Theother day I purchased a Hunter Hercules tool. This has a little round cupped carbide tip set at a forward angle on a very robust, heavy steel shaft with a substantial handle. The tips are silvery-bright polished carbide and when new will catch on your thumbnail as sharp tools should.
It has three modes of operation. Used with the tool shaft horizontal and flat on the rest, perpendicular to the surface and cutting on the very tip, it gives a semi scraping cut that is quite aggressive. If the handle is twisted and the side of the tip used, it shear scrapes and can give a good finish. It can be used for a bevel rubbing slicing cut that also gives a good finish.
I tried the tool on some edge-grain mdf. In semi scraping mode, it cut freely for a while before the edge lost its initial keenness. But it kept going. The small tip penetrates easily and whether semi scraping or slicing it keeps on taking off the waste. Even on the mdf face-grain, which with normal scrapers produces shavings, the waste was very dusty indeed. The finish produced was not brilliant, but adequate after a little sanding, and I shall normally make the final cuts with HSS tools anyway. I made several complete components with the tip still going strong.
I'm writing a TCP/IP client and I would need a "test server" to be able to test easily. It should listen on a configurable port, show me when a client connects, and what the client sent. It should allow me to manually enter text to send back to the client.
Normally, I would have used the simple but powerful nc.exe (alias "Netcat" available on Unix and on Windows) but the antivirus software detects it as a "hacker tool", so my system administrator doesn't want me to use it at work.
netcat (nc.exe) is the right tool. I have a feeling that any tool that does what you want it to do will have exactly the same problem with your antivirus software. Just flag this program as "OK" in your antivirus software (how you do this will depend on what type of antivirus software you use).
I would go with netcat too , but since you can't use it , here is an alternative : netcat :). You can find netcat implemented in three languages ( python/ruby/perl ) . All you need to do is install the interpreters for the language you choose . Surely , that won't be viewed as a hacking tool .
In situations like this, why not write your own? A simple server app to test connections can be done in a matter of minutes if you know what you're doing, and you can make it respond exactly how you need to, and for specific scenarios.
Another tool is tcpmon. This is a java open-source tool to monitor a TCP connection. It's not directly a test server. It is placed in-between a client and a server but allow to see what is going through the "tube" and also to change what is going through.

All my experiences with Ken Rude have been truly excellent. Ken is always helpful and this goes way beyond when you buy from him. He is always ready to answer questions, offer advice, and share his knowledge. I cannot recommend Ken Rude and Branches to Bowls highly enough. I just wish other companies gave the same level of service and support. Thank you, Ken.
I just wanted to drop a note to say thanks for the help getting what I needed to finish the bottoms of my medium bowls. The quality of the Vicmarc chucks and jaws are fantastic. They run very true and that has not been my experience with other jaw sets.
Also thank you for the ruler. It will come in handy. Thank you!
After an extreme length of time and research into exactly what tools I would upgrade to and make an investment in I decided to go with Carter and Sons (C&S) M42 tools and I wanted to deal with a Canadian distributor. The people at C&S directed me to Branches to Bowls. I placed a request for a quote and was shocked that 30 minutes later Ken called me to discuss my order. Not only did he review my order with me, but offered a wealth of information about turning. I appreciated the exchange so much I had to send him some of the blanks of a type of wood he had never turned before. He promptly sent me a quote and we were able to finalize it the next day.
I have been extremely impressed with Ken and Valerie of Branches to Bowls. Their commitment to customer service is outstanding and industry leading (by far!). My experience with Branches to Bowls started when I was looking for a Northamerican Vicmarc distributor who would sell me a VL240 HD lathe. I sent an inquiry to Branches to Bowls and Ken called me almost immediately saying he could provide me with the lathe I wanted. Since the lathe was being shipped from Australia, Ken kept me informed along the way and ensured that the lathe was delivered per my specific instructions (literally right into my shop!). Ken also quickly responded with concern to an initial start up issue I experienced (I did not have the correct type of 220/240V breaker). I truly feel Ken and Valerie want me to be happy with my new lathe... and I am just delighted!
Recently I needed to acquire an accessory for my Vicmarc VL300 lathe. After contacting all of the Vicmarc dealers in the U.S. together with all of the woodturning specialty houses with whom I was familiar, I had no success, the typical response being that the accessory I needed might be available in three to six months.
Wow!. I am extremely impressed with the VM 100 chuck. I have not found any other that runs as smoothly. It runs true and precise. Dovetail jaws are the best out there and direct thread is an added bonus.
Although the cartridge may seem to be a bit expensive up front the replacement blades are inexpensive and overall it's well worth the cost in time saved and ease of using the coring system. Thanks Branches to Bowls!!
During the last year I acquired an older model Vicmarc VL300. The lathe was purchased locally in northern Canada where if you want accessories you will have to purchase from a distance either on line or by phone order. A search on line came up with Branches to Bowls Ltd. in Calgary, Alberta.
I have ordered numerous items from Branches to Bowls and have been very impressed with the quality of service provided by Ken. Vicmarc products have earned a great deal of respect around the globe and here in Canada, Branches to Bowls Ltd will no doubt earn the respect of the woodturning community.

It features 4 x 75mm deep drawers to fit a wide range of tools, a 90-110mm deep storage compartment under the lid for bulkier items and a heavy-duty hasp-n-staple closure with central locking pin ensuring drawers stay securely closed whilst only needing a single padlock.

Ave also mentioned that it is common for companies like HF to start with a good tool and slowly value engineer it to a lower quality tool. The early reviews and all the videos will be regarding the initial, higher quality, version.
There is a difference between liking thin crust and not Chicago style and liking thin crust and not knowing Chicago style of pizza is supremely popular and delicious. I, myself prefer thin, then hand tossed.
They have their Hercules and Bauer line of 20v tools. Both have a fairly large selection of tools that use the same battery. Either a blue Hercules or the Red Bauer. We get alot of truck drivers come thru my work that all swear by their Hercules 20v impacts.
With Hercules, I know they were very careful in motor and component selection (such as the drill chucks), which led me to reverse course on dismissing them outright simply for being a Harbor Freight tool.
The usual comparisons for this Makita drill are Dewalt, Milwaukee, Ridgid, Bosch, and Metabo HPT $99 holiday special drill kits. The usual comparisons for the Harbor Freight Hercules are other Harbor Freight product lines or perhaps DIYer level brands such as Ryobi and Craftsman.
I also have a Craftsman brushless drill kit that could very likely match or even best this Makita. The new Ryobi 18V ONE+ HP brushless drill comes close enough under the Makita with respect to specs that there could be an interesting comparison there.
I recommend you take a look at your approach to cordless tool commentary. This was also on display in your recent tool recommendations post. If the only tool you will ever own is cordless drill then even a tongue in cheek article like this is great in that the audience is a diy hanging a curtain rod ( and of course the actual choice is not relevant).
But imo cordless tools are about battery systems and related reliability, breadth of line ( not vision) and the distance from the best of breed any given tool in such category is. I dont see many reviewers focusing on these factors because of the sponsorship problem. While today i use Mikwaukee exclusively for cordless, if the distance from the pin grew, i would have no problem migrating to another system with sound battery tech ie i have no brand loyalty, i simply want tools that make life easier.
