KAISER PERMANENTE®
• Multivitamin
o Choose "with minerals"; must have zinc, folic acid, selenium and
copper
o One "serving size" per day. See label
o Suggested brands: Natures Blendi Theratrum Complete, Centrum, Costco
Kirkland, Walmart Equate, One A Day
, Maximum, (Chewable must add'iron: Bariatric Advantage or Trader
Joe's High Potency)
o If there is no, or less than 18 mg iron in the multiple vitamin w
minerals, add 18 mg iron daily
Avoid Age or Sex specific brands; for example, prenatals, mens,
womens, or childrens, because they lack minerals
• Calcium with Vitamin D
o Choose calcium citrate or lactate-gluconate preferably over
carbonate
o Suggested Brands: Citracal, Natures'Blend, Walmart Equate, Bariatric
Advantage crystals or chews, Liquid: Wellesse
o 1500 to 1700 mg pet'day (you can only absorb 500-600 mg at a time)
o Take in divided doses. Thiamine
•Vitamin D Usually adequate amounts in multivitamin and calcium
o2000IU total every day
• B1 (Thiamine)
o Important If you have frequent vomiting
o '50 mg 3 times a week
B-12 (Cyanocobalamin)
o 1'000 micrograms sublingual
o Take under the tongue or between cheek and gum 3 times a week OR
Injection 1 time every month
• Beta Carotene -25,000 IU twice weekly
• All vitamins should be taken with food at meal times except iron.
• Do not take all your calcium at once
• If iron is prescribed. Add Vitamin C if not included. Take 2 hours
apart from tea, meals, multivitamin, and calcium as these decrease
absorption. Avoid Ferrous "Sulfate" or slow release.
• Start all vitamins (preferably liquid or chewable for first few
months) 1-2 days after surgery
