. in San Mateo. He later
returned to Carpenters Union Local #217 to complete 20 years as a
carpenter and then retired in the late 70's. In retirement his
interests involved photography and collecting memorabilia, art &
antiques. Graveside services will be conducted Monday, June 17, 1996 at
Skylawn Cemetery, Hwy 35 at Hwy 92 San Mateo at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements
by the Sneider & Sullivan Funeral Home, San Mateo. Donations to
favorite charity preferred.

George "Bob" Waago, 77 ('39 of San Mateo, CA, d June 1996) died
of a heart attack June 10th. A native of Mesa, AZ, the family moved to
PG in the 1930s. A US Navy photographer in WWII he married Mary Micell,
who passed away in 1995. Bob was a carpenter for years and for decades
he operated a photo studio in San Mateo. After Retirement in the 70s
his interests included photography, art and antiques. He never forgot
his warm memories of life in PG.

April 8, 1919-Sept. 27, 2005 Ivy Katherine Brunner, 86, of Imperial
Beach died Tuesday. She was born in Lodi. Survivors include her
daughters, Ivy Sayers and Katherine Bass; sons, Frank Brunner and John
Brunner; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services: 1
p.m. today, Nestor United Methodist Church, 1120 Nestor Way, San Diego.
Interment: Glen Abbey Memorial Park, 3838 Bonita Road, Bonita.

Ivy Katherine Brunner, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother
and friend to all, died peacefully at early daybreak September 27,
2005. Born in Lodi, California in 1919 she was the youngest daughter of
Neill and Katherine Watson. She grew up in Pacific Grove, California,
where she met her Navy pilot husband, Frank D. Brunner Jr. After
traveling with her family to multiple military bases, she took up
residence with her family in 1950 in Imperial Beach, CA. Ivy worked for
the South Bay Union School district as a secretary for 24 years. Her
love of sports, gardening, and birds affected every aspect of her life.
She was a member of the Audubon Society and the English Rose Garden
where she would plant and chart the growth of new roses. Ivy was an
active member of Nestor United Methodist Church as well as a member and
speaker for Aglow. Ivy's gentle spirit, her loving and caring ways will
be missed by all who knew her. This quality defined her to friends and
family. We know that she is at peace with the Lord, looking down on us
from Heaven, reunited with her husband who preceded her in death, her
mother, and loved ones. Ivy is survived by sons Frank D. Brunner III
and John J. Brunner, daughters Ivy L. Sayers and Kathy A. Bass, 17
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Services were held at
Nestor United Methodist Church on Friday, September 30th. In lieu of
flowers, a memorial fund has been set up through Nestor United
Methodist Church and you may donate to The United Methodist Church

Wanda E. (Wiley) Neff

Wanda E. Neff, 74, a Pacific Grove, a homemaker, died Monday at Hospice
House in Monterey. Born Aug. 18, 1921, in Dallas, Texas, she had lived
in Pacific Grove for 60 years. Mrs. Neff was a graduate of Pacific
Grove High School. She is survived by four sons, Darrell of Salinas,
Donnie of Seaside, Larry of Monterey and Garry of Pacific Grove; two
daughters, Ilene Cardinalli and Karen Abeyta, both of Pacific Grove; a
sister, Paula Van Deusen of Turlock; 11 grandchildren; and seven
great-grandchildren. Her husband, Jennings, died in 1983. Friends may
call from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the Paul Mortuary. Funeral
services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the mortuary. Private
burial will be in Mission Memorial park in Seaside. The family suggests
that any memorial contributions be sent to the Hospice of the Central
