Unknown newspapaer July 2003
Keith Nicks "He will live in our hearts forever" Keith Nicks, 42,
of Corral de Tierra, died Monday, July 21, at UCSF Medical Center
embraced by the love of his family. Born in Oklahoma City, Keith moved
to Pacific Grove as a child, attended local schools, including Pacific
Grove High School where he captained the football team. He went on to
receive a BBA from New Mexico State University and an MBA from Cal Poly
in Sal Luis Obisop. Keith was Vice President-Investments in the Carmel
office of UBS Paine Webber. A classic love story, Keith married his
high school sweetheart, Lisa Aeschliman - football captain and
cheerleader - in 1981. Lisa and Keith share the same birthdate,
October 15, 1960. An intelligent and gifted athlete, Keith was a
celebrated player on championship football teams at Pacific Grove High,
Monterey Peninsula College, and New Mexico State. Fiercely competitive,
Keith played to win, and did. When confronted in March with a diagnosis
of primary brain tumors, Keith challenged the disease with profound
determination. Throughout, he remained positive, courageous, and
strong. Keith enriched the lives of all he met with his welcoming
smile, humility, keen mind, sense of humor, quiet strength, and his
sincere, genuine interest in everyone and everything. The essence of
Keith is apparent in the gratitude he expressed for the overwhelming
support of his family and friends when, despite the brain tumors, he
announced, "I'm the luckiest man in the world!" Continuing his
competitive passion for sports and fitness, Keith was the 2002 Chamisal
Club A Division Men's Singles Tennis Champion and the 2002 Lake
Pillsbury Resort Cribbage champion. As a volunteer coach of tennis and
girls' softball, Keith set an example of gentle, positive
encouragement. Keith's love and support knew no bounds and touched
every aspect of his wife's and daughter's lives. His "Just Do
it" motto to live life to the fullest led him to accomplish more in
his 42 years than most people do in a lifetime. Blessed by his love,
strength, and commitment to family are his wife and soulmate Lisa,
daughters Amanda and Kelsey of Corral de Tierra, beloved golden
retriever Ace, his mother Gwyneth McCoy of Carmel Valley, father Gene
Nicks of Santa Cruz, sister and brother-in-law Tamara and Rick
Rohrbough, niece and nephew Jessica and Cole, of Medford, Oregon, and a
flock of extended family on the Monterey Peninsula as well as in
Montana, Colorado, and Oklahoma. A celebration of Keith's life will
be held at The First Presbyterian Church, 501 Eldorado, in Monterey on
Saturday, July 26 at 2 o'clock. The family requests that memorial
contributions be made in the memory of Keith Nicks to the Brian Tumor
Research Center, UCSF Foundation, Post Office Box 0248, San Francisco,
California 94143-0248.

Manager's Corner by Buck Patton
How does one judge the eminence of another man's heart? The question
has been asked many times before. The truth is that you really can't.
But, you can get a pretty good idea by the way he walked through his
life. That is why I want to tell you about my thoughts of Keith Nicks:
the life I saw, and in some ways shared in. I want you to know why this
man had such a huge heart, and why it is both a privilege and an honor
to have the #1 court at Chamisal carry his name. Keith was a standout
high school and college football player. Not only was Keith a big guy,
but he was extremely athletic and agile. When he joined Chamisal in
1992, he was a beginning tennis player. He soon got involved with
organized league play. It seemed like each year Keith was getting
bumped up to higher league divisions and was making rapid improvement
in his game. It is extremely rare for a player to go from a beginner to
one of the best players in the club. He was our club singles champion
last year. But what really impressed me was his determination, and his
ability to focus with such a positive attitude. As an example, a couple
of years ago, he was playing Gary Pybas, the top 4.5 singles player
from our team, 2-3 times a week at lunch. Well, Gary had his number,
and had beaten Keith every time. In fact, Keith made a point of keeping
track of his losses as it grew to 49 wins in a row for Gary. On the 50
match, Keith finally won and came into the clubhouse bragging that
nobody beats Keith Nicks 50 times in a row. From a business standpoint,
Keith was a very successful financial planner. He had a strong client
following, and his clients knew that he really cared about their
future. He was a man of tremendous integrity. People in the business
community respected Keith as a consummate professional. As a family
man, Keith had a beautiful marriage to his high school sweetheart,
Lisa, and they have been blessed with 2 wonderful girls: Amanda and
Kelsey. Keith wasn't so driven with work and his hobbies that he didn't
have time for his family. It was really quite the opposite. Keith and
Lisa had a vibrant marriage, full of love, laughter, and
accomplishment. They were always together. You would see him helping
his girls with their own tennis skills and other activities. They
always found time to travel. Somehow he was able to successfully
balance family, work, and sports, with time remaining to spend with his
friends. What was even more impressive was how Keith handled his battle
with cancer. He didn't complain. He didn't give up. He kept on
fighting, just like he did with his life. Keith was never afraid to
declare that he was the luckiest man in the world. He passed away far
too young. But he was the kind of man that most of us can only aspire
to become. Keith is gone, but will never be forgotten.
