the three youths arrived at Los Padres Dam about 2 o'clock and then
walked to a swimming place. Swim Across. Afterward, he said, they
decided to swim across the lake, a distance of about 150 yards, because
the other shore was more sunny. Dunipace started first, followed in
turn by Russell and Varner. When Varner was about half-way across, he
cried out, "I'm bushed.: Russell told him to float. Russell then
swam back to Varner and took hold of him. However, at this, Varner
began to struggle. Suddenly he sank. Russell dived for him, but
couldn't find him. Dunipace and Russell then went for help.
Sheriff's deputies were called at 4:20 p.m. by Forest Ranger Emil
Pozzi. Skindiver Called. Deputy Tom Gipson, an expert skindiver, made
three dives before locating the body. He found the body in a submerged
tree, about 60 feet below the surface and about 100 feet east of the
west shore of the lake. The body was recovered at 7:05 p.m. Gipson was
aided by Deputy Phillip Oswalt, Deputy Coroner Clyde (Bud) Glover, and
ranger Pozzi. Hill said at a late hour today he had not received the
results of an autopsy but that he presumed death was due to drowning.

1968 Frederick John Crocker (55)
Monterey County Herald, CA (print ed) 5/23/2006.
In Memory of Frederick John Crocker, March 15, 1950-May 23, 2005. Since
you've been gone, I've had more questions than answers. You were
the one I depended on. You were the one who knew which star it was in
the night sky, and countless answers to questions that come up every
day. I started counting the days, then weeks and months and now an
entire year has passed. To set the record straight, we were married 21
years, not counting the 5 years we took to actually get married. You
graduated from Fresno state and a Bulldog fan. You were preceded in
death by your father, Frederick Wilson Crock and your mother, Elizabeth
Crocker both of Pacific Grove. You were fondly known as big Bird to the
kids, you were Condor to your Rugby teammates and the Condor is making
a comeback in Big Sur! You were optimistic and never gave up on me or
the challenges we faced. You played soccer and rugby with determination
and skill and the rugby guys had a tournament in hour honor, The
Crocker Cup in October, 2005. You will also be remembered in Sand City
with a bench dedication and your crew from Hope Industries dedicated a
plaque in your honor. You are so loved and remembered by those who knew
you. I'd love to know your spin on the latest movies and the NFL
draft. I know Chuck and Jimmy Joe are thinking of you with the Sharks
getting into the playoffs. Oh, I forgot you played hockey too in Marina
with Mark, Steve, Dave and Tom. I still don't know what to do with
your old goalie gear. As we went through photos for your service I
realized the blue Hawaiian shirt was probably 35 years old (yes, I kept
it)! And the PF Flyers, the cowboy boots and nearly everything I
thought you should sort out and give away. Thank you, Jim, for taking
the many rugby photos and posters, and you Lindsay, for making a Rugby
wall in Jim's office. Thank you, Bruce, for taking the complete
history of Monterey Rugby Club. I've read and re-read each card I
received, the comfort they give with each reading is so meaningful. I
realized that I have been so remiss in not always remembering someone
who has lost a loved one and how valuable those notes can be. Whenever
Fred started a sentence with "Renee, we've got a problem here," I
knew it was not "We've got a problem" if it was plumbing or
something that couldn't be fixed with super glue the problem was mine
to solve or call in an expert; throughout this last year I've said to
myself many times over "Fred, we've got a problem here," but you
couldn't help me fix the pain losing you brought. I shared my grief
with so many people and I thank you all for listening and sharing with
me your experiences Lorene and Sally you'll be hearing from me soon.
I could not have made it through this year without the love and
friendship of RoseMary and Mike, Karen and Gary, Trish and Tom, Margie
and Steve, Margie M., Barbara and Larry, Kathy and Judy, Albertine
Potter and family who treated Fred and I as one of their own, Jimmy Joe
and Stephanie whose second son Maxwell Frederick Potter was born last
year, made it official. We were blessed with our granddaughters,
Madeline and Paige and our children, Natalie and Jeremy. Their love of
you and the effect you had on their lives is a great comfort. Alan and
Amelia whose thoughtful guidance helped our grief group at Westland
House find our way through this experience and not give up on life.
I'd like to thank Eric Jepson and his wife Molly, for the wonderful
job they did putting together a great slide show of Fred's life on
very short notice. They legacy of memories Freddy left us will not be
forgotten by our family, we were so lucky to have him for as long as we
did. Fred, you still make us laugh and smile. God Bless You, Frederick
John Crocker
