I've got myself a Intel ARC A380 (Asrock) for the sole purpose of encoding AV1 in handbrake (GUI), using latest Ubuntu LTS. One +month later after endless guides, compiling (who I had to learn), clueless studying about how it's suppose to work. I am no closer to make it work then when I started.

I might have something to do with FFMPEG since I got it to work with Manjaro after installing FFMPEG Full..something in AUR. But I had so many other problems with Manjaro so I don't want to use it. But what do I know, It seems that there are multiple ways to use hardware encoding with Intel ARC.

Is there anyone out there who got it to work with Ubuntu LTS or know what I need to get it to work, any cohesive step-by-step guide... anything?
At this point I feel like I wanna bury the card deep underground and never touch anything labeled Intel again.

In case the issue persists, it could be a compatibility problem between the drive and the app, so if the problem continues to happen, share with us more details about what exactly happens when trying to use AV1 encoding with Handbrake like error messages or crashes, since we might be able to take a further look at the problem.

Recently the handbrake started fluttering and it was self applying at various % whilst racing. I gave the plug a wiggle and it went straight to 100% on. Removing and re inserting the plug either gives the same result or zero indication. There is no response from the handbrake operation at all. Hence I am unable to set any values/calibrate it. The plug had received a little knock months ago but has been fine. All drivers and firmware are current. I've just updated to 452 today but the issue began on 451. Any help on what to do would be massively appreciated.

I had a similar issue after knocking the plug on mine - very easily done due to the placement. Likely that the contacts in the socket are bent and making poor contact with the plug - the fluctuations when moving the plug in the socket support this assumption.

Hi Gagaryn. Thanks for the assist. I've ordered a couple. I've also raised it with fanatec but I'm not expecting a reply any time soon. Last time it was nearly a week, but to be fair he was extremely helpful. Then someone else took the case over and it all went a bit downhill. Any how, that was then etc. Back to this weeks nightmare. The plug did get a little budge and now seems to have a slight flex to it. I'm guessing from past experience this may well be buggered too. Quick question if I may.? The pin out on the plug is indeed black/green - tip, red- ring, white- ground, but do I read the back of the socket the same for wiring? I.e. long leg at the bottom would be the white ground then reading left to right, tip then ring?

After replacing the plug and socket to no avail, a full strip down revealed that the plastic locating pin on the potentiometer bushing had snapped and the sensor was no longer in range. Quite why this would give either a zero % or 100% randomly whilst plugging it in, without moving the lever by the way, is a mystery. You'd think it would be one or other? Anyhow, the pin has been replaced with a metal one and all is well again.

Possibly. Sounds reasonable now. I think the lesson here is just pull it all to bits and inspect the lot. Especially known issues. Ah, hind sight eh? Would have saved me a lot of time and some cash. Cue dodgy ebay handbrake cable for return. Looked OK but as some have said, didn't pull to 100% and suffered fluttering signal issues. Bad use of 18 there then. My repair however is 100% hunky dory. Ah, driver, mechanic, engineer, computer technician and bank manager. Who knew sim racing could be so involved.!?

I also then snapped the cheap plastic washer that stops the spring from slipping over the knuckle end, it also helps locate the internal tension spring onto the handles knuckle, if you pull hard too much it will break quickly.

Change the plug on the male end to be a 90 right angle type or completely change the plug and socket to a more robust, low profile type with a locking system (RJ-12 or something else), or make and fit a plug guard to protect the plug from being bent sideways.

I've had a chance to work with the HandBrake docker and have found a few instances where the docker dies when working with the que and initiating conversions. I haven't been able to capture any meaningful data to help troubleshoot issues though. I would suggest caution using the 'edge testing' version as it may not be stable. Would it be better to use a stable branch repository like this one 'ppa:stebbins/handbrake-releases'.

For example, this one lets me add files to the watch folder while the docker is stopped, and when started will happily chew through the backlog. Neither of the previous dockers let me do this. (I am using CA User Scripts to schedule all handbrake processing overnight)

-- "The Watchers S1E05.mp4" and I noticed it ripped the file, but then it erased the file from /Output and attempted to Re-rip the file so I stopped it. I can only guess its because the file had a space. I didn't catch anything error wise in my HandBrake Log

6. I drug a file to the /Watcher folder and while it was copying I noticed several error messages saying it couldn't read the file as it was copying over in the log. I wanted to say. "Duh, can you wait a few minutes and let it finish first? lol I know Coppit's Handbrake Docker had a "Waiting for Watch Folder Stabilization message, will re-attempt in 10 seconds" Not a big deal most of use might ignore this error message since once things are running smoothly in our day to day operations.

For the other issue, files with spaces should not be a problem. In the logs, you should have one from the watchfolder that tells if the conversion succeeded or not. In both cases, the same source file should not be re-processed, unless the source really changed... I guess the /output and /watch folders are mapped to different folders on the host?

When I compress it with handBrake, it rotates it to the wrong orientation automatically. Why is it doing that? I have a lot of videos, Its so annoying that I have to rotate them back after compressing them. Can I just compress them one with handbrake not have to deal with rotating them back?

One thing that kind of "fixes" this is that in quickTime, there is an option to edit the video and it can rotate it but it takes 21 minutes to rotate the newly compressed video! Jesus! The video is not even 1 GB in its compressed form... isn't there a different way of doing this? This actually doesn't work because when I re-saved my video, it increased size dramatically. Its original size was under 1GB and rotating it in quicktime and then saving it increased the size to 5GB. This is ridiculous.

Why:Some programs like quick time, automatic rotate the video when they display, but the original file is still not ok. Please try to see your videos using vlc or other apps. handBrake only rotate your videos if you set that option.

That might be caused by iOS video recording issue. Videos are always recorded in landscape, but the orientation of the phone during recording is saved in the movie, so iPhone and probably Apple software rotates the videos during playback, while they are rotated when playing them using any other software. Video converters usually has option to rotate movie and save them so they will played correctly using any player.

HandBrake (or at least the GUI) does not offer a way to rotate video. The HandBrake CLI does have a "rotate" option, however I found it is not a true rotation. Rather, it simply flips on an axis. The documentation is poor, but I found that a value of 1 flips on X, 2 flips on Y, and 3 flips on X and Y. So using a value of 3 is the same as doing a 180 rotation, which is useful for videos that are upside down, but not for videos that are sideways.

I recently purchased an old sci fi series I loved ("The Universe"), been wanting to watch it. First, I bought it on dvd. The quality was horrible, they cropped it on all sides, using maybe the middle 75%? of the screen. Appalling. Should've sent it back for a refund. Then luckily the series was also available on blu ray, so I purchased that. YAY! 1080p. So I ripped it with makemkv, and realized that with each episode being at least 8gb in size, and over 100 episodes, I would be dedicating a full terabyte for one tv show. DOH! That's just too much. Time to up my game.
